You need someone to go out on the field to "Witch" for water location either with a tree branch or a metal coat hanger. People may scoff at this idea, but it works ! My Dad always "Witched" on his properties with a metal coat hanger and never drilled a dry well. He always had success with wells having lots of water in them.

I use brass braising rods to locate water. In this age of lydar there's no excuse for a dry well if there's any water down there.
Geologist now fly over soil formations with very sophisticated equipment and are able to locate many minerals including gold and silver deposits. That's the land China wants to buy up. It's known to everyone except the owners to have valuable minerals.

Hoping Dunbar’s eye will heal without loss of sight. Regarding your water situation, you have several barns with large roofs and you could do rain catchment into cisterns. Then use that for your water troughs. I know you have dry summers, but you do have rain and snow melt in the rest of the year that you could capture. Best of luck!!!

Dunbars eye is an infection caught from fly's I'd defo say- here in the UK with cows like like we call it new forest disease, pink eye or various other names. Iv usually put an antibiotic tube under the eyelid for 3-4 days or a vet can inject antibiotic and cortisone under the membrane, in dairy cows, quite easy. No idea how the hell you can do that with an American bison??? Good luck?

I had my sister witch my well, then called in the crew to dig the well. She hit the water right on the spot and depth she said. She said that was the best spot as there were three streams merging there. If the well diggers had dug where they wanted, I don't think it would have turned out as well. Even tho it's a shallow well, it has never run dry or been pumped dry even after 24 hours.

Hi, Dusty and family! Dusty, I'm sorry you didn't hit water at either drill site. Have you ever thought about trying Water Witching? It really does work. You might try to witch yourself, although it doesn't always work for everyone. I did it myself in the mid-1970s while working on a dairy farm. The hired man was supposed to track the water from the well-house to the spring hole by the windmill, as the owners were going to be doing some underground work on the main driveway, but the bent copper rods he was working with weren't working for him, I asked him if I could try. He handed the rods over to me. I started at the well-house and slowly walked back and forth across the driveway in front of the garages. I followed the spring's path until I got to the windmill. I could feel the water's strong pull and watched as the two rods crossed each other. I left a mark in the dirt every time they crossed. I was later asked if I could trace the electrical wiring from the house to the barn. I didn't know if I could or not. I said I'd give it a try. I had the same results. Only the pull wasn't as strong as when I tracked the water. As the work progressed on the driveway, I was later told, after cooking supper and doing my evening chores, that I had been spot-on where the spring and wiring ran. I was happy I had saved the owners a lot of money and unnecessary delays in their project. I am sorry to see Dunbar's eye. Eye injuries happen so fast, and their unknown origins leave us baffled. I sincerely hope something can be done about it.

Sounds like you need to split the Dunbar and Hoss herd in half.
Not the way to drill for water, you need a water witch (someone that knows how to use the sticks). My great grandfather was great at it.
Praying this draught and heat ends soon. We're in SW TX on the border and they put restrictions on the farmers and ranchers for irrigation again.

I met one my grandma knew that is the last I have known of full fledged witch and that was 55 years ago and he was in his 80s, I took a workshop 30 years ago and did pretty good so there are probably more out there

I don’t remember what’s called, but I’ve seen it done and I think it’s called “water dosing” where a person used two sticks or wire and walks along until the sticks or wire start pulling to the ground. Somehow they always find a source of water. It’s just an idea. I’ve seen it done in Northern Arizona on ranches and it worked every time!! Some wells up there have had to go deep, but the supply is still there.

100 ft & still no water. Dusty, can you possibly work on a catchment system to catch & store your winter rains? Maybe that would be a partial solution.
It makes me realize just how wise & how blessed my grandparents were to have acquired 60 acres of land adjacent to the Willamette River in Oregon. I'm pretty sure they didn't have to drill deeper than 20-30 ft at most. But the back-to-back floods of Dec.1964 & Feb. 1965 sure hit us hard. Only their house & yard stayed dry. Our foundation was 4 ft off the ground & that was enough to keep it from coming inside, but our floors warped from the underneath side where water did reach. We stayed at their house just up the road. It was a hasty decision that saved our lives - we didn't know that the road had washed out in the other direction, had we headed for town instead. NEVER drive through floodwaters!
We watched a tractor disappear into those waters, and I suppose it's still buried there somewhere.
Farming & ranching is a tough living in good times. But it's a good life, & the best place to raise kids. They'll have a good work ethic.

Most people won't believe in what advice I am going to give you. Find an old fashioned water dowser, a water witch. A person that can find water with a "Y" fruit tree limb. Most common limb used is cherry. Some people also use peach. All through the Appalachia Mountains for centuries. Water was found by Dowsers, Water Witches. The house I live in now. The well was found by my grandfather over 60 years ago. Well hit water at 110 feet. Drilled the pocket down to 213 feet. Wishing you the best of luck.

There are medicines to treat eye injuries. Back in June I thought my Chihuahua was going to loose his eye, he had multiple ulcers in it. I used 3 different kinds of eye meds often. The vet was a little hesitant about the medicine with the Steroid in it. Just as soon as I used it as a last resort, it healed very quickly. I hope it's not too late for Dunbar. I hope you have a vet with experience in eye issues. Hang in there Buddy!
