    • @complexemotions338
      @complexemotions338 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +63

The sheath is supposed to act like a holster. When it secured to the person it shouldn't stop you from drawing with a single hand. Regardless, a sword will always take time to deploy, due to it's size. This is why in many fighting styles, knowing how to attack and draw in one motion is an important skill.
If you'd ask him to not sheath it when not in use, you could very easily harm the blade, or allow it to rust, and if both of these occur, you've not a sword, but a baseball bat, in which case it's just as affective as a sheathed sword.

He actually used the sheath very expertly here. You can see in the video where he deflects the first strike with the sheath, then draws the sword after the attack. He's definitely had some training, though it might have been a while since his last sparring match! He waits for his opponent to make a move, then counter attacks. He doesn't just start wildly swinging a sword around.

As a fencer, I have a few observations.
If you want to keep a sword for self defense, keep it where you can draw it immediately.
If he knew how to use that sabre (military fencing) he would have quickly cut the perps hand off - training doesn’t just apply to firearms…
The video comment about lack of space to swing… you can most certainly thrust with a Sabre.

      Swords are Arms.
In State v. DeCiccio, 315 Conn. 79, 128, 105 A.3d 165 (2014), the Connecticut Supreme Court held that under Heller, the Second Amendment protects dirk knives as arms.
“Guided by the definition of the term “arms,” as articulated in District of Columbia v. Heller, supra, 554 U.S. at 624-25, 128 S.Ct. 2783 and the analytical approach employed in both Heller and State v. Delgado, supra, 298 Or. at 399-403, 692 P.2d 610, we examine the military origins and history of the dirk knife, starting with the fact that, as a general matter, fixed, long blade “[k]nives have long been part of American military equipment. The federal Militia Act of 1792 [c. 33, 1 Stat. 271] required all able-bodied free white men between [the ages of] eighteen and forty-five to possess, among other items, ‘a sufficient bayonet.’ This establishes both that knives were common and were arms for militia purposes. Colonial militia laws required that men (and sometimes all householders, regardless of sex) own not only firearms but also bayonets or swords; the laws sometimes required [the] carrying [of] swords in [nonmilitia] situations, such as when going to church. In New England, the typical choice for persons required to own a bayonet or a sword was the sword because most militiamen fulfilled their legal obligation to possess a firearm by owning a ‘fowling piece’ (an ancestor to the shotgun, particularly useful for bird hunting), and these firearms did not have studs [on] which to mount a bayonet.”
In State v. Kessler, 289 Ore. 359, 368, 614 P.2d 94 (1980), the Oregon Supreme Court described the type of weapons typically used by militiamen in defense of home and for purposes of the militia as being a musket or rifle, a hatchet, sword and knife or pike (a long shaft with a spear head).
“The term "arms" is also subject to several interpretations. In the colonial and revolutionary war era, weapons used by militiamen and weapons used in defense of person and home were one and the same. A colonist usually had only one gun which was used for hunting, protection, and militia duty, plus a hatchet, sword, and knife. G. Neumann, Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, 6-15, 252-254 (1973). When the revolutionary war began, the colonists came equipped with their hunting muskets or rifles, hatchets, swords, and knives. The colonists suffered a severe shortage of firearms in the early years of the war, so many soldiers had to rely primarily on swords, hatchets, knives, and pikes (long staffs with a spear head). W. Moore, Weapons of the American Revolution”

“The popularity of the fighting knife has had an uneven history, even to today. During the Roman civilization and for several centuries thereafter, for example, the knife was little appreciated as a tool of combat, but during the Viking Period of the 9th and 10th centuries large knives (scramasax), used for general purposes as well as for war, were popular among the Northmen, Germans, Franks and Anglo-Saxons. It was during the Middle Ages that the real flowering of the fighting knife and dagger occurred. New shapes appeared and the knife became part of the standard dress for all classes: from the knights and their men-at-arms as an adjunct to the sword, to the laborer and peasant for protection and convenience. During the 16th century the dagger came to be used by the aristocracy, mainly in conjunction with the sword, and was used primarily for combat; indeed, during the early part of that century the technique of fighting with sword and dagger developed, thus giving rise to the modern school of knife fighting. Through the 16th and 17th centuries knives and daggers declined in importance and were no longer an important part of the daily civilian costume.”

Limiting “arms” to mean those “such as are usually employed in civilized warfare, and that constitute the ordinary military equipment”
“We think there is a manifest distinction. In the nature of things, if they were not allowed to bear arms openly, they could not bear them in their defence of the State at all. To bear arms in defence of the State is to employ them in war, as arms are usually employed by civilized nations. The arms, consisting of swords, [161] muskets, rifles, etc., must necessarily be borne openly; so that a prohibition to bear them openly would be a denial of the right altogether. And, as in their constitution the right to bear arms in defence of themselves is coupled with the right to bear them in defence of the State, we must understand the expressions as meaning the same thing, and as relating to public, and not private, to the common, and not the individual, defence.”

Holding that provisions of a state law against carrying of a pistol without a license "do not restrict nor prohibit appellant or any other person from having a pistol in his home or `fixed place of business' for the defense of himself . . ."
“It seems too plain for doubt that out of the bitter experiences of the French and Indiana Wars and American Revolution came the deep realization that the inalienable right of self-defense should be protected by constitutional guarantees beyond the power of any temporary majority in the Legislature to circumvent or abolish. The Indiana right to defense is in almost the identical language of the Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776 which stated: "That the People have a Right to bear Arms for the Defence [Defense] of themselves and the State; and as Standing Armies, in the Time of Peace, are dangerous to Liberty, they ought not to be kept up: And that the Military should be kept under strict Subordination to, and Governed by the Civil Power." Section the Thirteenth, Chapter 1, Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776. Although the Pennsylvania Dutch gunsmiths in Lancaster County started their production of guns by 1720, many on the frontier were without arms. In 1775 Conrad Weiser had written Governor Morris of his attempt to defend the Paxton people above Hunter's Mill, and reported that he "gave orders to them to go home and fetch their Arms, whether Guns, Swords, pitchforks, axes, or whatsoever might be of use against the enemy." J.I. Mombert, Authentic History of Lancaster County, Penn., p. 159. Nor was the situation much better on the frontier in the Shenandoah Valley where Washington in 1756 found that for 200 Culpeper militiamen there were only eighty firelocks. Vol. 2, Douglas Southall Freeman, George Washington, p. 185.”

“In his first and second claims, Sibley asserts that the Second Amendment protects his right to possess a cane sword both at home and in public, and that N.Y. Penal Law § 265.01(1) unconstitutionally infringes on that right by completely banning the possession of cane swords. The question is whether the Second Amendment protects the possession of cane swords. "The Second Amendment protects only the ‘sorts of weapons’ that are (1) ‘in common use’ and (2) ‘typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes.’ " N.Y. State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n v. Cuomo , 804 F.3d 242, 255 (2d Cir. 2015) (quoting Heller , 554 U.S. at 625, 627, 128 S.Ct. 2783 ). But there is a prima face presumption that the Second Amendment applies "to all instruments that constitute bearable arms." Heller , 554 U.S. at 582, 128 S.Ct. 2783. The State has the burden of rebutting this presumption. N.Y. State Rifle , 804 F.3d at 257 n.73. To do so, the State must show, at a minimum, that the weapon in question is "not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes"; it is not enough to simply show that the weapon is not in "common use." Maloney v. Singas , 351 F. Supp. 3d 222, 233 n.16 (E.D.N.Y. 2018). "While ‘common use’ is an objective and largely statistical inquiry, ‘typical[ ] possess[ion]’ requires [the court] to look into both broad patterns of use and the subjective motives of gun owners." N.Y. State Rifle , 804 F.3d at 256.”

The reason you have no such right in Canada is because you think rights can be granted. If you wait for it to be granted, you will never have it. Rights come from God, not tyrants who play dress-up. Buy a gun on the black market. If you ever have to use it, leave it at the scene, or say you took it away from the criminal. But guns are largely useless without training. In a totalitarian state like Canada, that can be a problem.

An epee is a ridged metal blade with a blunted tip about the size of a small pencil eraser. It is sometimes called a "stove poker" because of the physical similarities. Ramming an epee into a padded fencer causes significant pain, and with enough force, can cause serious to fatal injuries. Epee fencers carry bruises and lacerations *routinely*. I saved a fencing mask I was wearing that took an epee at my eye level. It bent the steel mesh into my face about an inch deep. Had I not been wearing the mask, that "blunt" blade would have gone right through my head.

I guess this kind of encounter is what you get when you don't have access to firearms. But criminals still want to do criminal things and people still want to protect themselves. Honestly, if I was the robber and I was going to get killed in a situation like that, I would have rather gotten shot with an AK-47 then hacked to ribbons with a sword.

As a practitioner of sword martial arts, i can say that the man with the saber (it may be a talwar) did a pretty good job of keeping the bad guy at bay and defending the openings of his body. And i disagree that a machete would useless. Yes, if i had to choose id use something else, but when you learn basic principles of swordsmanship (especially with short blades like machetes) YOU CAN defend yourself reasonably well; it all comes down to SKILL in the end, along with staying cool and focused while in danger.
