Love this tune reminds me of my uncle he had this album when I was a kid my brave face is so beatlesque love the fact Elvis Costello got him to play his violin bass on this
Dear Sir Paul.I really enjoyed you over all the years your music is great.I wish you the best of birthday and happy birthday to you may you have many more
Love that groovy voice. Figure of 8 is still one of my fav in Paul's discograohy. I sang It in the world tour he mentioned, in Milan Italy. "Is It Better to love One another...."
Such a great album. If you don't have "Flowers in the Dirt," you should buy it. I saw him in concert at Tampa Stadium in 1990 on this amazing tour. Great times!
...to all the moaners , who complain about 'miming' etc....someone has mentioned below about the musician's union thingy ....AND this Wogan show was a LIVE broadcast , 3 times a week , so to help prevent any LIVE cockup ...special arrangements are made for shows like this. I was at a ''LIVE to Japan by satellite'' broadcast in June 1989 , when someone messed up the playback of a taped performance , meaning that the band were stood waiting for the intro for around 5 seconds ...then it suddenly came through, but cut short - meaning that Paul and the band missed the opening of the harmonies on 'My Brave Face'. I bet 'someone' on the sound-desk got a severe telling off by Paul after the broadcast was over...
I recall watching this when it aired Friday 19th May 1989. I got Flowers In The Dirt a few weeks later for my 20th birthday. It remains one of my favourite Macca solo albums which takes me back to that glorious summer.
What were those dancers all about!!😂. I remember getting this album and loving it. It was a return to proper songwriting rather than the predominant garbage that was around in the late 80’s. McCartney is a one man institution.x
it is. Elvis Costello convinced him to pull it out for flowers in the dirt. Still had a beatles setlist taped to the side from 1966 which inspired the My Brave Face video
The Höfner was used in the Coming Up music video in 1980 but it also has been seen in public during the concert for Kampuchea in 1979, but guess what, it's "played" by Robert Plant. ;-)
Yes, that was my first McCartney concert at Texas Stadium,. Had floor seat tickets, 2nd section, $37.50- those were the days. Now a nose bleed seat will cost $75.
It's very interesting that he is using an almost exact raspy style of vocals he used in the mid 70s. He pretty much stopped singing like that in 1980 and onward. It's really cool he sung like that on this great song Figure of Eight. I honestly think this is his best song that he wrote in the 80s
Thanks for pointing that out. I don't pay that much attention, but my brother does so it's good to be up on it. I remember seeing a vid of one of his concerts in the U.S.(after our concert in Tempe,AZ) where his voice was shot.
The 89 90 era of rasp was due more to age than effect like it was during his excellent vocal period of the mid 70s...don't take my word ...listen to maybe I'm amazed off of wings over America...then play maybe I'm amazed off of tripping the live fantastic and you get a solid illustration of this . He is my favorite musician of all time so I am very familiar with his work. That awesome 70s rasp was last heard on tug of war..the song "the pound is sinking is the last time his vocals were truly comparable to his 70s zenith
A final note...listening to this in 2020 is much different than listening in 1989..due to the current state of his vocals this sounds smooth and powerful...albeit not as strong as his 70s stuff....when i was listening in 89 I was disappointed in the deterioration of his vocals
@@michaelfrazia4569 I have to wonder if Paul not touring much (at all) in the 80’s till 1989 weakened his scream. I saw him in 2002, and his scream on “Maybe I’m Amazed” was better than what he did for Tripping the Live Fantastic. His voice had a resurgence during that 2001-2007 period when he was out on the road more.
It seems this performance was lip-synched, but I enjoyed it anyway. This is the first time this clip rotated to my attention. My Time Stamp for viewing this is 9/27/2022
Weird that they played "Figure Of Eight" live but "My Brave Face" was to a track . . . . more odd since they did play that song on the tour. I knew it wouldn't be live when he didn't give them a chord before it started to get their harmonies.
@@kevinbanks7472 not how I hear it. "Figure of eight" had a slower tempo than the original and the guitar sound was different. Clearly live to me but 🤷🏻♂️
@@TonysMusic1974 Bands who did playback for tv sometimes had different recordings made especially for playback, that would reflect the players on the day. Paul cleary misses words. He misses "early" at 4:27, "wanna" at 4:33, "better" at 5:08 etc. Who is playing bass at 5:55?

This is all lip synched, which makes it even weirder that the backing track of Figure Of Eight isn't even the record. It's some pre-recorded live off the floor version where Paul's voice is especially raspy which may mean that it was done as a last minute thing. I wonder what the deal with that show is. And of course he wanted to play and not talk to the host. Good hell, if that wasn't obvious to everyone. Let the goddamned band play after introducing them, Sue.
I think there were still BBC Musician's Union rules that meant you could only mime to a track if you recorded it again, rather than simply play the studio version.
Yep, there's a video Paul did that was a rehearsal for that tour that he mentioned at his farm in Scotland I think and this is the audio for that. The video is called Put it There I think, I recommend it it's great and intimate and such.
@@crosmas Yeah, this is from the Put it There movie. I think Paul recognized that this is the best version of the song and right before his voice sadly started to go.
