Thanks for this video. I have an Esee 6 & the only thing I don't like about it is the spine. Think I'll be putting it on my father-in-law's grinder next time I'm over there. I think I'll blue mine after though.
That's the best video on making a 90 degree edge on your knife I've seen so far. The video was right to the point and quick. BTW, in another video you say you live in the Bush. Without compromising your location, where abouts do you live? Thanks!
equatorbushcraft No wonder you can get Elephant Dung! This may be a dumb question but are you allowed to carry firearms where you live? I live in California and we have strict rules regarding open carry and where you can shoot.
get brother i used a work sharp knife sharpener in my tops silent hero to put a 90°spine on it. it throws sparks on my ferro rod but not great. I noticed that there is really small burs on the knife. do i grind this down to get better sparks from the ferro rod or do i need to grind more. I'm not worried about the loss of the knife I'm just worried about the function and integrity of knife. Thanx!
If it has coating of any kind on it has to come off. Take the spine of the knife and slide it on your finger nail, if it take small shaving off your nail it will throw sparks. Crazy but that is how i gauge it. I would take the burrs off and you have to make sure that there is no coating on the side of the spine as well.
Thanks chief I ended up using a Dremal Copper wire wheel to get some of the coating of the side of the spine and wouldn't you know. It throws sparks great. Thanks for the video buddy and for replying. I also touched up the spine with a file I had. I'm more than pleased with the out come. If I blue the part that I filed down, will it stop it from throwing sparks. I just want to help keep the part I filed down from rusting. Thanx once again and your video was very informative. God bless!!
Sir. Thank you for the info. Once you've ground off the coating; is the steel capable of throwing sparks from flint or churt? Ive been considering getting the esse. Is the cutting edge a flat grind or one of these fancy convex scandi grinds? Ive never been good at sharpening. Need something simple. ;-)
+Christopher O'Dalaigh Hello. Yes the steel is capable of throwing sparks by using everything you mentioned and the right stone as well. It is a flat grind.
Rough Rooster Knife Sharpening No doubt I cringed watching this, a flat file takes 1minute and if done right you won't need to sharpen it for a long time. I dont like Esee knives all that mush anyways, so it didn't bother me that much LOL😅

I do that to all my Knives also...
Don't most of the fire starters, the ferrocerioum rods. Come with a striker?
The goal in surviving is redundancy. If striker is missing, the knife is there for you.
Salamat po!
