Great review. This comic just kinda checks all the boxes for me. Beautiful art. Check. Humor. Check. Characterization and relationships. Check. Action. Check. And I'm just a sucker for stories about stories (as someone who reads voraciously and who gets paid to hear people's stories I see their power).
Cool review! I picked up the first trade of this and liked it so much I immediately bought the deluxe volume one. I haven’t finished this yet but I’m excited to dig into it when I have the time!
I sincerely hope you enjoy! I read the first three volumes in paperbacks a few years ago, definitely beautiful in the deluxe oversized format. I finished the volume two deluxe this week as well-great series
I have read this book through digital, and I really love once and future that comic made me appreciate arthurian stories even more. Also, how the way gillen tells a story with european/uk folklore in that caliber. Made me wish gillen continued once & future just to see more londonian myths mixed with epic fantasy/action, despite the rushed ending. I really enjoy my time with the story and characters. Side note have you bought uxm tpb vol.1? I am so excited to hear your thoughts on the trade 😊
I am finally going to pull the trigger on this one. Thank you for another great review, Dominick. Have you already read the first volume of Shazam by Waid and Mora? Great fun. Enjoy your weekend. 👊🏻
@@benupc if you decide to pick it up I hope you enjoy! I finished the series this week and I thoroughly enjoyed it from end to end! 👏 I have not read Shazam yet, but I did finally read the first volume of their World’s Finesr run a few weeks back-I can’t remember if I mentioned that. Solid solid stuff, and I loved the art of course 📚 Cheers!
The art is absolutely phenomenal and is the best reason to read this. Sadly, I thought the story missed a lot of its potential. The first issue had me hooked on the premise, but the story gets bogged down by the increasingly convoluted lore and rules of how the magic works. Duncan is one of the most boring protagonists I've read in a long time. Even the other characters call him boring, and he doesn't really argue. Bridget is far and away the most interesting part of the book, but she's the only character with any real meat. I got really excited when another character from lore showed up, but then literally nothing was done with them. Overall, I think the simple and really intriguing premise of "What if Arthur returned, but he was evil?" is ruined by overcomplicated plot and underdeveloped characters. I didn't have any desire to read volume 2 after I finished.
@@BlueBoboDoo100 I think your perspective is valid, though I perhaps disagree on a few of your points personally. It may come down to flavor for me. I think characters worked well as an ensemble, and I found the blending of characters with stories to be a fun wrinkle that added a degree of nuance to the general characterization. How Gillen played with the idea of stories and legends I found to be very engaging and generally unique-even the multiple sourced or interpretations of some do these legends was a fun sandbox for him to play in I felt. Agreed that the art is absolutely astounding! While I always love Mora’s pencils, I thought Tamra Bonvillain’s coloring on this series was a Triumph-it really underscored how much a colorist can elevate an already wonderful piece of art. Have you read Gillen/Mora’s Once & Future? 📚🤔🗡️

Well said! Yeah I would’ve loved to see Gillen and Mora tackle more lore based storytelling.
I have yet to pick up UXM but hope to eventually!

Hated the story, just dumb and frivolous. The granny character was cringe. Art was amazing. I struggled to finish it.
Different strokes for different folks, I really enjoyed it personally. Agreed though art is impeccable 📚
