It’s difficult to purchase a dress when you’re accustomed to sewing your clothes, but you look stunning in the Zara dress! Happy early birthday 😊

Thank you. Yes, it was difficult. Even more so when people kept asking me if I made my dress, because they know that I sew. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Thank you for sharing this! I've been feeling bummed about a whole trouser sewing situation so it was nice to be able to commiserate! In the end, you looked fantastic. And you've learned more about what you like and don't like.

That's tough but you did an awesome job with the dresses! Hope the next project gives you results you love! I wonder if the flutter sleeves dress could be saved with cold shoulder cut-outs to bring the vibes a bit fresher? The sleeves are fun to me; so maybe that would save the silhouette?

Oh, wow - that was a lot! I would have been frantic by the time the third dress didn't work out!!! Love the color of the Zara dress on you - and you obviously had a wonderful time, so good news after all the frustration and stress you went through. Today I tried on sweater after sweater in a store to try to find the right one - just harder when you have to sew what you want to try on first!

Avola Slip Dress from the Cashmerette Club! I've stayed away from the Sicily Slip Dress for that very reason. Your slip skirt is beautiful, though!
I'm so sorry to hear about your fails. 3 in a row must have been this. So frustrating. You look fantastic in the final dress!

Great minds… I downloaded the Avola slip dress yesterday 😊it doesn’t have the exact vibes but I can lengthen it, maybe cut it on the bias and take in the sides to create some shape. 🤷🏽‍♀️
Thank you for the suggestion and the compliment 🤗❤️

Oh my no, you didn’t bomb me out, my heart went out to you because I can sense your frustration and pain! Mainly because I’ve been there before and know how frustrating that is! I’m glad in the end you were able to get something you were very comfortable wearing and look absolutely beautiful in! Your review of each pattern was very sincere and honest. (at least that’s how it came across to me!) I hope you have a wonderful birthday as wonderful as you are! 🎉🎉 Look forward to seeing some of your Fall sewing!

Sorry the dress didnt work out as planned, however you still looked beautiful for your sister wedding and the color was gorgeous. I woukd definitely shorten the black dress, I thinkmit will suit you better. Please let us know if you decide to do that. Thanks for sharing.

Nice try on the dresses. I think the black sparkle dress short will look great on you. The Sicily dress takes a second to get the fit right; I had to do a toile first when I made it up in my special fabric. Glad I did. Happy, happy to your sister.

I think I’ll try the slip dress again in the spaghetti strap. But I will use a basic fabric in my stash. Maybe a rayon challis.

I used an old bedsheet for the toile and sewed it in the gifted silk. It really fit beautifully (if I do say so myself! 😁). I'm sure it will be lovely in the rayon challis. With all this Sicily dress talk, I might have to sew up another one for the spring! ☺ @@ShereeThomas30

Thank you,I really enjoyed your honesty! We've all had this happen. It always happens when you want it for a special occasion! I sewed two gowns for a black tie wedding and thought I looked awful in both.
I went to David's Bridal and got a beautiful dress, which I did have to remove 6 inches off the hem in record time.
So, to all the sewists, don't forget there are cocktail and special occasion dresses (sometimes on the clearance rack) that might save the day.
You looked fantastic in the Zara.

You looked gorgeous in the end! I totally understand what you were going through. I had a similar fit issue with a Burda pattern where it was too big and had ghost hips. 😂 Similar to that Mimi G pattern it was supposed to be a fitting dress with sleeves. It looked so frumpy on me! I had to take it down several inches on the sides and ended up cutting off the sleeves and doing a facing to save it.
I also had wedding outfit woes recently too! My brother got married in September and I agreed to make my moms dress kind of at the last minute because she was having a hard time finding something. I altered a pattern to her measurements and even made a muslin-which fit great. But when I went to make it in the actual fabric it was too tight 😰. The muslin and the regular fabric were both woven but there apparently wasn’t as much stretch in the main/real fabric. This was like one and a half weeks before the wedding. I ended up completely remaking the dress with new (stretchier woven fabric) and was able to get it done in time. I did have to take a few days off work to get it done but I did it. It was stressful!! Sometimes things don’t work out like you said but you looked very nice! I’m sure you will refashion or rehome those pieced just fine. Thanks for sharing your story!

Celebration time!!🎉🎊🎈 I totally know how it is to feel defeated by makes, especially using precious fabrics! Ugh. I know you are not happy with them but you have some great saves. However, you TOTALLY rocked your look for the wedding!!! GLAM all the way!! I'm glad you were happy with your wedding look at the end and was able to take the pressure off of yourself and purchase a fabulous dress. It's funny how things work out because the same thing happened to me with my sister's wedding except for my ready to wear dress was garbage LOL. Thanks for sharing the tips!😍🥰😃

Ugh, I'm so sorry that none of those patterns worked out for you. Sadly, sometimes these failed garments are part of the process. I totally feel your pain tho, I have a similar body type to you and I always have to take in those knit patterns. But you're right, we can't sew everything...and in your case, you still looked fab (along with your entire beautiful family!) in that Zara dress. Happy early birthday, hope you have a lovely day!

I was burned by the Mimi G pattern as well. I have an hourglass figure. The waist and hips were okay, but the neck and shoulders were huge! I took out 2+ inches around the entire armscye, and still it wasn't good. The neck was too wide as well. I ended up cutting off above the waist, cutting pieces from a different pattern, and sewing it on. That's when I realized the same thing you did - this is not a special dress. You can take a fitted T pattern that you know fits well, and elongate it to a dress. I would have to make probably four sizes down to get that top to fit, but then of course those sizes weren't in my pattern envelope, so I recycled the whole pattern. I was so irritated. The same thing happened to Whitney from Tomkat Stitchery. I'm sure that was frustrating to have several fails in a row. But I love your new satin skirt! Thank you for sharing!

      @ShereeThomas30  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Darn! I’m sorry to hear that you also had trouble with the neckline. I actually made a square neck T by pattern scout that is beautiful, I may turn that into a dress.

I am wondering if you are looking at the finished garment measurements closely. I am usually able to gauge how a garment is going to fit my body based on that. At this point I ignore the pattern measurements all together.

how frustrating! i definitely think you should shorten that last dress after seeing the zara one. i think showing your long legs could save it for sure. i wonder if you would be happier with a fuller skirt when you go long. it might balance out your frame better than doing a column dress.
