Jeremy, what I like most about your work is that you truly speak from a non-expert perspective. You don't use a lot of jargon, and when you do, you define it. Lastly, your enthusiasm is infectious.
Something interesting for me is that despite a little Franken-Gnome going on with package versions, Ubuntu actually has more visual consistency in the UI elements than Fedora 36. This is mainly due to Ubuntu holding back on Libadwaita. If you spin up Fedora 36, you will notice some apps have the modern button and menu designs (e.g. Software and Settings), while other apps still have the Adwaita theme, with bordered buttons and other common GTK3 interface elements.
The only thing that steers me away from any Ubuntu flavor is the forced use of snaps... by default some packages are using snap.. firefox, chromium and few others.. its a hassle to remove snapd and convert things back to normal packages as for one ubuntu isn't even building actual debs for packages that are snap by default.. the firefox and chromium debs install the snap versions and if snapd isn't installed it installs it.. no other base distro out there forces Flatpak, snapd, or appimage on you its optional and with ubuntu if I had the option I would use flatpak over it even though I really don't like any of them as none of them follow your theme without a bunch of extra work
Brilliant Review. Liked and Subscribed!
