It took me way to long to find out the origins of this track. Most of the uploads online don't really explain where this track is from, when it was made...basically any of the details. A lot of them are just reuploads of an instrumental remake, crediting it to J Dilla himself instead of the remaker or Proof. I'm glad to finally find out this is by the Funky Cowboys, which was a short-lived hip hop duo consisting of Proof and J Dilla that only really made some demos and that's it.
Yeah it's a shame that the master tape hasn't been found and/or used to make a high quality remaster. At the same time though, the shoddy quality of this rip kinda adds to the "lo-fi hip hop" sound that so many people like to attribute this to.
I sadly can't tell you where this song especially is from(from what tape e.g.), but I can tell you Proof & Dilla collaborated. There are videos of them online being on the stage and performing, Eminem mentioned in his book how jealous he was when Proof got the beats by Dilla and these songs they made as funky cowboys. They released an EP in '95 "Anywhere", pretty rare find. Also Dilla collaborated with Proofs group 5 Elementz, he produced the entire EP of Yester Years and a big part of the "album that time forgot", which I got a copy of. All real, you can BTW ask some of the artists outta Detroit on this, some of them can be found under videos like this here lol. We all know these joints, Proof was a legend in the Detroit Underground.
