Some squid that bought a 1000cc for his first bike, on his first group ride, went straight off a corner right behind me, ended up 200ft in a field 5ft away from a canal. That ruined it. Another time, some other squid (the only other rider behind me i always stay in the back but somehow he dropped behind me) thought it would be cool to pass me on the right when I wasn’t looking at 100mph, mind you, I was already riding the right white line… smh 🤦♂️. He came within an inch of hitting me.
I love riding alone. It's nice to see other groups at a plaza or gas station or at a car/ bike meet . Show some love look at the cool cars and bikes but I'm leaving the same way I came. ALONE . I use it as therapy. When I was young I didn't mind riding 50+ deep but now i just want to ride and self reflect on life, enjoy the scenery of a new area or a go on road trip . Things of that nature . If you enjoy riding with others by all means do you. Some of us ride because we love to ride alone or in a group it doesn't matter . Just love riding.
Amen. I've lived in South Jersey for the better part of 40+ years, but I don't think I've explored even 1/10th as much as I have since I got my first cruiser back in September. There are days where I just pick a road I've passed I don't know how many times....and just ride down it. No destination, no plan....I just ride for maybe an hour, see where I end up, unless I find something I wanna stop and check out first.
With 60 years of riding experience I rarely do group rides, especially while touring. I want to do what I want, when I want, and at my speed. Just one example of group ride frustration: It’s blazing hot. Gas stop. All the riders are on their bikes and some dude decides he needs to go to the bathroom. Sweat for ten minutes and he comes out with a candy bar and a coke which he absolutely has to finish before taking off. Multiply that by 20 other similar scenarios and you get the idea. Nope. No way. Not doing it! 78 years old, riding a BMW r1200r, a 650 V-Storm, and a Ural cT sidecar.
I have NOWHERE NEAR the experience that you do: 49 and started on a C50T this past September...but i don't entirely get the appeal of a group ride. I did a charity ride in October, and while it was nice, I got way more outta going from South Jersey, up to Leola, PA or Princeton on my own. I picked my own way, saw phenomenal sights, and was way less stressed than when I rode with 200+ others, even without stops
Any group ride with more than four: the danger increases with each addition. I started riding in 1979. Motorcyclists... as opposed to people who ride bikes... show their respect for each other by being ready, not causing delays, and not riding like an idiot.
I went for a ride with a buddy who had just gotten a 883. He decided the morning of the ride to adjust his primary chain tension. It was spot on. He adjusted it again. Still spot on. Asked me to adjust it. Spot on again. He tried to adjust again. Now it's way off. Adjusted it again. Spot on. Didn't believe it. I finally lost it after two hours "RIDE THE FUCKING BIKE!". Ride a few blocks. He needs gas. We ride for an hour, and it started sprinkling. Now he's riding at 45 mph in a 55 zone where people go 65-70. I generally hate group rides. My other riding buddy and I have a gassing strategy. One guy pays for both bikes, alternate. Speeds up the process.
Thank you for this! When I was a Rider Coach, after the official class was completed, this is one of the topics we would chat about. Come ready to ride!
I was on a Royal Enfield Demo Day ride when a new rider ran wide in a turn on a Hunter 350. Somehow ran through a hundred feet of grass before bringing it back on the road. Thankful he didn't go down, but we made sure to keep an eye on him the rest of the day. 🤣
Went on a group ride in mid November in michigan last season, before it started snowing, and people showed up in just a sweatshirt and jeans, then had the audacity to make us stop because they were cold. Like yeah, bud. It's cold out. Everyone already knew that
On the 1st point, we usually make our 'meet-up' spot the service station, so all of those things can be sorted & dealt with by anyone/everyone at the same time if need be.
Not really a group ride, but I went on a driver training course yesterday. One dude had a bike from the 80s that kept stalling & had to be roll started (we didn't get far before the instructor had to ask him to sort his bike out & book another day). One guy had a puncture, so we had to stop at the gas station to repair & pump up the tyre. There was also a 17yo who turned up with a broken helmet & scared the instructor multiple times, driving at 100% of his ability & running wide in the corners.
I went to the Hawthorne ride to live class, had a good time all day, but then on the final "track" portion, while doing the warm up lap this dood on a zooted Harley Bagger went hella wide and crashed breaking his leg, thereby ending the class an hour early for everyone.... so much for being an "Advanced rider...."
@irishtrash5 Okay....so these horror stories ARE common. 🙂 I did my MSF course in August of last year. Had a guy in my class who's been to Daytona, Sturgis, ToTD, everywhere. He's got ten bikes, and is buying his eleventh when the season starts again....and he was there for his MSF cert too. He was a decent rider, but he was proudly showing off his road-rash and scars like they were badges of honor.

Stopped doing group rides over 10 years ago. Mixed skill levels, one upmanship, high testosterone, and worse of all “red mist”. Seen a lot of carnage. Also cops in the UK position themselves on country roads with long straights to bag a lot of speeders. If I’m riding and see the “pack” moving along behind me I move out the way to let the “squids” come past. One cleared I up my speed and enjoy myself. No more group rides unless I get a Harley or a GS.
If have a Back Pack and you take it off. Make sure you strap it down tighter than your play toys before doing any squiding. Because we are not going to run up and down 4 miles of road looking for it in the rain.
If I’m on a group ride it’s always with people I know, and I’m the over prepared ADV guy… because there’s always the under prepared guy that will end up needing something you brought, even if it’s just pair of warmer gloves.
We has someone join us for a group ride that was hungry for go pro footage. Rev bombing and riding erratically, starting drama with cars for no reason. Me and the homie turned around as he tried doing a “pull” and left him
We **plan** our group rides to include both drink stops as well as a pub lunch stop (with beers) usually about half way around the planned route. No excuses for going hungry or thirsty with a little planning. 👍🏼
We will speed along open back roads, there usually no one else there but us, maybe some other riders also enjoying a day out. But we never do dumb stuff in town areas, we don't want the wrong attention, we just wanna enjoy our day out. 👍🏼
Met up for a group ride once at a gas station , You think every body would have gassed up, Nope 20 mins in the leader needed to get gas, At that point to me it was nope, and kept riding , I didn't trust that person to lead , Met the group later on at the half way point for lunch, but again rode my ride, alone... and still had a good time.

I do ride in group and alone tho! I’m an infiltrated Ducati guy on a bunch of Harley guys group but tbh they take care of me as if I was one of “them” and I hold my throttle most of the time but they all are hella good riders that used to ride sport bikes back in the day (im 22 and they’re 40+)
I’ll do small group rides with guys I know for charity runs but that’s it. In general group rides, some riders get too cocky and ride like douche bags. Makes it unsafe and perpetuates the stereotype of riders are the same, A-holes.

Number 1 Way To Make Group Ride Better: bring your straight piped grom and redline it the whole group ride
With 60 years of riding experience I rarely do group rides, especially while touring. I want to do what I want, when I want, and at my speed. Ew, group rides.
I cant thinknof anything worse
Is it really that bad? I always ride alone, and the most number of bikes I rode with is 3 others, they were my office mates and it was fun.

You have to say "Hey, look cows" when you see cows. It's in the riders code.
