The crew + government told the students to stay onboard even if the crew themselves were abandoning the ship. This became a national tragedy. The music video has a moment where Jimin (BTS member) is holding shoes in front of the ocean, shoes of members from the accident are placed on the harbor to honor the victims. A family wrote a letter to a victim stating “my dear, your friends bought you a beautiful pair of shoes; your mum sister and brother are all waiting for you”. A lyric in this song goes: "Passing by the edge of the cold winter, until the days of spring, until the flowers blossom, please stay, play stay there a little longer." The song is for those mourning, fighting, and lost. The album to the song is “you never walk alone” which goes hand in hand in the meaning of the song. It was leaked by Korean media that the BTS members donated to the families whose children were apart of the tragedy, as it’s customary in Korean culture to keep your donation a private matter. The song also has references to a short story “The Ones Who Walk Way from Omelas" by Ursula LeGuin. The story is about a utopia where everything is perfect and wonderful and people are happy. The place is called Omelas. A sign is seen in the music video with a neon glowing sign “OMELAS”. In order for everyone to be happy and have fun, one child needs to be kept in complete darkness and in complete misery. The members are a reflection of those abandoned and forgotten in the music video. This is one of my favorite songs and definitely one I’ve used to heal. BTS has many songs that have helped fans, even if they are in Korean I can very much understand the feel and emotions as music is universal and transcends languages. BTS is one of the biggest motivators in my life to go above and beyond, they are not just a K-Pop group and have surpassed that.
