  • X-Types are known for their door cards breaking and rattling. This is a quick and easy way of repairing them using Polymorph plastic. Six years later in Jan 2022 the fixings are all still solid.

    My son and I changed out all front and rear speakers today on our 2004 X-Type 3.0 and used your technique on several of the mounting bases just like your issue described. This polymorph material is a game changer. Thank you so much for us to now have quiet and solid feeling door panels.

    Blimey, I think you've read my mind for future projects on my car. Your video gives me clues as to where the card fasteners are located. I need to lubricate my door handles as they are all becoming unreliable when opening the doors. It's supposed to be a common problem on X-types. Thanks for uploading this.

    Great idea to use that polymorph material, never hear of it until now. My drivers door card has been a bit loose for year and feared taking it off and not being able to fix it, so now I know the mounts on these are naff and break off easily I'll form a plan :-)

    Please remember: polymorphic plastic turns back into goo at about 150 F/65 C. You luckily shouldn't have an issue in with it in the UK, but if you're in hotter climates, the temperature inside if left in the sun can get to 130-140 F when it gets in the 90s. I would imagine the inside of the door gets as hot if not hotter.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The melting point of the granules is 65 degrees C. When the stuff has solidified into a block you need to heat it up to about 90 degrees C to soften it right through. I would have thought at that temperature all the mastics on the car would melt! If the door panels are not pulled off there is no reason for the new mounts to deform even when really hot. Even the hottest places on earth don't get above 70 degrees C and that is the surface reading - maximum air readings seldom get above 45 degrees C.

    • @Loakvo
      @Loakvo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a silver one with black interior. Left in the sun at 40 C, you cannot touch the inside door handles. you have to leave the car at least a couple of minutes to run with airon at full before you get in. i am sure it can easily reach 90 c on the top of that door card. I will try though.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will be interesting to see what happens. Perhaps you can post your findings. It seems to me that unless you try to pull off the door panels at 90 C nothing will happen.

    • @johnnysevengun

      This is a good permanent way to fix the problems. I took the panel off a few weeks ago and all the fixings were still good. In fact I broke one and simply repaired it by heating it up with a hot gun. They have lasted over 3 years now.

    • @Volgaman21
      @Volgaman21 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnnysevengun That's great, a lasting solution. I don't mind repairing something, but repairing the same part over and over again is annoying. I already ordered the polymorph plastic. As soon as I have received it, I will give it a go. Thanks for your video and so for the inspiration.

    @JoeBob79569 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Shit! My door was rattling at the top and I partly pulled back the panel this evening and found the bit of plastic that had broken off, and I superglued it. I didn't know that it's not going to stick!
    I'll be in for a disappointment in the morning when I go and check it, but at least I know now so the disappointment won't be so bad, and I can sleep on some alternate plans.
    I'm a big fan of plastic welding with a soldering iron so might give that a shot if I don't get some of this polymorph stuff on eBay.
    But I might just get some anyway, it looks like great stuff.. Thanks!
    Update:
    So superglue worked just fine for me. But I don't know how long it will last. My guess is that it will be fine until I try to disassemble the door again, and then the glue/plastic will break before the clips.
    Update 2:
    Superglue didn't last very long!
    Polymorph and a new pack of clips finally arrived from China so I went at the car today. Polymorph worked a treat but the clips were inferior quality. They just wouldn't hold, and the door card kept popping back out.
    The clips were the same size as the old ones, but it looked like the grooves weren't deep enough so I went around them with a junior hacksaw to deepen them, and then went around them with a knife to clean out the grooves, especially the two lower grooves, and then the door car stayed in afterwards.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The great thing about polymorph is that it goes solid but is still flexible. You can remelt it and use it again. So far it has lasted about five years and I have had the doors off lots of times.

    • @JoeBob79569
      @JoeBob79569 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnnysevengun Just ordered 100g there from China for about 3 quid. Grand job!
      I also have a few clips for the door on the way from China, as a few of them are broken too. I tried plastic welding little tops on to them, but the size has to be really exact and I just wasn't precise enough with them and they just broke again. But they were the lower clips so it's not too bad.
      The superglue is holding the top clip, and the door screws are holding the bottom so it'll be fine for a few weeks until the polymorph and the clips arrive.

  • @shaunsart
    @shaunsart 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I need some of this too, I have been looking on Ebay, so many different sizes of polymorph. What size would I need to do 3 clips like you have done? 50g 100g 500g packets I have seen. Cheers

    Will the polymorph not soften on a summers day as it can get beyond 65deg internally?

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had this conversation before with Mackerous Creel and I think it is very unlikely. The softer mastics would melt before the Polymorph. There's a few people in hot countries checking it out. The hottest its been in my car is 48C and the panels are still solid as the day I fixed them. I was more concerned about them shrinking in the cold but they haven't.

  • @johnblackburn7673
    @johnblackburn7673 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That stuff looks good. For the badly damaged ones did you think of weldind some new plastic in with a soldering iron. Just a thought

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have tried that before but the plastic melts and goes black and is very toxic. It is so much quicker with Polymorph and if you mess it up you can just melt it back without burning. Lasted nearly four years now.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mark J. Mantilla . After 5 weeks there's no ratting at all so I think it is pretty permanent. I built some seat mounts for my cafe racer over a year ago and they have remained solid. The best thing is that if they loosen you can just reheat them with hot water or an air gun and remould them. The doorcards are made of thermosetting plastic so you would have to literally burn them with a soldering iron to alter them, the polymorph can be handled easily.
