The fact that Joey Jordison was in a Metallica cover band must've made the the Metallica camp breathe a sigh of relief. It's one thing knowing the songs but to have actually played them over and over in a band setting is another. Muscle memory makes a difference.
Dave is a cool guy. In the early 2000s I met him in Victorville CA at a little club where bands were playing. We only talked a few minutes but was very humble and cool as hell. One of my favorite drummers as well.
Joey Jordison and Dave Lombardo had something in common that Lars doesn't: they never stopped working on their craft. Real artists don't let success get in the way of becoming better. If you're serious about your craft, you're always trying to get better. Danny Carey is a better drummer now in his 60's than when I first saw him for the Undertow tour.
I somewhat agree but Lars got burned out from the justice tour. The psychological health of most of the band kept getting worse during this era as grieving for Cliff became more apparent. AJFA album was a coping mechanism for Cliffs death... That album is the heaviest and most political album Metallica has done. And because of it James doesn't like getting political anymore. During or maybe after the black album thats when they were getting heavy on their drug abuse.... Which Lars has admitted has affected his drumming

@@rgdec74 without Dave Mustaine, there wouldn't be a Metallica. Dave wrote half their first album, without his songs, they wouldn't of had enough material to make their first album, and might've missed their shot. Dave was replaced and the band went on to be fine. Lars could've been replaced after their first album and they'd of gone on to be fine. James and Kirk at the ones coming up with the riffs, Lars just chimes in on which riffs go where. It's not like he's a Michael Romeo and composing all the music himself.
@@twiggsherman3641 True but irrelevant to the conversation. Joey and Lombardo are claimed that as artist they continue to develop their technique while Lars did not because of his success. My response is to that topic. The history of Dave Mustaine is irrelevant. The riffs and music are made up by Kirk and James, however, the arrangements include Lars. He is intricately involved with the arrangements and production of the music. The are many examples of this but the biggest ( just because of its popularity) is Enter Sandman. The riffs came from a Kirk Hammett recording. The arrangements was by Lars. Lars may not have developed lightning speed. Maybe he lost some of that mojo. I was there as a bright-eyed 17-year old kid. I was a Slipknot fanatic at that point and had gone to Download specifically to see them (they hadn’t long released Volume 3) and Korn play. Slayer were good - also good to see Damageplan - 6 months later Dimebag was shot. I digress, the musical landscape was a bit different back then. While Slipknot had made massive inroads into the scene by this point, they were far from the festival-headlining behemoth they are today. In 2004 they were a mid-afternoon band. It’s weird to think, but back then, Slipknot were on the more extreme end of the metal spectrum. You wouldn’t have taken a kid to one of their shows. They were ferocious maniacs which scared the parents of young metalheads. It was marvellous to see Metallica play with competent drummers and a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle to see my then-favourite drummer (Joey Jordison) with them. Great memories.
Not true. Dave got better and is amazing. But in the early days he was just fast and didn't really have a pocket or groove and it shows. Reign in Blood is sloppy as hell. Lars on the other hand had a super tight groove and great feel, and was always perfect in transistions, over time though he has gotten sloppy.
actually when james slipped his disc it was Jason pretty much all the time and he was fucking great singer, never realized it till then. James would go off stage for like 3-4 songs while jason took over
Funny. It dropped in my recommends yesterday as well. Banging on Lars has been a trend that has never interested me much however they sounded incredible with Dave Lombardo. It’s a stark reminder of the impact a great drummer can have on a band.
Rest in peace Joey you are awesome man and Metallica I couldn't imagine being on the drums looking to my left Hatfield to my right Mustane, that would just freaking blow my mind besides I'm playing drums with Metallica
I was there maaaaaaaannnnnn. Prior to their set, the crowd was awash with flying bottles; truely an exceptional sight. Think it might've also been Dimebag's last UK gig with Damage Plan :(
I was there with 10s of thousands of others. great show great to see these guys step up! Joey and Dave were and are monsters behind the kit. Lars was missing but not missed as it turned into something special......... remember kids know your limits with the devils dandruff or you may lose your job!
Not really. You could tell the style difference between Joey and Dave. Dave is old school thrash. He was powerful and didn't overdo it. Joey was obviously an amazing drummer, but he overplayed his parts, he tried to make Metallica sound like Slipknot and it was just off. Dave on the other hand, best performance of Battery ever.
I respect him a lot and he was a great drummer but Joey added too much double bass which kinda killed the flow of the song for me, at least Dave played it somewhat closer to the album version.
Joey did the heavy lifting for sure. What everyone remembers though was Lombardo behind the kit for Battery. Read the comment section for that video here on YT 😀
I was there , such an epic show , was reported straight after that Lars had a panic attack on the plane prior to the show , glad I saw this one, the rumours in the crowd are rubbish , no one had a clue until the band came out and announced and it wasn't long after they took the stage finally , so incorrect there as I was literally in the centre 😉, Joey absolutely made that show R.I.P.
Lombardo ,hands down, is and will always be the greatest metal drummer ever! \m/-_- You should hear him with Suicidal Tendencies! Insane! Him and Rocky absolutely killed it! And Muir still hits his notes and unheard of energy!……….
20 Years later and I think St.Anger became some Kind of a legend of its own. Its special, one of a Kind. Its raw, emotional and it was a mainly for them, to Fix their Issues and put every bit of that Anger into something. Yeah, Snare is Obnoxious, but it has so many absolute bangers and it became one of my favorite albums of Metallica
Drummers are the best musicians. I play several instruments and also TAMA. 🥁 understand Lars situation, I have been through the same situation where your cognitive mind closes down due to stress and anxiety . Metal for ever ✌️🤘🎸🥁🏴🇦🇺
Metallica is usually in the "ok I guess" category. But the video of Dave playing Battery put them firmly in the "fricking awesome" for the duration of the song. Hearing that he barely knew how to play it makes it even more impressive because Dave and Rob is going hard and James looks like he's having the time of his life.
I've seen most of your content and catch up when I can. But I really feel like this could have been a 2 parter. There was more than enough to focus on Dave and more than enough to give Joey a full video. While I can't speak for the fan base I think connecting deep dives would be a great idea for building your channel.
If only they had toured together (yes i know that they toured with Megadeth & Anthrax as a part of the big 4, but if Metallica & Slayer had toured together)
Araya nailed it -- "They sounded more like Metallica is supposed to sound." That's exactly the feeling I got -- that Dave was a perfect fit. Poor Lars. But not poor Lars, so okay. There was just something specifically magical about Lombardo and Met.
It isn't about the volume of songs, nor is it about the capability of the drummer. Joey was an amazing drummer. But Joey played Lars, Dave played Dave. This was the time of St. Anger a less than well received album and after coming off the divisive load/re-load albums. So having a drummer that is changing it up is why he is being given more credit
I love Metallica, not so much of a Lars fan. His drumming is fine, it's his attitude and "my way or the highway" mentality. The final mix on the Justice For All album is a perfect example. He is solely responsible for that shit mix on one of their best albums ever made. Dave in not only a far superior drummer than Lars, but his easy going demeanor would be like a blast of cool air on a hot summer day for all the other members. The tension he brings into a room is like putting on socks when your feet are wet. Just not comfortable.
I mean i feel bad for Jason, love him, but i gotta disagree here, the AJFA mix is a huge part why that album is so special. Every AJFA-now-with-bass-mix on the internet sound like sh*t and proves that point.
@@pfzt Well, you're the first person I have heard with this view. I have listened to several remixes with boosted bass and they sound good to me. Maybe a little too boosted but that is better than no bass at all. And yes, the album is still one of their best and iconic because of that. But don't let these amature mixers on TH-cam who remix. A real pro that can mix would make that album even better than it is. Peace
@@pfzt Naw,u could definitely tell the difference when Metallica played live w Jason on the AJFA tour as opposed to when Lars drown him out on every track, and back then,it was the tours and shows that sold the records the most.Nowadays it's just the computer....Queensryche,Suicidal Tendencies, and Metallica was the show that came to my hometown back then.
Dallas Tx GnR Metallica concert. I think it was the one immediately after theMontreal incident. That night it was GnR's turn to close. Lars should've felt nervous when Dave Lombardo played with Metallica. Lars is a kid at the beach banging on a plastic bucket compared to Dave. Lars is fortunate he's a core contributor to the band's overall artistic vision. It certainly isn't for his drumming skill.
The way I understand it Dave only played two or three songs, not more. the other drummer one and Joey played the rest of the set. It was more like Joey Jordison saved that day.
This might have been worthwhile... I made the mistake of seeing Metallica live once... worst gig I have ever been to.. no energy, just dull. it's always great when musicians r willing to help other bands. i don't think i've ever heard dave play but i respect him for being willing to help. i really only clicked on the video to hear about joey though. good video. thank you.
Lombardo made Metallica sound amazing that night
Dave can drum circles around Lars any day!
👍🤘
So could that chick from the White Strips.
@@daBEAGLE1017 no she couldn't
@@Miist3rDuce1 nahhhhhhh, really?
Not true. Dave got better and is amazing. But in the early days he was just fast and didn't really have a pocket or groove and it shows. Reign in Blood is sloppy as hell. Lars on the other hand had a super tight groove and great feel, and was always perfect in transistions, over time though he has gotten sloppy.
St. Anger is one of my faves. Raw, unadulterated power
Agree, couldn't care less about the haters
So cool that they could come together wen it matters love that story
Joey and Dave are absolute LEGENDS.
I love the quote where the guy basically says he would prefer Lars die over him leaving the band alive.
actually when james slipped his disc it was Jason pretty much all the time and he was fucking great singer, never realized it till then. James would go off stage for like 3-4 songs while jason took over
Anyone can replace Lars - but Lars cant replace anyone
Love Dave...great vid
.🤘🤘🤘👊👊♥️♥️😎✌
I watched them play Battery with Dave Lombardo live yesterday as a TH-cam suggestion. It was amazing.
Dave's doing a great job on The Misfits reunion shows
Anyone who was there will have fond memories of the epic bottle fight that took place during the delay waiting for Metallica to hit the stage!
I was there maaaaaaaannnnnn. Prior to their set, the crowd was awash with flying bottles; truely an exceptional sight.
Think it might've also been Dimebag's last UK gig with Damage Plan :(
Real up-to-the minute news. Excellent.
Crazy because there was probably 100's of people in the audience that could play every song.
I was there with 10s of thousands of others. great show great to see these guys step up!
Joey and Dave were and are monsters behind the kit. Lars was missing but not missed as it turned into something special......... remember kids know your limits with the devils dandruff or you may lose your job!
Dave did a great job but, Joey was the real hero that day.
Nailed it. Thank you.
@@redrumloa I love Slayer and no disrespect to Dave but nah~ I only remember Nathan (Joey) putting Lars to shame on Lars' own drum kit. Just saying
Crazy stuff
Joey playing Creeping Death at this gig is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
Fuck MS
🤘🧙♂️🤘
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
No it wasn't he overplayed it
I was there , such an epic show , was reported straight after that Lars had a panic attack on the plane prior to the show , glad I saw this one, the rumours in the crowd are rubbish , no one had a clue until the band came out and announced and it wasn't long after they took the stage finally , so incorrect there as I was literally in the centre 😉, Joey absolutely made that show R.I.P.
Marshall with that Sweet Blind Illusion shirt...
Lombardo ,hands down, is and will always be the greatest metal drummer ever! \m/-_- You should hear him with Suicidal Tendencies! Insane! Him and Rocky absolutely killed it! And Muir still hits his notes and unheard of energy!……….
i wish i could see them
Is Dave any good with Misfits?
Dave CRUSHED it. I would love to hear Dave as Metallica's full time drummer.
2:28 How could Lar's departure from the band be considered the worst thing to happen?
I've seen most of your content and catch up when I can. But I really feel like this could have been a 2 parter. There was more than enough to focus on Dave and more than enough to give Joey a full video. While I can't speak for the fan base I think connecting deep dives would be a great idea for building your channel.
Dave Lombardo is such a classy stand up guy.
Dave definitely took that show in different level! in fact, anyone can replace Lars, no pun intended.
The night Joey Jordison saved the performance ... along with Dave Lombardo. Both awesome drummers.
Great video.
I WAS THERE, IT WAS SICK
Rip to joey.
Joey was great. He was the only drummer who did a great job stepping in for David Silveria as well.
Joey did most of the set.
I don't get why people downplay Joey's role in the show.
Because Dave made them sound better. Joey sounded like a fill in. Like the entire set they played that night is not good other than the Dave songs
They already did a video that focused on Joey. I assume who you focus on more depends on if you like Slayer or Slipknot more.
That thumbnail looks like it should read "The Night Dave Lombardo attacked Metallica “ 😂
Joey was the 🐐 saving Metallica .RIP
He overplayed it
Very nice
Metallica briefly showed what they would be like with a real drummer.
👍🤘
dave lombardo a great drummer🤘
What’s with the blurred parts?
That first picture at the end of Joey playing with James, thats totally Clown on the floor behind him with the camera.
I swear bro these are the most low effort, lazily put together videos, and I don’t know why I keep watching them
Joey played more songs than Dave the headline should be the night Dave & Joey saved Metallica.
I was there 😁
Dallas Tx GnR Metallica concert. I think it was the one immediately after theMontreal incident. That night it was GnR's turn to close. But since I was a nut for Metal Church, I thought John Marshall kicked ass! James had a stool to sit on and wore a baseball cap and drank beer in a dry county, none of us had any
Axl pitched a bitch in the middle of November Rain and stopped the show about 15 min. All in all it was a good show, but who kicked ass and sounded the best? Mike Patton and Faith No More.
Awesome!!
I was there in 2004 🙋🏻♂️
Dave Lombardo fully charged Battery to 1000 percent.
Tom Araya said it all... said it all...
Title should be; "The Night Dave Lombardo Played Metallica songs better than Lars with a few hours notice"
Seriously I never heard Battery sound that good. Just hilarious Dave did it better over Lars who had 20 years of playing it
I heard Battery sound that good, but it was during the Master of Puppets tour and Cliff was still alive, but since then...nah
@@williamjosephdunn5879 Lars was better years ago but never was able to replicate Lombardo's double kick drum technique.
Wasn't the same without Lars. Lars is awesome!
Dave and Joey are way way better a drummer than Lars could ever hope to be!! Fact!!
@@paulhabrelewicz5226 Lars' strong points nowadays are in songwriting and composition. I agree that Lars isn't really on top of his game anymore, but have you ever heard the isolated drums from Dyers Eve?
Lars fits Metallicas sound perfectly but by no means is he a great drummer.
Lars needs a click track. I can't stand listening to their sped-up versions of song when live.
@@paulhabrelewicz5226 lombardo and jordison are better off in their own projects than Metallica, also a fact
"Metallica sounded more like Metallica should sound like" - That's an understatement.
No it isn't dummy, they are better off in their own projects than Metallica
@@Miist3rDuce1 Que?
Imagine saying no to playing drums with metallica
This story is how many years old now
Worse? Lars departing from the band? That would be GREAT! Dave made Metallica sound AMAZING again.
I just have to say death is way worse than leaving a band!!!!!
the day metallica had a good drummer
14 in-laws will mess you up every time.
I think you posted this already
No that one was about Joey Jordison
Rip joey. Ure the best.
Who all wishes they would have kept Lombardo?
Joey!!!!!!
Lombardo Is a God.
"That one night metallica had a good drummer" -there ya go, fixed the title lol
no not fixed idoit, it should say the one night that Metallica suks with different drummers
I was there, the atmosphere was getting pretty heavy, I told a crowd what had happened to lars, he had disappeared up his own arse!!!
Would it really be that hard to replace Lars, god love him?!?
RIP Superball
I was there that year, was a great show
A year before metallica played a secret set in a tent at download festival, in 2004 they had another secret band, a lot of rumours going around that it was motley crue being the secret band, instead of motley crue they got funeral for a friend
No idea why they went to metallica to FFAF
Got my ticket for next years download already l, rumours going around metallica playing for 2 days
Joey...
😪
(Load/re-load era) then St. Anger, at that point I just gave up on the band. Still love all the albums up to Black and there are some great tracks on load/re-load.
@Matt YT, was the show you caught recent or many years back? I don't want to waste the cash if the band's heart ain't in it anymore & the crowd can tell.
@@twistoffate4791 it was late 90's on the load/re-load tour.
If you do go, I hope you enjoy it :)
@@twistoffate4791 I've been to gigs of other big bands (besides Metallica) that weren't bad by any stretch, yet on the night I just wasn't 'feeling' it, for whatever reason.
Having seen Metallica twice (2010 and 2013), my only regret is that I didn't go to see them in earlier years when there was the opportunity Edit : And can't wait to see them again!
