Think about it, all that's slammed into your face 24/7 in l.a is how you look, how you're dressed, are you over weight, are you an actor or are you a suit? Kind of car do u drive, where do you live. How many followers on facebook, twitter, Instagram do you have? Just absolute nothingness. I love l.a, but like hermosa, Venice, Long Beach, garment district, some parts of Hollywood the grimy parts. Bc that's where you find everyday people. That town is just filled with too many weirdos.

  • @eliciagarcia8981

This is so true. What he's describing is the difference between people who have a sense of themselves that comes from within and is positive, and people who are missing that so they try to mold themselves into whatever gives them external validation. This relates to how you were nurtured as a child and whether you had enough external validation back then, that you were secure enough to trust yourself. The people with a strong sense of themselves don't internally define themselves by the way people treat them or the way society sees them and they are able to think for themselves and have their own opinions. People who don't have that and need external validation, are in a weird situation because whether or not they get external validation has almost nothing to do with them, it's more about the psychology of other people and sociology of society. Joe Rogan understands, he just doesn't know the lingo that psychologists use to describe it.

This describes how I feel completely. I was an actor growing up, I won a scholarship. I started to get treated badly, like yelled at a lot, and I quit. My whole life has been like this, just not being able to cope, not feeling genuine, feeling like my mother was fake and stuff, not genuine, maybe that's why I crave validation so much, and yet when I get it from her I know it's fake, just like my personality in public. Now I don't care for validation because I know it's not true. My standards for myself will never be met, and I will never be able to be relaxed and be myself because I don't even know who that is, I'm always acting. It makes relationships hard. I'm not acting superior, just in a way that lets me put my head down at night, but I still feel like it's all wrong. I've been picked on because of who I am, and I honestly think I'm not really one of those people who people need in their lives

I beg to differ. Acting is a path to wholeness and a way to embrace your shadow self that many other professions do not have. It is actually a gift. If you are doing it right, acting will make you more whole, create a better sense of unity with the world and awaken your awareness. But as Joe puts it here, most people are literally so stupid they have no idea what acting is other than external validation.

100% this. I was in drama from middle thru high school, also on newspaper staff/writer. I had the perfect storm of circumstances as a child, plus serious health issues early on. I found I could ease the harsh treatment of adults and the bullying (straight up harassment & cruelty, beyond that of young antics) by making people laugh. I could get out of the daily afternoon beating if I could make them laugh. Then I learned to not show/show emotion by displacement or thinking of something that elicited desired reaction.
Fast forward to my early twenties, I took film and stage classes and auditioned for “Unsolved Mysteries”, but didn’t get the part, yet not bothered by the rejection, that’s part of it. Turns out after that I learned something else about me - I liked benefits, paychecks and time off paid. I didn’t have a job where I could take off at a moments notice to audition. The practicality that I once despised, imbued in me by my parents, who of course warned me of having something steady, chase your dreams on the side. Perhaps they knew, but didn’t explicitly state (okay, save for Dad, who once told me as a child Hollywood and it’s contents are “dirtbags”), of the darker underbelly and seeming prerequisite of being a power mad perv/pedophile applies to anyone who is in a position of helping you out, because as we know, talent doesn’t matter when you have puppets to satisfy your every vile desire.
I thank my Father in Heaven every day for revealing what I’ve heard to be true the day I thought I had an audition and subsequent arrangements for a local (where I lived in NC) venue owner and well connected business man answered the door to his mansion in only a wide open robe and a vibratory device attached to his privates, on and humming. This was back in the 90s, suffice to say my dream chasing ended there, at that precise moment.
Mr. Rogan, certainly you are not alone in your assessment of actors and their incessant need for attention and approval, and I laud you for saying all of this out loud, from Los Angeles at that. Maybe with all of these new platforms and ways to express creativity through film and music, folks like me who just want to do what they want to do and possibly eek out a living will someday soon have the chance because Hollywood one day won’t have control over talent via open secrets and various other offenses.
I’m still queer as a three dollar bill, but thankful I didn’t head out to Hollywood, as I’m sure I’d have only found Hollyweird.

So when dude said he quit because he was secure, or okay with himself, he meant he no longer needs validation from others...a great example of this dynamic is actress Sally Field winning an oscar for best actress, she walks on stage to accept her award and cries, "you like me, you really like me!" Which reveals her fears but ironically how could we "like" her when she pretends to be other characters, we don't know the real her.🤔

Kids deal with trauma differently. Abuse can trigger your brain to compartmentalize. Some kids create pseudos, that's their brain protecting them so they can function like it's happening to someone else. You can see how both of those tools could help you become successful as an actor. You can box up all the foul stuff that happens in Hollywood, and creating and going into character is second nature. This is also probably why the victims don't come forward, it's been a normal part of their life. But sending in these personality types is like tying up a antelope in a lions cage. The sad thing is, when they got to the top- the fulfillment they need isn't there.

As a third-generation native Angelino, it used to always annoy me when I’d hear the stereotypical criticisms of LA/Hollywood people being fake and phony. I couldn’t understand it until I started to hit the nightlife scene. It was there when I realized that we natives for getting a bad rap because some of the most beautiful people from little towns outside the state would come to Hollywood and craft a new persona while leaving who they were and where they came from behind, in order to be a “star”. Most all of them did whatever they could to get even the slightest bit of recognition. Even if it came to playing the game of providing personal “pleasures” to those who might elevate their public profile. Both sides are used, but only one side benefited. It was rarely any of those who offered themselves to the wolves.
They were merely devoured, then discarded. In Hollywood, there’s plenty of meat provided....

I'm an actor, and this pretty much sums up most actors I know. A big pretend game that people put on so they can get in the spotlight. What Rogan says is true for sure.
I pride myself on just being me and not conforming to what that expectation is, but, I also know that by doing that, the fact of the matter is I won't work as much because of it.
Take for example the current political situation, and the racial issues and gun control and gender issues, lgbtq and all of that (the list goes on). If as an actor you don't agree with the majority of the industry on issues like these, especially if you're vocal about it, you're basically fucked. You won't work, it's that simple. The entertainment industry has a ton of people in positions of power that, although they may be good creatively at their job, they're ill-informed about a lot of issues. Views shouldn't play into how a person gets hired for the most part, but if you don't 'play the part' and conform to these people, and post on social media the same things they do, you won't work as much, or maybe at all. If someone is casting a project and they look you up and say, "well, he's talented but.. he's a conservative.." you're pretty much done. Maybe not every time, but 8 or 9/10 times, that's it.
I make a living solely as an actor. I've done some tv, indie films, and I do a ton of voice work. I still have a good amount of down time, but I don't think in my case it's due to my views, because I dont post my views on social media, ever. I just post my work, that's it. And I think it behooves everyone to do the same, unless you're genuinely donating time/ money to a good cause. Other than that, if you have differing views from most others in your field, best to not ruffle feathers. If you want food on your table, in other words, pretend to be the status quo. You've got to play that card if you want to survive.
The greatest role you will ever play is convincing the world you don't exist. You have to play someone else just to get in the door..

My interest in acting came from making short films and having an upbringing of going to the cinema regularly. I can’t stand a lot of actor groups, as they are all almost the same in their mannerisms and opinions And I really do not want to be famous unlike most. I like acting because I love film and filmmaking and for me the passions go hand in hand.

I understand what you’re saying, but you’re being reductionist. Stories are the way we structure our lives, whether we are conscious of this or not. In their acting, actors embody not just examples of possible stories, but examples of templates for navigating life. Whether they do it well is another matter altogether. It’s important to recognize that people don’t praise actors because people are stupid, foolish, or whatnot. Rather, people do this because stories are a fundamental human need, and when an actor does it well, people are moved by it.

Well.. You could say the same for people that kicks a ball around. Thing is that this is a business and actors/sports people are a part of that business. They will do the Jobs that pays them most. Johnny depp created sparrow so that's why he gets like 50m for each movie.
Singers are a product of the label they are signed for and is part of the business. So think about, actors, musicans and sport people as product for a business it makes more sense. Like how much money doesn't musk put into his products, same thing

I simultaneously LOVED being an actor (not 'Hollywood', mind you), but absolutely HATED all the phonies and narcissist pricks (both male and female).
There's WAY too much else in the world to involve oneself in. Acting is a subset of the greater good: STORYTELLING and education via storytelling.
For me, it *never* had to do with it being ABOUT me,
no. It was about making people laugh, cry, THINK, and learn something new. Walk away with something they'll remember. Treat people better, I'm hoping.
That way-of-thinking bankrupts my credits in 'Hollywood'. 💪😎🤟
