HI Chef RV, I grew up eating Laing, prepared by my dad when he was alive. We grew them in our backyard and dad will harvest them , dry them and prepare the dish. I always think its not easy. My dad is a Bicolano and he loves to cook! I am not a cook like my dad, but watching your videos , led me to discover this. I tried for the first time to cook the dish, it turned out well. I never would’ve thought that anything but dahon ng gabi would suffice, but kung sa lugar ka na walang bumebenta ng dahon ng gabi, kale actually makes a very good substitute. It retains its structure like gabi does, but you do have to cook it for a while which don’t hurt this dish at all.

I've been using dried taro leaves in a packet but I've noticed it is quite sandy. So everytime I cook laing I wash it first straight from the packet. You'll see what I mean. Sometimes we can never tell where they dry them and when they harvest the leaves we don't know if they're washed or not.
Where we live is northern British Columbia (Canada), 3 hours away from Alaska. So you can imagine how far north that is, lol. But we have enough grocery stores to have the necessary ingredients, including canned "gata". Anyway, taro leaves are considered too "tropical" from where we live so we substitute with kale! It's similar texture and taste just as good!

Yung legit na Laing from bicol is hindi po ginigisa. Pag hahalu-haluin mo lang lahat ng ingredients sa gata aside from the dahon at hahaluin ng tuloy tuloy hanggang kumulo. Once kulong kulo na, then you can add the stem then last yung dahon tas hahayaan mo nga kumulo at lumambot yung gulay at kasabay non lalabas na yung mantika ng gata. Pasensya na nakikialam pure bicolano po kase si mama :) Peace

LoL Sorry, I had to reply. Not all Filipinos eat with their hands. And certainly not all the time. It depends on the food and the mood or if they don't have utensils available. You might find dried taro leaves online. And yes, this is a Filipino dish.

Use lacinato kale Kung wala Po kayo mahanap na dried gabi sa ibang Bansa. Nilagyan Po namin ng smoked salmon at the very end of cooking at masarap Po sya 💯 Thank you for featuring Laing. Some would put coke sa pgluto. Kinakain ko po yan with banana on the side and bbq pork or grilled tilapia. Yum!
I'm no Bicolano but my former housemate used to cook Laing. Ang Sarap! Lalo na pag hipon. And yes Mas masarap pag hindi masyadong mainit, Mas Malasa at matakam ka talaga. Keep it up, Chef RV. Love your recipes and videos. Very entertaining.

I've been using dried taro leaves in a packet but I've noticed it is quite sandy. So everytime I cook laing I wash it first straight from the packet. You'll see what I mean. Sometimes we can never tell where they dry them and when they harvest the leaves we don't know if they're washed or not.

Where we live is northern British Columbia (Canada), 3 hours away from Alaska. So you can imagine how far north that is, lol. But we have enough grocery stores to have the necessary ingredients, including canned "gata". Anyway, taro leaves are considered too "tropical" from where we live so we substitute with kale! It's similar texture and taste just as good!

Yung legit na Laing from bicol is hindi po ginigisa. Pag hahalu-haluin mo lang lahat ng ingredients sa gata aside from the dahon at hahaluin ng tuloy tuloy hanggang kumulo. Once kulong kulo na, then you can add the stem then last yung dahon tas hahayaan mo nga kumulo at lumambot yung gulay at kasabay non lalabas na yung mantika ng gata. Pasensya na nakikialam pure bicolano po kase si mama :) Peace
Uu nga ang alam ko din hindi ginigisa pero we can always try new techniques pero gusto ko kasama ang stem… love laing kasama lagi yan sa menu kahit ones a month kaya pag nagluto ako madami kc nilalagay ko sa ref pag gusto ko iinit na lang….

LoL Sorry, I had to reply. Not all Filipinos eat with their hands. And certainly not all the time. It depends on the food and the mood or if they don't have utensils available.
You might find dried taro leaves online. And yes, this is a Filipino dish.

being a Bicolano, laing is one of our regular dishes in the house. it's one of my favorites. your version of this recipe is mouth watering sinamahan mo pa ng kalandian at kaetchingan. what more could I ask for as your follower. talagang makati ka Chef dahil mahilig ka sa laing. pakalandi moh...I love your recipe
I remember my Tatay when he cook Laing..only oil lang ung pinaka sabaw nya ..oil from GATA...at Napaka sarap .
Use lacinato kale Kung wala Po kayo mahanap na dried gabi sa ibang Bansa. Nilagyan Po namin ng smoked salmon at the very end of cooking at masarap Po sya 💯
