Thanks for this. I saw this coming in for landing and couldn't look intently at it as I was working on surviving the Deerfoot 500. Super cool that you got it for us. Thanks Alex!!
They have a very distinctive noise when they fly over - a drone that lingers. On one occasion flying over Manchester UK the emergency services received calls reporting a strange vibration - it was an AN12 climbing out of Birmingham. Great livery on this one - thanks for sharing
I had 4 of these big guys over my area they are pretty loud, I got 53 dB from 8 km to 45 dB at 16 km from them and they play a similar role to our western C-130.
There's one of these that occasionally flies over my house on a route from Montreal to somewhere down south, and it'll be at 20,000ft and will still be loud enough to convince me that it was at 2,000ft. I love it.
A couple of weeks ago we had one of these fly over our house from Montreal to I think it was Arizona somewhere. I thought it was a Dash-8 flying really low on take off from Ottawa, but couldn't see anything until I looked it up on Flight Aware. I couldn't believe how loud it was, even though it was at 20,000 feet.
I have had one of these pass over my house in Georgia the past two nights going from Miami to Toledo. Each one of them was flying at 23,000 ft and I could hear them inside the house.
a few of these have been flying over my house latily in berkeley ca,but thanks to the weather can only hear them, yesterday one flew over oakland to calgary
I don’t know if you caught it but the Il-76 paid a visit to Calgary today. The flight was cancelled originally, but it’s been here since 7 AM this morning. I went out to see it myself on a very tight schedule and caught some very nice pictures, and hopefully you get the chance to see it departing.
Yes, it wasn’t smoking like that during landing or taxi, so it might have a water injection system to give the turbines more power on take off. The early jets you mentioned smoked like that because they used water injection on take off.
Nice catch, Alex. I guess those AN's come with the optional "mixture-rich" lever by the throttles. Interesting too that they retain the nose glass and "chin guns" lower nose blister - I wonder if the latter might add a bit of drag? The UKL paint scheme reminds me of the old Ward Air colours that we used to see on some WA aircraft including Max's personal Twin Otter. Thanks & Merry Christmas.
I watched this one land from my room yesterday. I would have gone to see it land myself but unfortunately my family was busy doing other things. The flight schedule on Flightradar24 said a Volga-Dnepr Ilyushin Il-76 was coming to land here at YYC, but the flight got cancelled. I honestly wasn’t surprised that you caught this one, as it isn’t common to get An-12s here at daytime. Nice video!
In comparison to them this is a pretty new aircraft. According to the aircraft data this specific plane was delivered in February 1981 to Aeroflot, so it is now 40 years old. It is operating since 2004 for Ukraine Air Alliance.
@@1950dcs Yes, indeed, thank you for the information - I used another website who was obviously wrong - the AN-12 was in production between 1957 and 1972 - so the youngest existing aircrafts of this type MUST be at least 49 years old.
Actually seen one a week or two ago over Abbotsford,, at altitude but definitely not sounding like a C-130,, so I got on flightradar24 ,and sure enough , pretty cool
It was a very common aircraft in the Sovietunion, produced by Antonov from 1957 onwards in round about 1250 units. A little bit more than 100 are still in the air. This specific one is a AN-12BP, i.e. a version with additional fuel tanks for longer ranges. Therefore it can perform a route like Calgary - St. John´s.
Surprised they are allowed to fly in our airspace. AN-12's are banned from several countries airspaces around the global, due to poor safety records and environmental concerns.
What a beautifully-ugly airplane! Hard not to appreciate how overbuilt these Soviet-era machines are. You can tell they're heavy, but they carry that weight well.
Probably water injection into the turbines. Western Aircrafts of this generation like the DC-8, B 707 or Convair 880 used the same engine technology to create more thrust especially during take-off.

it's a great livery, but personally i am a bigger fan of the "hot rod/wasp" orange/black livery Cavok Air uses
@@cauwama it is the Covik Air one I have seen close up. Agree it is striking
What a catch, such a cool visitor to see. Love this smoking classic!

@@joshsannar5402 Pretty much the exact experience I had too lol
@@joshsannar5402 wish I had caught that flying over Ottawa.
Beautiful photography, as usual, Alex. I especially liked the reflections of the sun on the props before it lined up to take off. Very artistic!
A beautiful aircraft and love the colors.

Brilliant video mate!! Great looking and sounding AN12!
Fantastic as always Alex
Nice looking aircraft!!
Thank You! To Cool!
Alex's video of the year 2021
Congratulations 🎊 🥳🥸
She’s just after leaving St. John’s almost an hour ago to Lviv in Ukraine, could be flying over Ireland in the morning
Absolutely beautiful!
Awesome looking plane! Those high wing quad props like this and the C130 are gloriously clumsy looking and I’m here for it!
Excellent shots as always!
Ahhh! Finally found your video!, they came to SFS, AND I helped them out!
Awesome catch!

Fantastic capturing ❤❤
Wow great footage awesome seeing it first time I’ve seen one
Great video, thanks.
Thanks Alex. I saw the flight from Airdrie. I’m super happy you caught it close for us
Awesome video with great sounds, thanks (I am huge HS748 fan, so this was double the fun due to similar engine sound IMHO :D)
Really awesome! I kinda feel it looks a bit like a Dash 7 because of its 4 engines, but much larger and heavier.
Yes, indeed.
All of that smoke on takeoff at the end of the video reminds me of the Convair 880 or the early generation 707 or DC8.

what is the cargo onboard?
@@chewypilot484 What, on the Il-76 or the An-12?
What a catch❤
I was able to catch this at HNL same Registration too
I like these old Antonovs, smoke and all. We get one over here (SE England) now and then. Obviously built to last: many are close to 60 years old.

This thing looks like a Hercules and a Connie had a baby.
:-)
Nice!
Good looking plane. Except flying from Oakland to Calgary in a prop would be a long flight!
I was in Hawaii and saw this plane on Flightradar24 heading to some island in the southern pacific.
Wow!!! Indeed a rare visitor in Canada. They´re probably performing charter flights - why else would an Ukraine Air Alliance AN-12 operate in Canada?
Alex: Thanks another excellent catch she's a loud one.
Holy smokes!
Wow 👀
Given current tensions in the Ukraine, we might reasonably speculate this aircraft is transporting military equipment of some kind.
What is the mission for this aircraft on this across North America trip?
Support for Ukraine probably
Love the glass nose. The RCAF Argus is the only western aircraft I can think of that had one.
Thing just flew over my house 5 minutes ago, was real loud and had to check FR24 to see what it was
Beauty Eh !!
Was that the customs officer in a Santa hat?
I think more the dispatcher.
Rare old and cool
(fun fact) yesterday i saw a an 12 flying over me and it was this one
Almost thought this was beamng
Saw this take off yesterday and wondered WTF is that?
Strange looking bird.
Sounds from childhood.
Nice Russian catch. Like the sound of propeller 👍✅
Obviously had the DPF's removed 🙄
Old mate at 3.14 with the Santa hat on.......
