Watching your reaction, I had to stop halfway through and implore my FB friends to help. I was like 10 or 11 when this song came out. I learned to play and sing it to impress the girl I was crushing on. This started a series of me learning or writing songs to try to impress girls. None of them worked. Over, like, 20 years. I'm actually a good musician, and a fairly decent singer, so I don't think it was because I was a hopeless performer - but I was certainly a hopeless romantic - as you seem to confess being as well.
