    Great video. Not sure about all the negative comments. We used a similar setup down at Port Aranasas and had great luck. The guy we fished with was pretty particular about putting the hook by the anal fin as you mentioned. Top notch video. I grew up in MN freshwater fishing walleyes. Appreciate the tips and the video. Great job!

    Interesting video, here in Rockport TX many of us use the croaker on free
    line in the grass flats, nothing but a hook on braid, works well. Also, depends on season, during spring and fall, shrimp is best, dead heat of summer, the small ones hit the shrimp, but trophy size hit only the croaker. Weight is best only in surf areas where they are hitting now, august time frame.

    I love fishing croaker. Try adding a chatter weight to your popping cork. Approx 5 " below the end of the popping cork then your 18 to 20" liter tied to chatter. Works pretty well.

    No craoker do get big,about like whiting.Excellent eating,we use to cathc them by the hundreds..when running w/shrimp in SC. The first time I used them for bait was in Texas.
    Awesome fishing in Baffin Bay with them.

    If there are trout hanging around the pier, it will work just fine. For trout, we also use live finger mullet and shrimp under a cork. When pier fishing, try mashing up the dead bait from the live well as a chum. When you are on the pier, you gotta get the fish to come to you.

    There is a fall spawn as well as a spring spawn. Time of day that is best will depend on the moon phase (normally). If you are not familiar with the waters in this area, hiring a guide is always the best way to get on fish. Steve Schultze, Byron Hough, Joey Farah, Butch White all are serious Pros. I have fished will all of these guys, and they are my personal friends. They are some of the best on the water in this area. Jetties are great for redfish and kingfish in Aug.

    The baitrunner in the video is a Thunnus by Shimano. They also make one called The Baitrunner. Both are great reels. Good luck in Port Lavaca, I have heard there are some lunkers swimming around there.

    I don't know what canal you live on, but we catch some bad ass trout in the corpus christi/ padre island canals in the winter. Not so much in the summer, but some BIG pigs winter. Especially if there are under water lights. The big trout will hang out on the edges of the lights and ambush bait that swim across. Fish the edges of lights, if any. If not, use a depth finder and fish deeper pockets of the channels.

    Depends on the lure. But generally you want to be quick on the hook set with lures. Topwaters, spoons, swim baits, crankbaits, and almost any hard bait, set the hook quick like bass fishing. Sometimes on scented soft plastics you have to decipher the difference between a bump and thump. If they bump the tail, twitch the bait, and don't set too fast until you feel a better thump, then set. Don't let them hang on to the lure too long, or they will spit it.

    I'm loving the fishing tips for flounder and trout. Any suggestions for heavy current and severe hang ups? I live near Carolina Beach NC and there's a spot called Snow's Cut that at one time produced the state record Flounder but fishing there is almost impossible due to heavy rip currents and massive amounts busted concrete and submerged logs. I've resorted to break away weights,which,is nothing more than a 8 lb piece of mono to hold my weight. It's helped a bit but... Any thoughts?

    good job---yes it works , I had a soft body croaker so I had to hook them below the spine . Also when sun came out and water got hot they were gone and it was only 8am . Any idea how to se croaker in the jetties with lots of rocks to get hang up on .

    as far as location, its hard to say this far in advanced, but with the Aug heat, the early morning is good in the flats, and if the water temp gets to high, you will want to look for 4-5 feet of water, channel drop offs, deeper holes, etc. Good luck.

    Cool video. I live in North East Florida. I don't know any bait stores that sell live Croaker for bait. I would love to try this bait in the spring. Most trout fishing here is done on popping corks with either live shrimp or mullet. Anyway, great video.

    Can you tell me what kind of baitrunner reel you have in the video? I use a shimano symetry but it doesn't have the free spool feature yours does. I also use the citica and curado baitcasters. We just got a place close to port lavaca so we will have access to plenty of spots down where you fish. I'm going to set up my leader like the one you have in the video and let you know how it goes. I'm going to try keller bay this weekend & maybe head south to espiritu bay or cavallo pass. Thanks again!

  • @modernpawn
    @modernpawn  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know how deep the location:
    for 3-7 feet of water try a popping cork that has a leader a foot shallower than the water depth. Use a slightly weighted hook (maybe a jighead or split shot) to keep the bait down and just point the rod with the current.
    For deeper water, look at Break-A-Way tackle's spider weights, they hold really well, and the spider hooks 'collapse' so that you don't loose the weight, but will not get super snagged. We use them in the surf, they rock. Good luck.

    • @modernpawn
      @modernpawn  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      not really, too much stuff on the cork makes them want to tangle. The cajun thunder with the brass beads makes enough racket by itself.

    Does this apply to lures as well when fishing for trout or reds to let them run with the bait a few seconds? I'm so used to bass and new to salt water so like you say everytime I felt a thump I'd set the hook.

    Like dagger/ ransom/ pelican island. Thats a great spot. The trout hang out in the grass, but if cast into the sand pocket, it makes the bait visible to the trout, and easily ambushed. If you are casting into the grass; cast, let the bait settle, and then don't retrieve the line, just remove the slack, and let the bait soak. You will not get grassed up so quickly. Godd luck.

    • @modernpawn
      @modernpawn  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      honestly, unless you are chucking dead bait in a channel for drum, I would suggest getting some waders. We wade fish all the time with no boat, just a truck. Nothing gives you a better 'feel' of what the bay floor and structure like wade fishing. Look for wind blown shorelines, look for oyster reefs, bait, etc. Good luck.

    From what I understand, large trout are specific about where and when they spawn. Any yes they spawn in a flat, a small area of with the right conditions. They also hang around that small flat area. If the croaker is in the area, they will kill it. Pin perch are good bait, but no where near as effective as croaker. The pin fish does not produce the monster trout that croaker can, nor does shrimp. It is what it is.

  • @modernpawn
    @modernpawn  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    First, a chatter weight will improve your catch rate over just a weight, I promise. We wade croaker, it works GREAT. You need a really good bait bucket, you can kill the croaker if they are too crowded. A large tow behind bait well will help keep them lively and health. Other than that, any where you fish for trout, try throwing some croaker, if the larger trout are there, they will work. Work them slow and don't move too quickly, they take a little time to work. Good luck.

    ModernPawn usually has some keen insight on some tactics, however they kinda missed their mark on this one. I will not lie, I started using that Procure gel because of one of their videos.. We call it the "The Juice." Drop some juice on dat chit.. However, you can't make a presentation about the best bait for trout without mentioning Piggy Perch.. Piggies are their natural, "year-round," arch-enemy.. I am not talking about Pin Perch or PinFish. In Florida they call Piggy Perch, Grunts.. That is the optimum bait.. They are to be free-lined just like Croaker, however we Whap 'Em every 10 to 20 secs, HAARRDD!! It drags that hook in them and makes them croak or grunt, would'nt you if you had a hook in ya and someone is tugging at it.. 4/0 Kahle is way too small. My brother wouldn't let you on the boat with that.. We use 6/0 and 7/0s only.. Big hooks for big trout.. I have seen on too many occasions Piggies have consistently outfished Croaker.. All of the best guides, if they can, get half Croaker and half Pigs for their trips in the summer.. Including our good friend Capt. Joey Farah.. My brother is a successful guide who works very closely with Capt. Farah.. ModernPawn has great production and clarity with their videos.. They have also produced footage of nice fish, I am not hating, just the conjoining of ideas..

    For all those that think I am wrong. Don't just say 'there is no evidence.' Prove your hypothesis right. My hypothesis is that spawning trout eat croaker not just for food. If all they wanted to do was eat, then any opportunistic food source should work as well as the next. This is not the case. If they just wanted to eat, then shrimp, mullet, shad, mud minnows, piggy perch, pin fish, blah, blah blah will work excellent. Not the case. Something about croaker works better. My hypothesis.

    Well, any trout over 25inches is considered oversized in Texas, and the limit is one per person. We only keep oversized trout (over 25) if they are gut hooked or will not survive. Smaller legal trout, are still mature and sexually reproductive so we try and catch and release as often as we can. Understanding where fish spawn is just part of the puzzle to finding large trout. So, yes this is a responsible way of harvesting fish.

  • @josephlewis8307
    @josephlewis8307 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the way you discuss the instinctual behavior of them as a species LOL but at least next time don't start in a gun shop got me all distracted looking around behind you but speckled trout especially to females should have a cop-out slot limit like drum here in North Carolina just imagine if every twenty five inch trout was put back maybe then we could all land a dirty 30

    Croaker are good to use until they bait stand no longer has them. The later you go into summer, the larger the croaker get at the bait stand, until they are to big to use, and they no longer sell them. Use them while they have them.

    Croakers are not enemies of speckled trout! The trout spawn and spread eggs all over the place and could care less if they ever see their eggs again, therefore, when there are croaker around, the trout eat them because they are just another food source for them. Female, nor do male trout, guard their eggs. All trout care about is eating, and spawning. They follow the food and congregate in areas with shallow waters, and high salinity to spawn during the full moons in the spring and summer and

    Also you will catch more trout if you don't use a sliding egg weight. Once croaker hit the water they will swim right to the bottom so using a weight is pointless and you will get hung up with grass a lot more when you use a weight. Chatter weights are fine but using a egg weight only hinders things even more. I have not found glass beads to increase the success rate of catching fish either. You can have one guy using beads and one guy not using them and the guy with beads won't catch any more fish than the guy without them.

      Mr_Drizzlemaster live shrimp on a popping cork. your leader should depend on the tide, and trout comes and go so you usually have a small window to catch them. the first two lights on the pier is where you want to be, on the left side. the slab is also a good place to fish. the slab is along the parking lot, you'll know what im talking about when you see it. oh, and i usually leave preferably around 7 pm and fish there all night and come back in the morning. if you see an asian guy that's 5'11 with a camo hat usually wearing a white tennis shirt, come say hi :D

    Croaker eat trout eggs?? Lmao no sir.. A myth, fishermens tale. They simply eat smaller bottom feeders like drum love spot. Croakers in the Chesapeake bay get big enough to filet and eat. Striper love them also. Trout are predators like drum and striper to these bottom feeders.

    I would put a money bet that croaker out fishes ANY bait for big trout. Any bait; shrimp, pinfish, mullet, mud minnow, shad, you name it. I know a few marine biologists, and the HYPOTHESIS, is that it is an instinctual defense mechanism. Now again, its a guess. But if it was just about eating, any bait should work equally as well, and I promise you, it does not.

    Catching them while spawning is counter productive, control yourself before Wildlife & Fisheries puts rules in place to control you!

    Where is the evidence that trout don't care about croaker, except for food? For large spawning female trout (trophy trout) there is nothing that will catch them as well as croaker, PERIOD. Nothing. Fresh dead croaker don't work very well at all. That is evidence that they want to kill the croaker. They feed off cycle, like any time of the day. Evidence that they want to kill the croaker. They pass on easier targets, like shrimp and finger mullet. Evidence. Prove me wrong..

    Fool the fish don't feed them. Lures are so much cheaper than live croaker.

    You would think if you were going to make a video talking about croaker fishing that you would get your facts straight and not say that croaker get eaten by trout because they eat the trout's eggs. It's a complete myth that trout eat croaker because the croaker eat the trout eggs. Croaker are simply food to a trout and nothing more.

    Impossible to watch you talk about fishing in front of all those mass murder weapons. Vomitous.

      Yes, cause those weapons murder people all the time. Makes perfect sense.

      Sizuper Those guns are pure evil. If you watch this video several times they will jump off the shelves and kill numerous people then clean themselves and be back on the shelves the next day for business. You are a idiot!
