  • Dragnet is a radio and television crime drama about the cases of a dedicated Los Angeles police detective, Sergeant Joe Friday, and his partners. The show takes its name from an actual police term, a "dragnet", meaning a system of coordinated measures for apprehending criminals or suspects.

My husband and I don’t watch tv anymore. I have a friend who is in a cable show called Z Nation and both my husband and I refuse to watch it because of the language and other content. I have an older friend who unfortunately watches A LOT of tv, and one of his favorite shows is called Lucifer, which is beyond me why he likes this morally misleading show though it’s for entertainment purposes. I grew up listening to music and I didn’t watch television much, so I’m truly enjoying these old shows. Like you said Tommy Truth, the shows that are out today are garbage.

    I am 76 years old.
We had a Philco Television. Of course, it was black and white.
"Dragnet" was a show we never missed.
Back then, in those long ago days, ALL television shows had Christmas themed episodes. Most would be repeated every Christmas, if the show lasted.
Douglas Fairbanks showed the story of the writing of "Silent Night". "I Remember Mama" had an episode that recounted the Norwegian folk tale of the animals that speak at midnight on Christmas Eve. That show lasted many years and they showed that episode each year.
These episodes were something that we all looked forward to.
I must have seen this "Dragnet" episode five or ten times...most on TV when the show was still a weekly event. The story was still used when "Dragnet" came back in the late sixties and early seventies. It was in color then.
After all these years, this story still makes me cry.
    Merry Christmas.

Dragnet is and was a big favorite of mine, specially this episode.. Thank you for uploading many of the episodes. I do know for a fact that there are at least a half-dozen or more episodes that can be had that are on the public domain. I, and I'm sure many others, would be deeply grateful if they could be reloaded on TH-cam. Many thanks and blessings.

The comments on this are incorrect. We Catholics don’t worship statues, but those who don’t understand won’t listen to reason. Mary and Joseph had to go to a stable...or whatever it was because it was Mary’s time to deliver the baby Jesus, thus the only place was where animals were kept, and the only place to use as a crib was the crèche. I love nativity scenes because they remind me of the birth of Jesus, as others are reminded too.

This is actually a B&W copy of a color print...It was the first color episode of a regularly-scheduled TV show ever broadcast, by NBC-TV right after the FCC approved compatible RCA/NBC color TV (Dec. 23, 1953). Note that the end credits mention "Pathe Color," a color film photographic process and trademark.

I am not sure why people always blame smoking. According to Wikipedia he died of heart failure. My own father also died of heart failure at age 64 in 1990 but was not a smoker. Many men died of heart disease at a younger age in those days. I am not a smoker and agree it isn’t good for anyone, but because someone died of heart disease and happened to be a smoker, the two are not necessarily connected. Right now my wife, 53, has heart failure and has never had a cigarette in her life.

Jack Webb's dry, pedantic narration does not detract from, but only adds to, the piquant charm of this story; as does the dialogue between the various characters, and the original music weaving throughout. For DRAGNET to represent Christmas so nicely against its usual hard-boiled backdrop makes great pause for reflection...

      3 flaws:
-as the value was very low, it not cross any state or district mandated prosecution for felony theft
-the church was open, and the lad was not trespassing, so he wouldn't picked up on burglary charges.
-because of the above 2, if the church did not press charges, nobody would bother do anything about it, and even if the church did press charges there is a good chance it would be declined by the DA and anyone with a brain.
If you hate the police, suit yourself, but better to look at things through the lense of law and reason rather than the lense of drivel. I didn't even get into why only Deputy Dum-Dum out of Kleetus Kounty would think it be a good idea to charge him as a fkng adult. Marry Christmas

I wasn't born when this episode was made, but I remember an Adam-12 episode set on Christmas Eve. A car with the family's Christmas presents in the trunk had been stolen. The thief was apprehended but at first it appeared that the car and the presents would have to be impounded as evidence and consequently the children would not get their presents in time for Christmas. At that point, the thief himself admitted that he did not know about the presents in the trunk. Since the presents were not evidence, the children had them in time.

Don't get me wrong. While I found this episode touching, try calling the cops in this day and age and tell them somebody stole the Baby Jesus. NO one will give a shit.

Jack Trim i'm in the Los Angeles area, I don't know where you are, but absolutely the LAPD would never get involved on something like this now! Of course I'll never know, but I wonder if even in real life they would have back then.

It just depends. I was a Denver Cop and there are a lot of great stories, like an old lady called because her cat had died. Two officers responded. They took the cat and buried it in her back yard for her. I'm also a Vietnam Vet. "Please," don't paint all the cops with such a wide brush. Some of us actually joined the force to just help people. All this kneeling stuff at football games to protest is truly offensive. Multi-millionaires, "Get off your high horse." Most of this black lives matters won't cut it! Tell me how many people were in Rodney Kings car the night hey got a beating? YOU look it up. You'll guess wrong, guaranteed.
