This video discusses who owns the ever-warming Arctic Ocean, which surrounds the North Pole of Earth. Find out how as the Arctic melts, it opens up new possibilities for fishing, drilling and shipping. But who owns the Arctic? And who gets access to these resources?
Discover how Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) dictate the delegation of natural resources in the Arctic Ocean, and how the United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea (UNCLOS) can create more disputes than answers when countries have overlapping territorial claims in the Arctic Circle.
Continental shelf claims in the Arctic Ocean also bring a new layer of complexity to territorial disputes.

It's already happening. Russia is aggressively building bases in far northern Siberia and even on arctic islands in a bid to cement it's claim over it's portion of the arctic. Canada sadly has not really been doing that other than launching a pair of special "arctic support ships" called the Dewolf class. Even the US has a stronger arctic presence than Canada does now.

Russis's coast line is 53% of the full arctic, they also got 2 million people living in the area, what other country got more than 50 000 people, none. 200 nautical miles is the rule and the shelf is definitely the rule. However, when you have USA involved, it always end up stinking. One smart rule, stay away from Russia.

I'm Canadian, and wish we had the strongest claim.
      But...
Russia has more arctic coastline, a larger arctic continental shelf, a higher arctic population and a more active presence in the arctic.
Based on the small amount of international law and customs that I know, Russia has the most legitimate claim to a near majority of the arctic, with the remainder being spilt between the numerous other claims.
      IMO.

The only countries which have any claim to the Arctic are those with actual borders on the arctic. China, as a result, has no arctic claim at all. The rest have their standard 12 mile zone and their 200 mile EEZs. No one owns the North Pole. The ridge claimed as part of its continental shelf by Russia also extends to Canada's continental shelf as well. So, neither country can claim the North Pole as its own. As for Antarctica, it is best for all nations to agree to leave Antarctica alone or at least as completely neutral territory with no owners. Certain things are best left devoid of human territorial claims.

@@petarstefanovic9965 No one is going to "give" Russia the entire arctic circle because they planted a tiny flag. That's a bit absurd, and clearly not how international politics works. Russia has been severely weakened, and are not in the right condition to enforce such a ridiculous claim. I agree with your comment on a pie method division, assuming it is roughly proportionate to current extended nautical territory. China is in far better fiscal shape than Russia, however they can't self-sustain on resources in the case of wide, western/international sanctions (Russia certainly can, and are), a large portion of their population would starve to death. When I mentioned tolls, I was referring to the Northwest Passage, which is within Canadian territory/international waters (dependant upon viewpoint).

The US wouldn't need to renounce any of their claims, they only have to decide to call the Northwest Passage either Canadian or Arctic Council waters (the US, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland - note the deliberate absence of Russia, since they have their own alternative and obviously can't be trusted). Polls could be fairly assessed and collected (with AC members paying either reduced or no fees at all), with military bases, scientific/research stations, and resource extraction facilities built by AC members.

Makes you wonder if they are chemtrailing for this reason along with other reasons for warming up that region to melt the ice to operate ships through the arctic ocean. As another way to get to natural resources gold and other hidden artifacts. I watched to commercial airplanes fly side-by-side when was controlling and the other wasn't that a high altitude. And i went through Google and TH-cam and watched other videos understand contrails are very short vs. Chemtrails that are very long lines because I was confused about it.

It would be very easy and relatively/comparatively inexpensive for the US (obviously a country with a large military would be required) and Canada to block access to the Northwest Passage (it's mostly Canadian/international waters). Tolls could be charged by the US and Canada to recoup costs for patrolling the waterway, with reduced or a complete lack of fees for other Arctic Council members (particularly if they assist in patrolling), Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. Russia has their own route that they'll love to share with China. China obviously has no claim whatsoever on arctic territory.
