CHEAP Watercolour Paints vs WINSOR & NEWTON

  • I recently popped into my local craft store to see what was up and came across a £6/$8 (approx) set of watercolours, how could I not buy them to see how they perform? The shop is called "The Works" and it's known for bargain craft/art supplies, books and board games, so a jack of all trades really.
    What I discovered was really interesting!
    Music: "Mindfulness" (Free inside video editing iPhone app "Splice")
    List of art supplies:
    'Broadmere' watercolors from The Works (UK craft store).
    Winsor & Newton 'Cotman' watercolours.
    Prolene round watercolour brushes by ProArte
    Polychromos coloured pencils by 'Faber Castell'
    300gsm 100% cotton cold press watercolour paper from 'Bee Paper'

    Awesome video! As someone who uses student quality watercolors (I believe a tube10ml would be around 3£ according to currency changers.) I do still think a small investment is something to consider if the materials will be used a lot, especially if one is looking for decent pigment in the paints. Your paintings in the video are fabulous but not very vibrant so I'm left questioning how "The Works" paint would do in a more colorful challenge. "The Works" paints seem quite decent for the price they are! I'm surprised! For starting out the cheapest is of course a wonderful way to go! I just remember when I was around 12-14 years old and the only watercolor paints I had were the cheapest chalkiest things ever (pans, not tubes) and I just hated painting with them. Either no pigment or then they would create this weird...paste like texture that would cover everything, so layering was out of question. And mixing colors was a nightmare since all the colors seemed to contain a white of some sort in them and no matter what you tried to mix the colors would be muddy! And then when I finally got my Van Gogh student quality watercolor set(usually compared to the W&N cotmans(we had W&N in high school art class and I disliked them due to the lack of pigment compared to same priced Van Gogh (at least here the price is similar))), there was no going back. I used to hate watercolors, before I actually got decent quality paints, because the cheapest stuff in most cases just doesn't really want to work in a good way. I have now also tried some more....expensive paints as well (Schmincke full pans) but only a few colors due to the price. As someone who's only a hobby painter I can't justify buying very expensive materials (the most expensive one's I've gotten were gifts) so you making a video like this was a wonderful reminder that it's not the material that makes the art it is how you use them. A challenge of papers would be also interesting to see (cheap-student-expensive) and also in watercolors since now it was (cheap-student). Congratulation on your new channel and Good luck!

      I totally get you about the chalky cakes, I made sure I wouldn’t use those for this because of exactly the things you said, I think that kind of paint is best for kid’s craft perhaps right? Or at least for art that suits that kind of paint etc. That’s a great idea for the paper review, I am doing something like this in my next video which is my top 5 tips for watercolour beginners as I believe paper to be the most important thing to invest in personally so I’ll be comparing 4 types/brands. I have always wanted to try the Van Gogh, and it’s great to hear you recommend them vs the Cotman, I normally use W&N professional series but I like to try other brands because you never know if they’re going to be amazing for the price like you say.
      Glad you enjoyed the vid and I’m grateful for the feedback 💙

    The painting with the cheap paint looks great, which is a testament to your skill. Talent can make a painting done with coffee and dirt look good though.

    • @Oozaru85
      @Oozaru85 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nah, its the paper. Its always the paper when it comes to watercolors. Use 100% cotton paper and even cheap paints will perform well on it.

    • @serenityjewel
      @serenityjewel 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Oozaru85 there are a lot of watercolor artists who use cellulose paper and their artwork is beautiful. There are mediocre artists painting on arches paper and their work is still mediocre. The tool or supplies will never limit the artist. Plus I detest cotton paper because the colors dull so much.

    • @Oozaru85
      @Oozaru85 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@serenityjewel The skill of the artist has nothing to do with the peformance of the paints and paper. We are not talking about how well the final art piece looks. We are talking about how the supplies perform compared to other supplies.
      Cellulose paper will never perform as well as cotton paper. Otherwise artists wouldn't buy cotton paper but the cheaper cellulose paper instead.
      And watercolors will never perform as well on cellulose paper as they do on cutton paper. Thats a fact. it has nothing to do with skill. Thats why most professionals recommend good quality paper even (or rather especially) to beginners, because no matter your skills, the cotton paper will always give you better results and working on it is much easier and more pleasant than on cellulose paper.

    • @serenityjewel
      @serenityjewel 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Oozaru85 Yeah, you have no idea what you’re talking about. The best paper depends on what you require for your style of painting. Cotton papers stay wet longer allowing you to manipulate the wet pigment longer, but once the paper is dry, it’s hard to lift the pigment. Cellulose papers have a weaker affinity to the paint, allowing lifting and blending, but largely preventing you from glazing. Since I don’t use a lot of water or do a lot of glazing, cellulose paper works better for me. However if I did a lot of wet on wet or dry on wet, then I would use cotton paper. The right paper depends on what you’re doing. Get off TH-cam listening to self taught artists learning from self taught artists. It gets tiring listening to y’all commenting on whatever nonsense of the day you’ve decided is “facts.”
      And for the record, stating your opinion is “facts” does not, in fact, make it “facts” when you’re wrong.

    • @Oozaru85
      @Oozaru85 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@serenityjewel Ah yes, Im wrong but you of course are right. Ur the expert while Im just some self-taught artist. Sure. Maybe you should get off your high horse and do more research. I dont care what works best for you. Thats ur personal experience and opinion. Its not facts. And the fact ur using cellulose paper more than cotton already speaks for itself. You have no clue what ur talking about. Ev every orofessional watercolor artist out there will tell you that the quality if the paper is what counts most. And cellulose paper will never beat cotton paper. Lifting is a feature beginners use most, thats why student grade art supplies exist. Claiming you cant use certain techniques on cotton paper is also the dumbest thing I have heard. You clearly have never used premium cotton paper.
      Stop making up stupid claims and get iff ur high horse. Or do you really think I believe you more than all the watercolor professionals out there saying the exact opposite of what ur claiming? Lol, again: ur personal experience doesnt make it a fact. Just because you arent capable of working with quality paper, doesnt mean quality paper doesnt matter. Because with watercolors it matters he most. You can google it if you need proof. Or look up pro watercolor artists on that topic. But stop spreading false facts and ur personal experience as facts.

    This is interesting to see. I had a previous version of these and their gouache, bought so long ago, they were 14ml I think, and 14 colours cos there was a purple and maybe another blue. I didn’t use them much which was a shame, but they were okay, chalkier than Cotman etc that I’ve used since. I ended up throwing them away cos their binders were leaking out the tubes a lot and they were 15 years old, still it’s good to know they’re not that bad. Funny to have an acrylic kind of binder, though.

    • @Finelinernerd
      @Finelinernerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great one! I’ll add it to the list 🤗 I don’t think it has to do with quality, what brand are you using? Most of the time it’s down to colour theory (like mixing cold colours with warm colours) or it could be to do with multi-pigmented paints, like if there’s a green pigment in your blue paint and you’re mixing it with red, then it’ll go a muddy purple colour, I’ll definitely take this on as a challenge and show why things go wrong on camera 🤜🏻⚡️🤛🏻 will need to do a bit of experimenting myself!
