Awesome & thanks Ralph .... they take a lot of work to put together, but I enjoy my Fishing on the Manukau mate ... Hope your having some great fishing out their too & a very Merry Xmas to you 👍
I agree mate, as I believe they are a very underrated fish hear in NZ & I love them in raw fish recipes & also as smoked fish .... Nothing nicer than a smoked Kahawai straight out of the smoke house, hot 🔥on some fresh bread & butter 🤪👌
Thanks heaps, great ideas, already got some beads. You mentioned John Moran, I worked with a John Moran in the 70s at Henderson. Some of my service contacts have him as a friend too. Would that be one and the same? Cheers Pat D
Hi Pat & thanks for your enquiry of John Moran ... I was a great friend of Johns & also his lovely wife Cheryl for around 8 years. John was the Gurnard Guru of the Manukau Harbour & also wrote fishing articles for New Zealand Fishing World magazine and also was on 1ZB radio on Saturday mornings talking about fishing, which was a very popular program. I can remember him telling me a few of his jobs he had over the years .... I recall, a Police officer ... dog handler for many years & I think after that a school caretaker & something to do with house removal transporting & house foundation piles. Unfortunately, John passed away in 2018 & lived at Thames at the time ... prior to that, the lived in Waiuku for many years .... Also, Henderson rings a bell to me!!
@fishhunttotheendoftheearth4515 I've been living in OZ for 39 years, but return to NZ when I can for the fishing, brother Mike says Manukau has vastly improved. John M was at Henderson Police. Remarkable organiser, 1 great event was a raffle of a Mini to raise funds for a Police Club bar. Big glossy tickets had a red Mini, they sold like the proverbial hot cakes.
@@fredoz04 Hi Pat ... Thats amazing that John was the same Moran you worked with. He was such a nice guy & miss him a lot as he had such a wide knowledge of fishing & the Manukau Harbour .... He started up the Gurnard Grunter fishing comp that was run out of the Manuwera RSA many years ago & over the years, turned into a massive competition with I believe up to 6 to 800 anglers some years. Yes, the Manukau Harbour is looking good these days, with no more pollution & rubbish been dumped into it like from the fourties ... through to the seventies .... so, it has had I guess over 30 years to recover & is in fact cleaner than a lot of the East Auckland beaches which still has a problem when raining of the sewer getting into their storm water systems. Lovely to chat with you Pat & hope you are still fishing .... Take care ... Gerald !!
I noticed when you were taking the heads off ,you were cutting towards your free hand. I know you've probably done it a million times, but as a butcher, brother I was cringing. Not being a smart arse. Just know from experience, knives and hands don't meet very nicely. Great video thou mate.
He'y Glen .... Yep your 100% right mate & it's true, iv'e been doing it for years & getting away with it. Hard to get out of old habits i guess & i should get a mesh glove before my luck runs out. Most of the time I would leave the heads on & have the free hand holding the head while taking the fillet off however this day the heads came off first for the Hen pot boil up. I am certainly going to take your advice in the future & hope you are Enjoying your fishing out their !
