  • Today we are having what looks like priviy soup but its really a lentil soup from 1812 and some sauages that Justine made. We'll be dicussing multiple events that happened this week in history, the new outhouse we built out on our land, a coloring book that Ron is working on for Pioneer Days and a really cool German pewter peice from the 1550s that Justine bought!

I love your coloring books. I think it would be an amazing idea if you could sell them even outside of pioneer days... I live about 8 hours from where you are, and I'm not sure I would be able to make it, but I would love to be able to buy some of those books... Also, if you made others too. I think it is an amazing idea. I love watching both Ron & Justine... you guys are so sweet together. Even though you were not crazy about the soup, that is ok because even cooking modern dishes do not always turn out great, but at least you tried it.

I usually blend my lentil soup when it's ready from the crock pot. I use a stick blender. But my soup uses red lentils, root vegetables, and cajun spice and creamed coconut or coconut milk, so it's more of an Asian style lentil soup. I love green lentils but they are not the best for soup as Ron and Justine found out. I use green lentils to have with rice or made into a cottage pie. Red lentils have a lovely colour for soup.

I love lentil soup. Make it with chopped onion, garlic, sliced carrots, lentils, salt and pepper, cooked in beef broth. So good. Lentils were even eaten during the Old Testament days. So that makes it even better knowing it was eaten that long ago. Lentils are legumes (beans) and are loaded in protein.

I don't know if someone 200 years from now will regard it as historically valuable, but I have one of my childhood coloring books... 63 years old! It was my favorite one... "Fairy Tale" pictures. Mostly all pages are colored. Along with other 1950-60s toys and books of mine, this coloring book has survived miles of travel, moves, packing, unpacking, and my periodically perusing my artistic skills!

That lentil soup sort of reminds me of the pease pudding that I made about a week ago, from a recipe from Martha Lloyd's Household Book; because I made it with dried split peas (because that's what's available in my local store) rather than the fresh peas that the receipt calls for, it has a greenish-brownish color that is very close to that most entertaining of all historical color names, "goose-turd green". Tasted good, though, because it had lots of herbs in it!

My Italian mother used make a soup out of green lentils a lot and had get left lentils beans for days straight every time my mother made lentils.
First they be like a soup on the first day and I had eat lentils when they got mushy for a few days straight.
She used garlic in her lentils.

I make red lentil soup and it always turns light brown. But I love lentil soup. I made a butternut squash soup this winter and added a purple sweet potato. Big mistake, the soup was brownish purple and no one wanted to try it. However it actually tasted very good. So I think visuals are very important when it comes to palatable foods. If you leave out the cloves and mushrooms, keep it chunky, it will taste better 😉

You too crack me up. You are such a hoot and remind me so much a lot of times of my husband and I. Your story about the rooster. I have always worked professionally with horses been around huge rats, all kinds of things. But I’m gonna tell you the one thing that made me scream like a little girl was a rooster we had once that this thing would do sneak attacks on you. Come out of nowhere and just start a flogging and he tried to get up in your eyes.finally the last time that happened I said Jackie you go get that 22 now. And you know that old bugger was so tough. We couldn’t even eat them after we stood them. He was mean now and he was old. So Justine, I feel your pain.

Once, when I was a child, my mother decided to "spice up" our St. Patrick's Day dinner by dying the gravy green. It was not green- it was visually repulsive. The dogs ate very well that night!
Btw, unlike the lentils, the pewter ladle is beautiful!

Funny seeing the real reactions. Myself, I would add the sausages as well. If I was hungry though I'd chow down on the sludge. It would be fun to see you take some of these old receipts and make them your own using ingredients and techniques of the era they are from. I'm thinking use 3-5 cloves of garlic, keep the lentils whole and mush the rest. I'm thinking used as a sauce to go with some roasted chicken even would be nice and it would be a good filler.
