S. S. Venerabilis Pivs PP. XII was my maternal grandfather's uncle. He married my parents and died a few months after. I always wish he would have lived to see me born. He said to my mother, "You're going to have 4 heartaches and one joy!" My mother didn't understand him and asked her father what did he mean, but sadly he never elaborated on it. My mother had 3 still births before I was born and my younger brother died at 3 years old when I was 5 years old. My mother says to this day, that I am S. S. Venerabilis Pivs PP. XII 's miracle and her one joy and the other babies were her heartaches. My parents are married 66 years and Pivs will be deceased 66 years 9 October 2024. Thank you my Great Great Uncle for my life!! I love you even though we never met. ❤ 🇻🇦 😇 ✝️ 🙏

one of the few popes who can speak many languages, not merely some short sentences, but actually to give a full speech.

I think we will see more of it. Pope St John Paull II and Pope Benedict spoke several languages well, and in public.
A very great Pope. It should be remembered that he visited both the UK and the USA before his election, so it is not surprising that he spoke English. As a young Priest, He was Leo XIII's envoy, appointed to convey the Pope's condolences to Edward VII on the death of Queen Victoria.
Later as Pius XI's Secretary of State, in 1936, he made an extensive tour of the USA, the first Papal Secretary of State to do so, including lunch with President Roosevelt
May the Church revive this kind of class, dignity, and confidence.

@@eliazarcone LOL So was John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I and our current pope (although he was raised in Argentina after his parents immigrated so he's more fluent in Spanish). None of them had the flair that Pius XII had with those rolling 'R's.'
@@retroguy9494 Pope Francis was born and raised exclusively in Argentina, but definitely to Italian (I think from Sardinia) parents and raised among many people who spoke both languages.

So 80 years ago, the Pope was able to give a speech in English and many other languages...and today, the Pope can only speak Italian and Spanish...Something went wrong.

@@-filiporozthere have been many popes, and saints who were only fluent in a single language, such as St. Augustine. Some have the gift of language, but it is not a prerequisite for the offices of the Church.
One linguistically skilled pope doesn't mean all the other normal popes are somehow bad. Respect the Holy Father
