    do the terms LAN and Subnet mean the same thing? if youre talking about your home LAN thats called a Subnet too right?

      A mesh network is a different topology completely to a ring topology.

    What does speed have to do with whether communication is local or not? Very confused by that statement. Could you please clarify?

      It means that local speed is much more under your control than speed to the outside. Want a 10Gbit/s local network? Just buy the right network cards/switches/cables etc. and enjoy. Want a 1 Gbit/s internet connection? That speed can fluctuate since it isn't always guaranteed by the ISP.

      @@stringtheory00 I try to explain that to people who aren't getting their rated 300mbps from Spectrum. "SPECTRUM IS FALSE ADVERTISEMENT", they say. The ISP should explain these things a bit more, however.
