JUSTIN, YOU HAVE TO REACT TO HER PEACE PRICE LIVE PERFORMANCE OF " RUNAWAY " It's incredible. Also English is her second language she's originally from Norway.
I discovered Aurora earlier this year and fell completely in love with her music and personality. She’s become easily my favourite contemporary artist; I love her as much as I love Kate Bush, wish I never thought I’d ever say. I even made the decision to fly out to see her headline at Oya Festival in Oslo in August, my first ever concert overseas. It was unbelievable, the best gig I’ve ever been to in over 40 years of gig-going, which I really didn’t expect. I’m flying to Oslo this month to see her again. Can’t wait. She’s the most wonderful person too, funny, wise, caring and a little strange in the best possible way; I’d urge anyone to check her out. Love that you enjoyed her performance, this is one of the 2 performances that really converted me.
When this came out, this performance recharged my belief in new music after a brief spell of 'slight apathy' towards new artists... I remember feeling like I could literally feel her energy and brilliance through the sound and vision, almost like I was there... What an incredible artist and human she seems to be!
Thank you for covering this. I'd never heard of her until this video and have spent the time since listening to her discography and I'm absolutely enamoured. On the hunt for vinyls now so my bank account is going to take a kicking, but it'll be worth it. Thanks again mate, keep up the great work.
Yay, Aurora! I discovered her a year or two ago. Such a stunning voice and just seems like such a lovely and magical person - she honestly delights me and gives me faith in modern music.
Further to my comment from a month ago about seeing her at Oya, saw her two nights running in Oslo in November and she was indeed incredible yet again. And I got to meet her too! She was utterly lovely. 😊
She's an incredible talent and has a great personality too. I found her through her doing some collabs with Wardruna, which you should also check out "Wardruna and Aurora - Helvegen (Live)"
Seeing Aurora live is incredible, literally next to Sigur Ros by just how blown away I was. You stand there, eyes wide open and just live in the moment.
That's good to know. I'm seeing her next year. Bought my friends and wife all tickets so I won't be the only 40+ one there. Everyone is a bit skeptical, but I've guaranteed them it'll be one of the best concerts they have been too. I just get that sense because she is a pure musician and her concerts will reflect that I'm sure.
@@michaelstevenson2517 I’m in my late ‘50s and every time I’ve seen her there have been people as old as or older than me. Have now seen her 3 times and she’s been amazing every time.
Well said, Danny! I down with prolific, lovable weirdos! Every time I see Icelandic musicians, I'm reminded of that movie "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga." I love musicians from around the world.
@@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain Btw, Justin, speaking of Eurovision in my comment above . . . have you ever considered returning as a solo act, collab, or with your band to compete in the Eurovision contest like you did once upon a time in Helsinki, Finland? The more I think of the idea, the more I hope you'll do it! I would love to see you return. I've followed Eurovision for many, many years despite many Americans not being aware of it's existence. My personal favorite performance is when a transgender singer from Israel named Dana International won in 1998 for her song Diva. That was a very important moment in Eurovision history, music history, and for LGBTQ+ representation on a global stage. She still has a very successful career in Israel. Actually, this could be a great JHRA episode topic where you discuss the significance of Eurovision, it's defining moments, and to share your personal memories and experiences as a musician who once participated (and hopefully will consider doing so again! 😉😬🙏🏻).
Her dance at the end of Daydreamer on the first of the November gigs I went to completely entranced me. I was utterly lost in it. Seeing her close up (I was 2nd row from the front) I’ve never seen anyone - even professional dancers - look so joyous, elegant and utterly free. It really was A Moment.
I’m glad to hear that. She’s also helped me immeasurably with my health problems this year. Without her I really don’t know where I’d be. Thankfully I got to tell her when I met her.
I happened to catch the performance live as KEXP streamed it, I was completely taken by her and followed her music since. Sadly though all her music is so over produced now, it just feels completely detached from this iconic grounded performance.
@@robbiepoohify I’ve seen countless live performances online and in person of vocalists sounding incredible compared to the almost soulless, basic as hell, reeled in songs released on the albums. What the hell are these studios doing? Aren’t producers, mixers, engineers etc supposed to make a performer sound their best? It’s just gotten ridiculous and they ruin the music. I just don’t understand it.
@@phoenixgirl70 I found the same with Aurora, I found her really charming at first and love her voice, but the charm is gone. It's happening with so many different genres, I describe it as them flattening the music. Rock is the most affected I think, all the soul is being stripped from it. Smashing Pumpkins is a current example for me, I've been listening to the new tracks from ATUM, invariably the studio version is awfully flat and kind of hard to listen to TBH, but the live performances of those same tracks are absolute bangers. It's just become mass production. I think modern technology has been the death of soul in music. It's get it out - run that filter over it instead of questioning and coaching so the company can get paid.
@@deViIle Flattening the music is a great description! I found it hard to describe but you did it perfectly. It’s horrible because music is and has been one of my greatest joys my entire life. I remember watching the Canadian Olympic closing ceremonies and Avril Lavigne performed and when I heard her live I was just shocked how amazing she sounded. I wasn’t and am not a fan of her music but I understood her talent. I’m one of the olds, so her pop punk thing didn’t do it for me as having been a teen in the 80’s and hearing IMO so much better. I’ll have to check out the Pumpkins as they were once one of my favorite bands. But man I hate auto tune and I kinda think with all modern tech there’s a high point and then the farther they go it’s a disaster. Thanks for your comment and I’ll check out the live SP footage!
Aurora is this otherwordly creature who came to Earth to share love and heal with her voice. I think I've seen all her concerts and interviews until last year, when you get hooked up you can't get enough - such a delight, bith to listen and to watch. Every single time! The only contemporary artist that got my attention.
She stated in several interviews following her debut and second albums that she might quit music to go and do something else, Yoko Kanno style, then she puts out songs like That?! Incredible just to think what may come later.
One of the best performances on KEXP, also some phenomenal sound engineering from them as always - overjoyed that your producer pointed you in Aurora's direction!
Wow the last two episodes I’ve been introduced into two great acts I’d probably never learn of otherwise. I love this channel so much! Humour, history, and great new (to me) bands/singers! I’m still catching up on missed episodes and was wondering if you still do the Top 5 countdown? Oh my god so entertaining! Thanks Justin for giving me a little bit of joy everyday!
Thank you Justin and his team for sharing this beautiful artist with us. I love finding emotionally affecting music (happy / sad / energising / whatever) and after a particularly rough few days in my life, this has really brought me some joy. I’ve just bought her latest album on cassette and am watching a vid of her covering Massive Attack as I write this. Great stuff. Thank you
Aurora is an incredible musician and a lovely person. I think the song that made me truly fall in love with her music was Exist For Love, which was probably the most beautiful love song I had ever heard.
I saw Aurora a few years ago when she opened for Wardruna (another group you should have a look at!), and she was entrancing, strange, and extraordinary.
Wow JUSTIN....I love my rocknroll and metal and I am darkness fan (well like few songs) BUT even I have heard of Aurora. Such a beautiful and unique voice.
Glad to see you enjoying Auroras music, one of my favourite artists. I'd recommend anybody to check her out live regardless of their music taste, since her shows are always amazing. She's also a lovely and entrancing person
I’m so glad you liked Aurora Justin and apologies for spamming with comments, I’ve been suggesting her for ages and I’m very glad your producer suggested her to you so give them a thumbs up from me 😁
I met Aurora in 2015 at a gig in London and she was so nice. That was just before the release of her first album! So happy shes doing bigger better things now
I'm almost scared to watch this....lol Though the title of this video makes me far less worried.... I'm a huge fan of this channel....love what you're doing Justin. But....I'm also a huge HUGE fan of Aurora. She's hands down one of my favorite artists and human beings of all time. So....I just hope you like this brief window into what she's all about. There's SO much more to dive into beyond this one song/performance. But I love that you're doing this at all. :) And thank god you didn't react to Runaway. That song is....ok. But her stuff after that is so much more musically interesting and emotionally cathartic. Runaway gets far too much love....and even Aurora herself seems a bit over the hype for that one song.
Aurora's talent shines as bright as the northern lights for which she is named. She is always supported by brilliant musicians. Aurora also has an amazing personality, she is intelligent, very wise for one so young, a little risque at times, genuine, very funny and quirky. Yes Justin, she does mean graveyard. The song is about extreme bullying. Aurora writes brilliantly on a range of sensitive topics - "Winter Bird" and "Lucky" about depression, "It Happened Quiet" about violence in relationships, "5, 4, 3, 2,1" about mercy killing, "The River" about dealing with emotions (inspired when Aurora read an article about how much higher male suicide numbers are than female)," Cure For Me" about it being fine to be different and many more. She also has done an exceptional job at covering an eclectic range of the works of other artists (The Beatles, Oasis, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Nat King Cole). You should look more deeply into her work, especially the artistically perfect Nidarosdomen (Trondheim Cathedral) concert from 2017 and the magical HAIK concert of 2019 (filmed in the forest where Aurora played in her childhood). Aurora either begins a performance without her shoes or takes then off at some point, as well as her socks. In one performance, she took her socks off complaining about the negative impact they have on her small feet. She then threw them away with an emphatic "Fuck you socks!".
She is so special and great. I think appreciation rises if you also check out interviews and her little production videos. Such an interesting character.
The Norwegian alt-pop scene (Highasakite, Susanne Sundfør etc) is quite good, and she came from a community that Sigrid came from. She won the Mercury award in 2018 i believe? Many who have seen and met Aurora consider her kind of whimsical and pixie-like. She is among the sweetest persons ever and "must be protected at all cost" (got the 5th element reference?). It has something to do with her light autism. I kind of recognise it since i'm ADD/Asperger. The back-up singer is named Silja Sol, and when she joined the band she was a singer/songwriter mainly singing in her native language; Want to check her out? Semmenemme, Ni liv and Dyrene are worth checking out. If in doubt how to pronounce Reykjavik? Say: Rei-kia-week. Funfact about this performance: Björk attended the concert, and has been confirmed by KEXP that she was in the crowd, so quite possibly a fan of Aurora.
Firstly I horta say I love your video's. I really love the informal music theory you impart. I noticed straight away the bassist was playing a fender 6. I recently bought myself one (whilst I was having treatment at the Christie, but that's another story I won't get into here). Aurora is an amazing vocalist. She's not only singing in English but also in Norwegian!! I'm working my way through all the vids on your channel and it's helping me through the ups and downs of chemo. Thank you for that dude.
Holy shit! I don't want to undermine her performance but...... Just look at her! She's fucking gorgeous! She could be an inhabitant of rivendel! By the power of greyskull as they sai!
I was reading this comment at the exact same time as the same thought popped into my head! Great minds. To be honest though, every song Justin attempts to sing on this channel, I feel like I would love to hear him sing it all the way through. What a voice!
Dude, So glad you're back (in my life) One of my fav videos to watch still is an obscure recording of a thing called love improvisation on some italian radio where you play on an electric toy guitar. Just can't beat it when it's real >< You don't know how many times you made my day. I immediately subscribed as soon as I found this channel
My fav aurora song is Runaway and when looking for acoustic versions which is my side hobby it was the only song so far to have ONLY awesome versions one after the other more epic than the other (does that even make sense) Greets from Holland >
Ps. Not like anyone noticed but YT took the views off the playlists, Could you put a hearty word in there for me ? Some of my playlists date back over a decade and had over 30K views so that's just not cool. (How will I ever prove anything to my grand children now ?) I see this TikTokification happening with weary eyes
Bowie wrote a great song but not everybody can capture the essence of the song, make it their own without ruining it. Aurora really did a good job. And yes, life is better without shoes.
y e s it is! I've watched it over and over again, just to watch and hear CHURCH YARD ~ she is one of few artists who sounds so much better live, and a truly unique artist. she is brilliant.
Yes that song at the peace price concert took me in and the seed.... But I stumbeled on Justins chanel today and I thought I heared Freddie mercury in a few songs, you're great!
That exact same performance was also my own very first AURORA experience, pretty much exactly 3 years ago now! 😁👍 By the way, I think it's actually the guy with the Fender Bass VI who's playing the 16th notes, not an arpeggiated synth 😊
It's her own emotional language. She's used it in a few songs. Also she does mean graveyard. Churchyard is just a more literal translation of the norwegian name. She either didn't realise or just liked her translation better.
I discovered her only a month ago when she randomly popped up on my homepage and I felt compelled to click on the video. She has an amazing voice and is very unique. It's hard to say that someone is unique these days.
Thoroughly enjoyed this! Great pick by The Prroducerrr & witty commentary by Justin as always! That synth impression & 'grounded' bits had me cackling like an idiot. Does anyone else hear Noel Fielding in his 'f off' voice? Also, KEXP consistently features artists of this caliber. It's worth subbing to their channel if you're not already. Perfect format & excellent source for finding new music!
I found Aurora this year too. I played this same KEXP set on repeat for a month and dreamed that she and I live in a castle. In the grounds were unicorns and gryphons that were named after the scandinavian sounds in this video.
PLEASE react to "It Happened Quiet" live at the Current by Aurora. It's one of the most powerful acoustic performances ever in human history. the way that she conveys emotion is unparalleled. Chills will go down your spine, no question about it! here -> th-cam.com/video/9U-N6LqzdIM/w-d-xo.html
she is the most expressive singer alive. every time she sings a song, she lives it like it is unfolding right before her eyes for the first time. so expressive, so intentional in every note, so powerful.
This was great. You have to check out her performance at Nidarosdomen Cathedral. Listening to "Through The Eyes of A Child" and "Lucky" is always such a roller coaster of emotions. Outstanding live orchestra and choir as well.
Tnx for playing one of Norways greatest artists (in my opinion). I remember a time when we (-living in Norway), used to say that "it's ok.... -it's Norwegian". Then A-ha happened... A few years went by then Røyksopp released Eple. Off it went with Norwegian music. 💥Thank you, Justin. 🤗

Hahaha “fuck you socks!” I just adore her
Her cover of Bowie’s Is There Life on Mars is really wonderful. (And it’s not often I like covers of Bowie’s songs.)
She is so special and great. I think appreciation rises if you also check out interviews and her little production videos. Such an interesting character.
Yes, the interviews absolutely made me fall in love with her all the more. Such a wonderful, warm, funny, wise, thoughtful person.
She is The Artist of this era.
Just imagine: Björk and Aurora collab?!
I like Suzanne Sundfor too ❤️
My favorite performance by her. Incredible energy and lyrics.
Auroras Murder Song is absolutely beautiful, its a song that i would happily die to when im old and at the end of my days.
That was simply beautiful lovely
Aurora also is the beautiful "Ah Aaaah" voice from the first Frozen movie.
I would love to see Justin perform a cover of Chris Isaac's Wicked Game or Scatman.
I will be looking for a Darkness Covers album with both tracks on it.
I was reading this comment at the exact same time as the same thought popped into my head! Great minds. To be honest though, every song Justin attempts to sing on this channel, I feel like I would love to hear him sing it all the way through. What a voice!
@@jsp2866 totally agree I sung Abbas one of us, on one of his live streams and just 👌🏻*chefs kiss*
4:20 made me crack up….what a spot on synth description hahaha
The fact you wear Grados shows you are truly a man of taste.
Aurora also does a stellar cover of Massive Attacks "Teardrop".
I was going to say there's a touch of Liz Fraser in her voice.
Her cover of Across the Universe by the Beatles is utterly stunning
I love the song "Teardrop" I will have to look for Aurora's cover now. 😀
She's amazing.
Thank you to people in the comments who recommended her cover of Life on Mars. Incredible! 😍🎶
Bowie wrote a great song but not everybody can capture the essence of the song, make it their own without ruining it. Aurora really did a good job.
And yes, life is better without shoes.
This is the performance that got me in to Aurora. She is amazing.
y e s it is! I've watched it over and over again, just to watch and hear CHURCH YARD ~ she is one of few artists who sounds so much better live, and a truly unique artist. she is brilliant.
For me Aurora really shines in her ballads. Check out here performance of Murder Song at the 2015 Noble Peace Prize Concert!
Here is the link. VERY POWERFUL th-cam.com/video/vh0SWTVwXxw/w-d-xo.html
Not heard of her before, bit unusual so intrigued to take a look. Thanks
It's her own emotional language. She's used it in a few songs. Also she does mean graveyard. Churchyard is just a more literal translation of the norwegian name. She either didn't realise or just liked her translation better.
She's incredible tbh. Great texture
All her pop covers are sick too
I discovered her only a month ago when she randomly popped up on my homepage and I felt compelled to click on the video.
Good on Justin for.recognizing siljas brilliant backup skills, nice sir.
PLEASE react to "It Happened Quiet" live at the Current by Aurora. It's one of the most powerful acoustic performances ever in human history. the way that she conveys emotion is unparalleled. Chills will go down your spine, no question about it!
here -> th-cam.com/video/9U-N6LqzdIM/w-d-xo.html
she is the most expressive singer alive. every time she sings a song, she lives it like it is unfolding right before her eyes for the first time. so expressive, so intentional in every note, so powerful.
YES PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
also acoustic forgotten love! th-cam.com/video/82jTvFQV4NU/w-d-xo.html
Aurora is easily one of the best current artists. So fucking cool
Aurora is an amazing singer. She really seems genuine and REAL. i like her
Thanks for covering Aurora--love her. She does a great cover of Ariana Grande's God Is A Woman. I like it better than the original
I like it WAY better than the original!
encapsulation every time i watch her music, cheers
One of my favorite performances from her!!
LOVE HER
You had me at Aurora and KEXP 😊
We first became aware of her voice on the Frozen II soundtrack, the kids love her voice 😊
