About Taksim Square and Istiklal Street
On Istiklal Street, the busiest street in Istanbul, you can see a flood of people, both local and foreign tourists, at any time of the day, summer or winter. It is said that more than a million people walk every day.
Istiklal Street starts from Taksim Square at its northern end and ends at Tünel Square at its southern end. From the tunnel, you can go to the famous Galipdede Street, then the famous Galata Mevlevi Lodge with its historical gate, and when you go further downhill, you can go to the famous Galata Tower.
There are many places to visit in Taksim. There are many park areas, entertainment venues, shopping malls, cafes and restaurants in Taksim. Gezi Park, Republic Monument and Istiklal Street in Taksim are among the must-see places.
Today, the street is full of buildings, mansions, passages and many foreign country consulates and embassies that are home to various brands and stand out with their historical and rich architectural structure from the 19th century. It is also lively and active 24 hours a day with numerous shops, cafes, bars, discos, clubs and restaurants.
Along Istiklal Street, you can visit popular places such as the fantastic Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, Hüseyin Ağa Mosque, Sent Antuan Catholic Church, Pera Museum, Çiçek Pasajı and French Street. You can also stop by Nevizade or Asmalimescit for dinner, drinks and entertainment.
The beautiful building that will attract your attention on the right when you enter the street is the French Consulate building. At the same time, French courses, various cultural events and festivals are held here throughout the year. Behind the consulate is the Armenian Catholic Surp Voskeperan Church.
Madame Tussauds, located at the entrance of the Grand Pera building on the right side of the street, is a museum chain where life-size wax statues of famous figures of art, sports, magazines and politics from around the world and Turkey are exhibited. The London-based museum has museums in many cities around the world. It is a fun place especially for families with children.
The Russian Consulate General, the Dutch Consulate, the Swedish Consulate, the Greek Consulate and the French Consulate are also located on this street.
Located on the left side of the street towards the end of Istiklal Street, St. St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church (St. Antony of Padua) is among the most beautiful and magnificent churches in Istanbul. Built in 1912 in the Italian neo-gothic style, the church is also the largest church in Istanbul and belongs to the most populous Catholic section.
