My dad was a police officer in a small town. He patrolled overnight alone. One night I was on a ride along when he spotted a suspicious vehicle stopping in the parking lot of a closed business. He pulled them over, it was a carload of young black men. Very sketchy situation - FBI statistics show “young black male in the company of other young black males” is the most likely traffic stop scenario to turn bad. To make matters worse he was in a radio dead spot and couldn’t reach dispatch to run the plate. While he conducted the stop I stayed back by the patrol car, behind the open passenger door concealed in the darkness behind the headlight glare with my gun drawn. I kept it down but I was ready in case anything happened. The stop was uneventful. They were driving from Dallas to Lubbock because one had to check in with his parole officer. They stopped at the business to switch drivers but the new driver didn’t have a license. No ticket given, but my dad told one of the other passengers who did have a license that he had to drive. Interesting night.

Yeah, It's kind of disturbing nobody is talking about it. In illinois, lying about your name is a secondary charge, and seeing as it was just a roadside assistance stop, they had no reasonable suspicion or primary charge. In most states the officers would have unloaded full mags into the vehicle following the first shots. They risked their lives too many times in this incident. He asked her for something probably the gun she obeyed. She was very lucky not to get shot as well.
Being a LEO is so difficult. They gave the man every opportunity even during the initial struggle to comply. If the troopers had gone in 100 from the initial hand grab, subdued, handcuffed, and avoided a death, they would be criticized for being too forceful too quick. Lord be with all LE.
Why were the cops trying to ID them in the first place? Is it a crime to be broken down? ID is like crack to cops. Maybe they need some lessons on the U.S. Constitution rather than lessons on combat tactics.
@@ActiveSelfProtection Rhetorical question. I did listen. Consensual encounter. Mike said that police kind of lose their trust in the general public. I have two questions I’m having a problem with. Why did they treat the girl as if she’s not a threat? And the biggest thing for me, is why did the officers let go and run when the suspect showed the weapon? They were right on him. If it was a bladed weapon, then I can see them running. But they could’ve drawn and shot him right inside the door. I’m an officer, and I hear a gun, I shoot….QUICK!!! Just really wondering about that. And I do agree with the fact that, I believe the officers for whatever reason were, might, I say “afraid” to apply the level of violence necessary, or better way to say it would be to do their job effectively. I think a lot of the public perception of police officers causes the officers to act in no way that is not to their benefit, maybe being overly…🤔 I don’t know. I think some officers don’t wanna look a certain way because of the way the public can perceive them. It’s really messed up. They have a job to do and it’s an extremely dangerous one. I think some of the public needs to be retrained in their thinking.

Zero chance cops will actually leave in such a case, though.
Here's how that would go: I'm changing a flat tire. Cops pull up and ask if I need help. I say no thanks I've got it. They ask for ID. I say no thanks I'm good. They now class the tire iron in my hand as a weapon. I now can't finish changing my tire because they won't leave without ID.

The bootlickers in this comment section think you are obligated to ID any time a cop approaches you. Just have that ID glued onto your jacket.
Yeah, John was wrong. Parking on the shoulder is legal specifically for emergencies. If it was clear there was a flat tire, the officers should have just illuminated the area and/or moved on. However, that does not preclude them from running the plate.
We don’t know if the cops demanded their ID. There is a difference between demand and ask. If they voluntarily gave false names instead of just refusing that is on them.

When an officer of the law asks you to identify yourself, you do it. Period. You people just have serious authority issues and cant handle being told what to do. It would go by so much faster and a lot easier if you people didnt want to always fight and argue with them because, again, your weird authority issues. Get yourselves some help.

They basically just murdered him because they got their feelings hurt over a fake name, no legal justification. It was heartbreaking to see his wife know exactly what they were doing to him but being too panicked and afraid to help save him, even when she was trying.

“I think some of the public needs to be retrained in their thinking”. Wow. Sounds downright sinister. Orwellian. So what would this “retraining” consist of? Would it be optional or compulsory? If the latter, what would the punishment be for noncompliance?
