When the developer themselves is down in the comments wishing Yahtzee had been harsher, I think we all recognize that the man's brand is now totally bulletproof.
It has been for years, as developers would often thank him for critiques and insist that they were well aware of the respective game's situation. It's just that often enough the publishers wouldn't listen, big surprise there.
I’ve noticed that for Yahtz, simply being something he hasn’t seen before or at least a million times already will go a long way to improving his opinion of a game. He admits that this game is mechanically nothing new and downright janky at times but the style and humor won him over. That might just be a thing for critics in general because they go through a LOT of content for their job.
"Might" nothin', that's one of the problems inherent in being a critic. It doesn't just apply to games, either; any kind of art critic is going to have a very, VERY different perspective from a casual consumer. Its one of the reasons why its probably not the greatest idea to rely on critic reviews exclusively to inform your purchase; you gotta mix in user reviews, as well. Take movies: the average dude isn't going to be paying attention to things like cinematography (unless its REALLY bad) when watching a movie. Your usual guy is going to be paying attention to the characters, the action, and the story. A professional critic, though, is going to have seen those same types of characters and stories many, many, MANY times over in a very short span of time. Thus, they're gonna be looking at camera work, sound design, and colour palette. Its one of the reasons you can watch a movie that's critically acclaimed...and walk away thinking they must be idiots because what you saw was a boring pile of pretentious nonsense that stopped just shy of puttin' ya to sleep.
It may also be something I've been complaining about to my friends for the last 5 years. EVERY game is the same now. Watchdogs legion is mechanically identical to spiderman is the same as Zelda is the same as horizon zero dawn is the same as assassins creed is the same as... all games are becoming this Grey mush of being exactly the same kind of sandbox with a mild crafting system, mild stealth and or climbing abilities with RPG elements and a weapon wheel and a billion identical sidequests filling up your menus. It's just, really fucking depressing. I stopped playing major games for tha reason. But similar things are happening to indie games too. So I' not sure where I'm going to go in 5 years
Just to be clear, I’m not complaining. I use reviews to gauge how I might like game, from reviewers I agree and don’t agree with. I just try to keep this in mind.
As the developer I'm glad the review is so positive, but as a ZP fan I was hoping to get ripped & torn a new one.. oh well, I guess I'll take it. All kidding aside, this was amazing! thank you so much!
I dunno, he ripped into the game a few times, but true to character the game always sewed up the holes in its design and turned into a patchwork design of character and pizzazz. The bottom might have fallen off the game's trousers at the end, like Yahtzee said, but damn if the game didn't make it work anyway.
"trenchcoat, hawaiian shirt, fedora, and white sneakers" isn't a phase, it's a way of life. A way of life that can land you in prison if the lack of clothing between your waist and shoes was deliberate.
“Yahtzee, you are a warm hunk of red hot animal charisma and I need you slamming up against my love crevices pronto." Oh Yahtzee, what would we do without you.
Yahtzee is literally the only TH-cam personality who just keeps getting better. Usually they run out of juice after a couple of years but the stuff he's putting out now is just better.
Honestly though, yeah. Not that you should do that exact thing for every person you date, but "figure out a consistent way to cheer up your S.O. when they're having a bad time" is a pretty solid piece of advice
Yeah he's really losing his curmudgeonly charm in his old age, ironically enough. Most people do it the other way around. But the transition from bachelor to spouse is always a bit of a roller coaster, we're just seeing the aftereffects.
Just in case you read this, Yahtzee... never change. This video wouldn't look out of place with your content from a decade ago, and I mean that as a sincere compliment. Things a decade ago were less cursed than they are now, so your content is like a big, sticky spoonful of childhood comfort food. So, yeah... cheers. Put my membership money towards another bottle of Magner's cider, by all means. Also, was that a pride flag joke that didn't divide the room? Well played, sir.

It can take a bit of getting used to but when you get it you get it, I only really missed about 2 poles through out the course of my whole play through and even then they weren't deadly mistakes, they just slowed me down a bit.

Plus, when will there be another game that allows you to takedown Karens!? (And I know Postal Brain Damaged has that, but what else?)
the part for me that makes me bounce off the trailers is the sprites not fully committing to the spriteness, such as the belt whip animation visibly rotating for the windup and followthrough and seeing all those right-angle corners on its "pixels" actively turning around as they go. Hated that in Pokemon's third generation, and at least there they had the excuse of having quintupled the number of sprites they'd have needed to draw if they hadn't done it the cheating way.

Wow, last time Yahtzee gave such a review it ended up being my favourite game which i finished 6 times that year. Guess i HAVE to play this one too
@@armorhide406 subnautica (the first, not bz).
While it had its flaws, it had a certain charm that made the magic that captivated you and made you look back on the whole experience think "man, that was fun"
Wait, isn't Neon White an Annapurna game too?
Maybe the sock gnomes are a reference to the underpants gnomes from South Park? *Shrug*
Now we just need a game about the Meme Police
Watch them date themselves so quickly, lol. Movies and TV shows have tried. I personally wouldn't mind!
Wow, used a dye paintball gun for the joke. I'm impressed.
a comment to feed engagement to Suzanne, our almighty algorithmic overlord
Reminds me of first person lover
Nakedry inbound once the modders get to it. Sounds fun.
Yahtz saying there isn't a release drought on because 2 games that came out 3 months apart are pretty good. Riiiiiiiiight.
I wonder if Yahtz has seen Hard West 2?
Wait. Is FPS out? I just beat the demo this last week.
we love a little wife humor
You're not far off with the traversal. I hate it b/c of how precise you have to be with it, especially with that laundry gun.
But I still love this game b/c of its charm and meme references. Plus, when will there be another game that allows you to takedown Karens!? (And I know Postal Brain Damaged has that, but what else?)
Hmm... Either honorable mention for Top 5 or 5th place itself. That is my prediction. Does enough right for at least qualification purposes.
the part for me that makes me bounce off the trailers is the sprites not fully committing to the spriteness, such as the belt whip animation visibly rotating for the windup and followthrough and seeing all those right-angle corners on its "pixels" actively turning around as they go. Hated that in Pokemon's third generation, and at least there they had the excuse of having quintupled the number of sprites they'd have needed to draw if they hadn't done it the cheating way.
Ooohh so thats what thouse scanline glasses are called
Ooooooold school Roger Wilco sprite. Noice.
How is Stray a AAA game? It was drawn out over like 8 years because for a long time the entire dev team was two people.
"We play a sort of gender swapped Grace Jones, who is a cop on patrol for fashion crimes"
So basically we play as Kiki Chanel?
Come on now Yahtz, non-violence had its niche in old skool shooters. Do Chex Quest and Noah's Ark 3D mean nothing to you?
I hope this makes enough of an impression that we'll see some streamers play it.
If it can calm the wife down, you absolutely do not question it, because that might destroy the magic and then where will you be?
