The Meaning of Liturgy in the Catholic Church

  • What does liturgy mean in the Catholic Church?
The origin of the word liturgy is the Greek word "leitourgia," which means "work for the people." In ancient Greece, the citizens would do public service for their city. They would give back to their community. It was their duty as citizens.
    leos/laos = people, public
    ergo = to do
In the Catholic Church, we use the word liturgy to refer to the public prayers of the Church, especially the Mass. It includes the rites and rituals that we do together as a Church to worship God.
The Liturgy of the Hours, for example, is the public prayer of the Church that all religious and even laity can join in together at specific times of day.
We have come to use the word liturgy to especially refer to the Mass. Even within the Mass there are two parts that particularly bear this name: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
But let's go deeper. What is actually happening during Liturgy?
    WHO?
Liturgy is an "action" of the whole Christ (Christus totus). Those who even now celebrate it without signs are already in the heavenly liturgy, where celebration is wholly communion and feast. (CCC, 1136)
    HOW?
    Signs and Symbols
    Words and Actions
    Singing and Music
    Holy Images
    WHEN?
    The Mass
    Liturgical Year, Seasons
    Liturgy of the Hours
    WHERE?
Anywhere, but especially a church with all the signs that help elevate our minds and hearts to God.

I don't go to church but went to a Catholic school as an 8 year-old since my military dad thought it the best school in town at the time. I am "innately" liturgical because I help people constantly (it's in my DNA!), but this discussion makes me understand the meaning of "church" like never before. New follower! Thank you very much.

The Catholic Church puts heavy burdens on people like the Pharisees did in The days of Jesus. HE called them hypocrites, snakes and blind..... the pope, bishops etc. Have always seemed money, power and honour which is evident even to the spiritually blind. Read 2 Timothy 3:5 sums it all up. Pray that your eyes will be opened....seek truth through God’s word....the Bible....and not through the Catholic Church which has deceived “many”. Get into a Bible based church..... God bless.

Be very careful what you say. As a Catholic, I am very close to God. By all means you do your thing and seek God in your way, but do not cast judgement onto others along the way. God bless.

Do not be deceived no were In the bible does it say to worship Mary or saints clearly 10 commandments worship the lord you’re god and serve him only.
That’s why Jesus said unless you accept the bible like a kid who reads straight to the point instead think of his own ways of ‘god’ then you will not enter the kingdom of heaven these people have made up Mary to worship of Satan can twist little bit of the scripture he can cause everyone to go the wrong path there’s only one path guys repent and trust in god.

True! But it’s also true that you won’t find any true Catholics that worships the saints or Mary. They are special but only because of what God did through them. They are not on Gods level and we know that they are just amazing examples of what God told us to be

@@jasonfelice1800 yes exactly the bible says who died for you?Jesus is interceding for us so when they pray to Mary when the bible says clearly Jesus is the only intercessor it’s wrong you know. The bible says only God knows the mind so when they pray to Mary that’s a sign of worship also she won’t hear since only God reads the mind. Like the commandment ‘worship’ the lord you’re God and serve him ONLY. I used to be Catholic my family is Iraqi assyrian last year I had two visions of the end of the world i repented 3 month later reading the bible praying I got baptised then i when I kept reading I realised God opened my eyes to the truth and praying to mary was wrong. She said my lord and my saviour so she admited she is a sinner.

@@KingofKings11312 I am born again but I think we probably have a little different view of it. I believe I was born again of water and spirit when I was baptized and became a son of the father through the power of the holy spirt. And a good metaphor for Mary and the saints is that they are like the moon and God is the sun. They don’t shine or have power of their own they just reflect the light of God. They are just great examples of what we can be and what to strive for. And I think it’s pretty similar when people ask for others to pray for them if they are sick. It’s not that they think others have powers it’s just they are praying to God who has the power
