Great reaction, it was clear you were really feeling that. This is probably their darkest song lyrically. Rondo is a musical term for a repeated theme - they borrowed that idea for the song so Su is caught is a recurring nightmare, being chased through the dark by something she can't see and doesn't know what it is.
Eventually she hides in a fountain and in that soft part where she looks like she is floating in mid air whatever is chasing her is still coming closer. She finally accepts there is no escape and asks that is she is to die won't whatever has been chasing her at least show itself to her first.
The 'Mischiefs of the Metal Gods' intro from the Kami Band was almost like a ritual summoning Su (she was only 16 when they did this) up from below ... and once she appears she completely rules that stage and that whole arena.

Little known fact:
They had to rebuild Budokan overnight, because Su burned it down when she premiered this song the previous night.

And… that's why we made her our Queen at sixteen years old.
Her voice has only gotten better since that March 2014 concert.
This song, and 'Akatsuki' from the same concert are what made me a die-hard fan.
Su performed three solos that night.
She did 'No Rain, No Rainbow', followed by 'Akatsuki' earlier in the set.
That Black Night Budokan concert is still one of my favorite BABYMETAL shows of all time.
This performance is my standard answer to anyone who says that BABYMETAL aren't really metal.
Was pretty sure you would like that one. It's was already epic, and THEN Su rises up from beneath the stage.

Great reaction! This was *the* performance for me. Some folks, understandably, prefer the 2015 Yokohama performance. But here, with the image of Su-metal as a music box dancer up on the platform waltzing to that heavy metal chorus while the band plays below on the slowly rotating stage.. And too, when she comes in with that "scream" exactly on time and pitch.. My (many decades ago) 16 year old self fell completely gobsmacked in love with Su-metal.

What's great is that their softer stuff makes the heavier stuff that much more heavy. Rondo is by far their darkest song lyrically. Basically Su is trapped in a recurring nightmare, being chased by a beast she cannot see. At the part where it gets quiet, and she's singing in that old radio type of tone, she's accepting that she's going to die but only want to see the face of the beast before the end. Spooky stuff.
Hopefully revisiting Babymetal has, in a small way at least, eased some of the stress you've been dealing with.

This is Rondo Of Nightmare week, cool! My favorite SuMetal solo, rock on! \m/
_Akumu No Rinbukyoku_ (or Akumu No Rondo for many japanese, even that's what SuMetal sings) is one of the most darkest song from Babymetal and like i said is my favorite SuMetal solo, followed slightly close by _Akatsuki_ and _No Rain No Rainbow_
Temporarily title song was "Kill The Alice", so is like an Alice but instead of Wonderland she is in a nightmare trying to escape and avoid some evil entity.
Rondo is a musical form in wich you can hear a repetitive pattern, you can hear an example of this in the song of "David Burke - Blue Rondo a la Turk", you can notice that pattern here too, some other element you can spot is the piano like a "dark waltz" songs.
The Kami Band in this live concert at Budokan Black Night Apocalypse 2014 are just phenomenal, Mikio Fujioka was still around the band those years but sometimes they changed some band members due to other commitments, in this case the two guitarrist were Leda Cygnus and Takayoshi Ohmura, Boh on bass killing it, and Hideki Aoyama (son of another famous drum musician) on drums. You're going to notice Mikio with his bright, sometimes creepy, smiles :D
Kami Band intros are rare, sometimes are not in the same song which makes it unique, and only during certain songs like: _Catch Me If You Can, Rondo Of Nightmare, Awadama Fever, YAVA!, Kagerou (West Kami Band intro)_
This was arranged by Yuyoyuppe (also know as DJ Tekina, he's behind _Megitsune, Kagerou_ and involved in many other songs and remix like BM Death and Uki Uki Midnight).
I'm always amazed of our queen doing this unique performance with that dangerous platform rising up while she's doing some dance moves here and there and the Kami Band rotating beneath her feet.
You already know our angel of dance and angel of love are resting while Su-chan is doing her thing, and she delivered for sure.
I can see you've been caught up by the heaviness and darkness of this song.

This particular performance is one of the ones that cemented my love and appreciation for Babymetal and is one I will go to when introducing someone to Babymetal. The intro is just awesome and Su's performance as well as the staging and camera work are just spectacular to really make the atmosphere match the lyrics.

Nice & thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。Kamis' (=Gods') super plays were excellent enough as a main event in the show, but once the 16-year-old Queen (as of 2014) emerged from the underground, she colored everything differently and turned Kami Band's plays into a ritual to summon her. How many times we should go through waves? Billows, ripples and hurricane.
This song has not been performed since 2017. I really want them to revive this song like they did this year for NRNR, Akatsuki, OD, FDTD and GJ! at the Budokan, the same venue in this video.

Your expression when she continues with her belting vocals after that breakdown says it all. It's amazing how she's able to convey the emotions even if you don't understand Japanese (like me).
The instrumental intro song is called "Mischief of the Metal Gods" and it's played to summon the Queen SU-METAL who finally emerges from Hell.
"Rondo of Nightmare" is probably their darkest song lyrically. It's about Su being trapped into an endless nightmare, without any chance to escape, where she's chased by a dark entity as she tries to run away and hide from. Finally she gives up and ask the entity to show its real nature.
This was just the second time they perform it live (the first one was the previous day at the same venue) and Su, being just 16 at the time, was standing by herself on a tiny high platform, without any safety and probably not being able so see a thing due the spotlight. It's because of performances like this she's called the Queen.

This is one of Su's solos and we'll just ignore the health and safety violation of being on a platform without a railing or harness...seriously the staging at Budokan is one of the few times I feel the need to criticize the BM organization. BM does have the gimmick of being metal fronted by cute girls or women dancing, but after the initial strangeness of that wears off you realize that they are incredibly talented from top to bottom and make great music and put on fantastic shows. They could do with improving the H&S department though.
RON is a very dark song where Su is chased by something she cannot escape. The repetitive nature of a rondo makes this even more frightening. I think that the changing time signatures are there to make us feel uncomfortable and keep us off balance.
The final chorus is as unsettling as the time signatures and offers no happy resolution:
It flickers slowly
appearing and disappearing in my mind.
A nightmare rondo is being repeated.
The awakening light
is gone far away out of my sight.
I can do nothing but fall
into the darkness.
I'm always reminded of "monsters from the id". Some other reviewers also mention that the song ends very abruptly and that it's hard to settle into...which I think is the point as you wake from a nightmare suddenly.
For someone that is into symphonic metal, to hear all the waltz and classical music elements in Rondo is what makes me love this song.... The piano in the background....Just perfect in everyway.

And just when you think that it can't get any better, our Queen is then summoned from the depths of the legendary Budokan only to be elevated to a position befitting of a Queen. This chorus! It‘s absolutely perfect to me. So much better than the typical simple four chord progression repeated two or four times. It‘s one continuous, pretty complex flow from start to finish, and it‘s both dark and beautiful at the same time. And Su‘s voice complements it perfectly. Impresses me every time.
BABYMETAL is on another level, fact...and yeah, SU is the queen!

That's exactly what I was thinking, I've never seen someone show so perfectly how I feel when I listen to it now, which is especially amazing for a first listen by Cyneward! On _my_ first listen (from the album release) I knew this song would require a lot more attention from me, but it took me a while to understand and feel it from start to finish. This Budokan performance added a lot of weight to it, too. But it seems Cyneward felt it fully, immediately, and it showed.

@@aperson806 I believe it was last performed at the Black Fox Festival in 2017, four years ago now. Su-metal solos were balanced with Black Babymetal songs, so its slot in setlists was likely affected by how that changed post-Yuimetal. But even so all groups have to juggle old vs. new as they expand their catalog.

When it comes to Babymetal staging, this was in 2014 and they have a habit of one-upping themselves every year or even between performances. The following year they come back with bridges to stages out into the audience, collapsing tents, giant fox heads breathing smoke, and a pyramid the girls get in that flies around the stadium. The year following that, the Tokyo Dome Stage is something like 5 stories tall with elevators and multiple levels, including two levels of spinning stages, plus 3 coffin shaped runways jetting out through the crowd, each with their own moving platform running the length of the runway. You think, NOW, they can no longer top that one, then at 2017 Legend S they come up with a stage on runners that transitions from one side of the arena to the other (pulled buy Fox God minions), raises about 30 feet in the air, with giant fox heads on the corners breathing smoke and shooting lazer beams from their eyes(really awesome when it's towering above everyone), with one side of the arena (where the Kami's are setup) being multilevel with a staircase ascending from the center. So NOW they've topped it all, they can't possibly do more than this. They next come up with a giant video screen that runs the width and height of the arena, a section of the stage that moves out to the center of the arena, rises 20-30 feet in the air, with that platform itself being a video screen (sides and floor), with a runway of flames, smoke, and sparks. Every year the stage "theme" changes. Every year you are amazed by it.
There's this vibe of a dark gothic horror to this music, from the piano, the heavy haunting riffs, Su's voice and her waltz dance, the emotion, the lighting.. can't describe the feeling... this is BM at its absolute best

Since becoming a fan a little over a year ago I’ve probably listened to BABYMETAL every day since is some format - reactions, stereo, car, dvd and so on. They do have a gimmick, for sure, but if that’s all they have they would have folded up long ago. Pro wrestling fan here, so the term doesn’t have negative connotations to me even though I know it’s often intended as one. Anyway, enjoyed your reaction

I going to make few posts here on info. From reading comments the fans said that when she sings that slow part where it sounds all reverby that she is actually singing through her nose or using her nose to cause that reverb. So there is no actual reverb but her doing it. You can see also in the video she puts her nose up to microphone for that part. I have only seen it with this song and is very cool to see. Also, here is the subtitled version to this song. This will only show the siging part. The translation was done by Japanese Native who also ahs other songs translated by using his culture background. He stopped doing any new ones since he can't use his culture too much in his response but would say the ones he done are awesome. The fearlessness of Su-metal. Think about that she is on a platform 2 meters wide 2 meters up without any safety equipment. Lights on her face, there is no chance that she can see where she is standing, okay if you stand still but she takes some dance moves and then there are the thing with your mind playing with you when you know you are on an elevated platform. Late comment but heads up. The songs with their cutest sounds have heaviest riffs. Which explains their genre Kawaii Metal.
Su is different than your typical Japanese cutesy singer. She's a very experienced, dominant and a versatile singer since the age of 6. The idea of Babymetal itself was formed because of her. One of the few collections of metal vocalist who actually sounds good live. And truly deserve to be called the youngest Queen Of Metal.
This is the performance that turned me into a hardcore Babymetal fan.

Hey man, thank you for the post of your reaction. I get the impression you are completely honest in your descriptions of what you are seeing/hearing and I appreciate that immensely. I have some similar sentiments regarding BM and at first I too thought, what is this crap some marketing gimmick, only to come to a completely polar opposite conclusion regarding their music. Maybe I should say their complete production of their music and way they deliver it to listeners. Obviously they have an awesome group of support production people involved in delivering their product and it certainly is more appealing with a visual component to it which is why I think they have been so well received in the industry. I sure hope whatever medical issues you are dealing with are soon to be overcome snd wish you the best in that process. Know that I will be pulling for ya from Sacramento. And here’s hoping the ladies are busy back home in Japan writing and working on some new material to blow us all away with once they are able to get out and tour again. ABBA ended their last tour there. Their final show on March 27, 1980, was the last live concert ABBA performed together. me saw it differently about " gimmick " specially when watch metal music video , just like :
- what gimmick the band want to show
- how " special " the gimmick is
- can they blend it with the song
- how consistent they using it
- can they improve it
that's just few reasons why the gimmick is one of the important point for me and if me can't imagining something powerful from the song then that mean the song is not for me.

Don't forget that this song is incredibly hard to sing. Not only is the melodic movement all over the place, emphasizing her vocal range, but most of the song is in different odd time signatures (apart from a short passage in the middle that's in 4/4) like 9/8, 6/8, and 7/8. That's not typically a song you would expect a sixteen-year-old to master, but this being Su-metal, she pulls this off while also balancing and dancing on a rotating platform three meters off the ground, without any safety measures.
