It's wonderful to listen to such a thoughtful and intelligent composer like Newman. Accommodating enough to do a deep dive into the meaning of his songs. I could listen to him all day. Unique in popular music.

Newman is such a great song writer. He has written such beautiful songs, and slightly sarcastic songs ❤
I’d love to hear him talking about many more of his songs eg, ‘I Think It’s Going To Rain Today’.

It's so sad, why any people don't understand the lyrics of Randy Newman, he's a special composer with special songs, a music genius!!!

He’s realllly bad. Music and singing isn't good, regardless if the lyrics are. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I hung around after one of his shows long enough to go backstage with several others and talk with him, individually. He is the coolest, most down-to- earth guy. Just so accommodating to everyone. One of the musical greats.

Great stuff! Randy Newman is a national treasure. Read an interview once where he claimed (bullshitting, perhaps) that the lyrics were about getting his little daughter ready for her bath."You can leave your hat on" because she didn't need to wash her hair. 😊

There will never be a voice like Randy again it would be auto tuned to death today which is such a shame

Thank you so much for this. No one like Randy. The oldest LPs I've held onto, I'm 73, date back to '68: Randy's, Randy Newman, and Nyro's, Eli & the 13th Confession. I am so HAPPY that Randy is still with us.

I find it amazing that someone would write sail away from a point of view of a confidence trickster slaver guy, that's why I say Randy a movie maker in song incredible

Mahler and Schubert on the piano for creative source material? I would love to see what Randy has in his library. Well posted John.

Randy Newman was never a guy who sang from the perspective of the swaggering male self that Tom Jones or even Joe Cocker embodied with You Can Leave Your Hat On. It's a different mood with far less irony in their versions. Same with Sail Away; I can't imagine anyone performing that song without a heavy, heavy dose of irony.

Yeah, absolutely. I’ve been trying to put that sentiment in words. I’ve been in situations where the singer did Sail Away like a sensitive love song- or American anthem. Eventually, we got down and I told him what was going on lyrically. After gettin’ it, he said, “Jeezus, man. I pictured an older European- y’know- a father, hand on his son, Wog’s, shoulder inviting him to sail to America! Oh, Jeezus! Buckwheat and watermelon, no, no,no”.
Pretty funny watching him wake up.!

I loved the original and the cover but I greatly appreciate the original with the explanation behind it. I hope I can explain this: Helmut Newton photographed many female nudes in B&W. It seems to me that the nude women were tall, strong and, in the poses that demanded dominance over the fully dressed male figures in the images

I like his original version best and I don't see it as a weak man/pro woman thing at all. To me it's from the viewpoint of a wizened mature dude but who still has his crutch of desire and grasping and articulates it seductively well after a long day of some battle lol.

Randy Newman is the patron saint of marginalized characters. A lot of characters in his songs sound like my my avoidant negligent father begging for sympathy.

Randy is a genius. I do think Cocker's version is great though. To see/hear his best version, look for 'Joe Cocker - You Can Leave Your Hat On (LIVE in Rotterdam)'.

Joe Cocker staged this song and Randy Newman played it (whatever the meaning is). Similar to JJ Cale songs played by Clapton or Jack Bruce songs played by Collosseum (theme for an imaginery western, Rope on ladder to the moon).

My wife felt sorry for the guy in the song. She though of a pathetic guy. She got it on the spot. No life with no power at all and no relationships just paying for someone. Pathetic.

Randy is cool, but he didn't have the balls to "Sex Up" the song. Maybe its a Jewish thing. But Joe hung out with Rockers and Bluesmen and grew up with a certain take on life that gave the song an unapologetic zing. You can't be sheepish when singing this song. Gotta have Swag and Confidence.

    • @JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES
      @JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Randy explains in the interview that when he wrote the song he thought it was about a rather pathetic guy - not confident sexually. Joe’s version is obviously very different but that doesn’t make Randy’s less valid

Aside from the anti-Semitism, this song is meant to be ironic. The narrator that Randy Newman portrays, is not a tough sex god but a rather pathetic whoremonger. It only makes it more ironic and hilarious that so many people see the song as "sexy" with that "swag and confidence" you're talking about and thus completely miss the underlying meaning🤣🤣
