I wonder if this can be successfully sung by 1 person, within reason. Meaning, you obviously have to cut off the word(s) whenever the overlapping line starts, but I wonder if you can carry the initial line's tune/hum while starting the next overlapping one.
As a musician, it's better to learn the main part and sing that, but, you're right, it really misses something without the echoes throughout (in two- and sometimes three-part harmony = really rich sound). Good luck!

Though it seems counter-intuitive, I think the "preacher likes it cold" does make a kind of sense when followed with "he knows I'm going to stay California Dreamin . . ." In other words, since the preacher likes the winter weather and sees no reason to leave, he knows the singer is not going anywhere, either, and will stay, dreamin' about California. Another possibility is the song was first recorded by Barry McGuire, but when it came time for the Ms and Ps to record it, they may have changed those lyrics. If you ever have a chance to talk to Michelle, ask her.
