I'm a truck driver in the US and I've been sitting all day waiting for delivery time in the morning and somehow I've run across your build vids. I have really enjoyed everything you have done. I got a chuckle out of the double flare part because I've had the same struggle. I used Stainless lines on my 67 C10 I'm building and had to buy the hydraulic tool to flare all my lines because no one local has one... I never would have used SS lines had I known what a pain they would be. You have built a really great car and I love it... even with the purple lol
Thanks mate. Thankfully I was warned off of stainless steel before I started. We don't get snow on the roads over here so there aren't really salt/rust issues anyway.

You need a plug tap for the caliper which has a full size thread to the end of the tap. Aha I see you have discovered this now...all good. Glad the brake line flaring tool is working fine with some oil on it.Talking about a particularly cold day in the south of france it looks that cold in NSW now....
Again a great video. Too many video's showing rebuilds, the host leaves out the myriad of problems someone faces. I'm glad you leave them in and show your problem solving skills/solutions.
What is the temperature down there now? Mrs. Jeff looked like she was freezing during her 'fun facts'. Right now I'm in the panhandle of Florida taking care of grandchildren, and it is 93 degrees outside.
It is about 2 degrees C here at the moment (so just above freezing), and it was blowing a gale, so the wind chill mad it much worse.
Tracker D Hey Tracker, It is about 10 degrees Celsius at Jeff's place. We are at the end of our winter. You can also hear the really strong winds we have been having the last few days as well. I love your channel! I have a request. How about you take us through the first caliper at normal speed so we can see exactly what you are doing and any solutions to problems you encounter?
I could, but to be honest it is pretty straight forward. Just blow the pistons out and then the rubber seals are pretty simple. They are actually quite easy to do. The hardest part, is getting out the second cylinder after the first one has popped.

I'm surprised that with all the effort you're doing with the engine you're not upgrading the brakes to a BBK. Maybe in the future?
And it also surprised me that you didn't paint the calipers!
I actually forgot to paint the calipers, but I was only going to paint them silver. You can't see much of them behind my wheels anyway.
As far as upgrading them, from talking to a bunch of track guys, the factory brakes are actually pretty good, so it is not really necessary.

Home Built By Jeff there is a purple brake caliper paint by G2 that would match with the color used on the car :) Pretty cheap too.

you rembered my little tip, iam hoping you paint the calipers purpel would be a nice touch. ps. there are 3 diff. for making tread the starter you had a midium and the buttom hole, cause some time going from the starter to the one you used to much . but seing as you are only recutting not making a fresh tread that problem is not there.
did you get new rubber lines between body and swingarm???

Haha. I do like the 944's so I may do one some day, but I have the Datsun and the Alfa to finish first.
That's an intermediate tap. A bottoming has no taper to it. Many supply shops don't even know this. Had to tell my local one the difference. Anyhow, so long as it did the job :)

I hope you didn't get any brake fluid spray on that lovely orange paint! I've rebuilt a bunch of Audi calipers, I use compressed air and put the caliper into a cardboard box because when that piston lets go it sounds like a firecracker and they shoot out pretty violently. Great work! The missus does a great job as well, was she a t.v. presenter or actress? Has a very good on-camera presence.

Double flares can be tricky. If the tube isn't cut perfectly square they will most likely mess up.

Suprised you didn't paint those calipers. That purple you use would look really trick tucked behind those fuchs. Breaks on my 79' 930 were painted black from the factory, but I've seen new ones in both red and yellow. Just a suggestion.
Oh, or even painted purple plad, that would be customized awesome.
I was actually planning on painting them silver but I forgot. The issue is the purple paint I have is not 'high temp' so it wouldn't last.
Hiya Jeff, you'll be right to use any automotive 2 pack type paint on the calipers themselves, no high temp paint needed...it's a bit of a myth. Cars coming along great btw!
Now that you mention it, you are right. I remember I airbrushed the calipers on my Skyline (back when I thought that was cool ;) ) and it never discoloured. Although I plan on getting these ones much hotter than I did on the Skyline ;)
Which Skyline did you have? You could do a video about your previous cars.

Unfortunately it is. It is more of a minor rub through, but it is in an easy place to touch up with the airbrush, so I am not too worried. As soon as I get the car on the road, it will be getting a lot more beaten up I am sure ;)

Ahh man.. Wish you hadn't started drilling it.. What i would have done is take everything out from the caliper and then heat it up A LOT. Then take vice grips, grip on the damned thing and start twisting it as it's red hot.
90% of the time it breaks loose. 10% of the time it snaps. But the odds are in favor and the only result of snapping is having to drill it out like you did in the first place..
(The vice grips have to be so tight that the metal bends a little. )
Then i continued to watch the video and realized that it's aluminium.. Damn it.

It's actually strong.
Combined with heating, even the nastiest bugger should break loose.. I've tried it on exhaust flange bolts and they opened up eventually. But i must say, the penetrating fluid helps. The oil gets in the threads and as you heat it up, the oil starts to boil and bubbles the rust loose from the inside.
Yep, Aluminium is a bugger. That penetrating fluid is a good tip though. I like it.

Absolutely! I just hesitate, as a 2 post lift would be great, but then one of the posts will always be in the middle of the garage taking up space...
I have looked at them as well. I like the fact that they don't take up much room, but they also don't really get the car much higher than Jack stands. For that sort of money, at this stage I am happy enough to do it by hand.
Jack Olsen's lift in his garage gets to a good height, but you can't get under the middle of the car (fine for 911's not so much for Datsuns and Alfas). That is why I am still in limbo over a lift.
Yeah, that one doesn't allow for much driveline work. I have seen some single post designs (one guy even made on from an old fork lift), but like you, if I were to spend the money I would go with the two post.
What is the size of your garage? I have been saving for a 20x30 (foot) metal building, and hope that it will fit my needs.
