    Will, could you do a video on how to read dogs body signals? I, for one, do not feel confident letting my dog interact with other dogs as I am not sure .

    • @drivingmissmolly
      @drivingmissmolly ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Then don’t let him interact until you learn a bit more. It’s ok for your dog not to play with other dogs all the time. Look up some videos on TH-cam, this guy is great and there are other trainers and behaviorists on here too, and do ALOT of video watching. Don’t just watch one video and think that person is correct, fact check them with other videos. Good luck!

      Ive been looking and researching for a little over a year now and i still can’t confidently read their body language. I have found a few good videos that explain it pretty well but thats about it.

    • @SprayandPrayman22
      @SprayandPrayman22 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There’s no concrete answer to the question of body language for dogs. Each breed, each dog, displays attitudes and emotions differently. There are certainly commonalities and generalities. The best thing you can do is take your dog to pet friendly stores, specifically pet food stores, where there are bound to be other dogs that are almost always on leash, (as most, if not all, stores requires all animals to be leashed or crates). You can start evaluating how your dog reacts to other dogs and potentially pull them out of there if they get reactive. Remember to go during quiet times to limit initial interactions.

    Thank you for mentioning the tail wagging bcs I have a border collie mix who smiles when he’s nervous and a lot of times ppl will see pictures of him on boats or outside chasing fireworks and think “oh he’s such a happy adventure dog” and what they don’t see is how he will literally crawl into your lap and be on top of u like a cat on the Fourth of July. What you don’t hear is the loud intense whining that follows each terrified bark and howl. Just because my dog is smiling in the picture and has his ears up doesn’t mean he’s happy. He’s panting and his ears are up because he’s alert and afraid. He’s running circles around the pool because he’s terrified of water and thinks I’m drowning not because he’s having a good time. I try to give him plenty of breaks during outings that stress him out and whatnot bcs usually whatever’s stressing him out is either preceded or followed by something he deeply enjoys like chasing waves or running around in fields

      I hate to ruin the moment of abuse. But a lot of times this is actually animal instincts. I got a dog who was not socialized who lived in a rabbit cage above ground type deal for the first 5 months of life. It was nearly feral. I have had a tough time in the last 7 months training the dog to be a “normal” dog who tolerates people and other dogs. The wild instincts are tough to break. I had to do all types of custom training including primitive techniques that domesticated dogs in the first place. Treats were NOT accepted by dog for the first 2 months! Dogs are absolutely wild animals if not socialized beginning at birth. Dogs naturally do NOT like or trust humans. You can test this by going outside and finding a coyote. They WILL NOT have a single desire to be near you. In fact you will be lucky to even be close enough to see one! Domestic bred dogs are the exact same by nature. By the way, dogs are NOT unpredictable, even the wild ones. They all speak the same body language. You need to learn it before owning a dog or risk injury to yourself and others in household.

      @@lisaduehr5306 Thanks for your reply. I should share more with you on this matter. I suggest putting the dog under if you acquire a dog like this. It’s best to move on and find another dog. The time and energy it takes is very serious. I dedicated my life for 7 months to save a similar dog. 14 hours a day. It was going to be put under so I took it, no shelter will handle feral dogs as it’s a waste of their time as well. But be aware, that this is highly likely due to lack of socialization from birth. Very very important for these animals to be around other dogs and humans the first months of life. Genetics may play a little but NURTURE in the early months is certainly important. 5 months of age is TOO late but certainly could been worse. My dog is a good dog now after being a year old. But will always have trust problems with strangers. Note: I have other dogs, top of the class, that trained this dog on the dog side…most people DO NOT have other dogs that can handle feral. Be VERY careful around dogs. In fact, I do not suggest for anyone to own a dog if they never owned one in their childhood. They are very dangerous animals to humans. But this is DUE to man selectively breeding them. Note my dogs DO NOT eat man made kibble. They are all fed real food from the earth. (Whole real food, no processed) It takes more time and energy to do but is well worth it. The dogs are better mentally and physically. A lot of problems are also from poor diets often found in dog foods. Maybe I can get more into this next time. Thanks again.

    I have a puppy born Feb 18th and I got her when she was just 8 weeks old maybe 12 at most. She’s never been beat but seems super fearful will that go away with more time or is there more training to do? I would appreciate some advice on how to get her out of that state. I do the leadership making her look at me thing and we also love and shower her with probably to much attention. She is perfect in every other aspect and the worst we done was put her outside and lock the door for ten minutes maybe that was a mistake? the two or three times she peed in the floor the first week. It did potty train her very fast food and me and my gf are her “treasures” During our training she is not worried about what’s going on around her but I can’t get her to stop being scared when she is resting of the wind or door knocking even tho I take her everywhere and she’s been super social her whole life with dogs and nice people and I consistently and constantly have the same few ppl over each week and she is scared of red coffee cans for some reason she flung her toy into one and flipped out one day so I learnt that but yeah I’m not sure it she’s scare cause everything is new or if it’s something else she is super duper smart btw like when I forced her to pee in the rain I’d stand outside with her and hold the door shut by the door knob and when I locked her outside for peeing in the house during the first week she noticed me doing that and tried opening the door with the doorknob but the deadbolt was locked it was wild.

    Will I have a 4 month old Shepard cross Collie rescue dog and she just wants to be on her own most of the time I've had her for 3 weeks now she has slowly bonded with my other dog she follows him around for guidance, I just want to show her that she doesn't have to be fearful anymore,she allows me to give her attention but when she's had enough she'll move away from me... she hardly wags her tail and she keeps her head down, I want to work with her to build confidence and trust but I'm not sure where to start,she only plays with my other dog, she doesn't chase after a ball or want to take part in playing with me or my husband,and when we're playing with our male dog she'll redirect he's attention on her to play with her,but she has had an abusive past and I understand that she's going to need time to come around,but is there any kind of way to work with her to show her that not all people are as bad as the one's from her past.

    Have you already uploaded any content on how to work with scared and fearful bystanders? Maybe it's not the dog that is afraid, but the world around them is afraid and it's not helping the dog's training any. I have a Malinois, she's sweet as pie and honestly doesn't even look that intimidating in my eyes. But there are a lot of people who shriek, run, freeze, etc. the moment the see her. It's sending her weird social signals and I wish I knew how to address it. I know I can't control what anybody does, all I can control is my dog and myself. But maybe there's a way to give her positive social play with willing family/friends to kind of offset the negative way the world interacts with her day-to-day. Idk. Maybe it's not even an issue. But I'd love to know what you think!

    How to deal with eating issues like food scarcity, dog thinks he won't eat tomorrow so he wolf's everything down right here and right now.
    He often makes himself sick this way and I'm trying to get him to understand that he will always have food now.
    Any thoughts?
    He has a horrible background, very abused and terribly mistreated. Bones not set right after abuse, misshapen skull from the same. Great dog, just needs love, and he's got it now, but I want him to be happy and feel safe.

      What you can do is feed as much food through training. You could try to train the dog to leave the bowl when you say a command and put a little bit of kibble, then send away until the dog stops getting to amped up. Try to do it in a process.
      Like you ask for a , sit, down, place, stay. Then put some kibble in the bowl and don't release until the dog looks you in the eye. And restart the process again until the food is gone.
      Eventually the dog will understand that that process is a GARUANTEE that food is for them.

      At meal times use a slow feeder, which are bowls that have maze type structures inside to make the dog use it’s tongue to grab a few pieces instead of munching the whole thing at once and to slow down so they don’t make themselves sick

    • @J10969
      @J10969 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely use a puzzle bowl/slow feeder. My older lab came from a puppy mill and as soon as we got him home and he had his first meal it was plainly evident that he was always having to fight his siblings for food cause they weren’t being fed enough. He’d be done with his entire bowl in less than 30 seconds and looking for more food when we used a regular bowl. Like your dog he would make himself sick and even choke sometimes. Switched to a puzzle bowl and it forced him to eat slower. He now realizes he doesn’t have to worry about getting enough food everyday and eats slowly out of a regular bowl.
      Another tip that a trainer told us we could try is to sprinkle the food on the floor over a large area. We did this and even still do this from time to time with “snacks/extra feedings” as a form of enrichment but initially it was to also help slow the pace of his eating by forcing him to sniff out the food. Of course you will have to be ok with a little mess if you do this. 😅😂

I would definitely be interested in more ways to work with skiddish dogs how to train them well because they are so hyper vigilant. Usually there are two types of rewards for training dog, first one is food but if they are not that interested the second one will be playing/toys. Being calm is the most important thing and if you're trying to train him, play with him, give him his toy when he does what you're trying to teach him.

Dogs don't live in the past as much as humans. But they remember how they are treated it can be changed with trust and the right person and personality.
