- Piano Finger Exercises, to strengthen the weaker fingers and create better finger independance. Inspired by the book Essential Finger Exercises by Ernst Dohnanyi. Warning: for best results do these exercises slowly and a little at a time...over doing it can result in finger/wrist pain.

Thanks for presenting these great exercises to a broader audience. Currently this exercises also help me a lot. If you don't mind let me give you some suggestions for 1:58 1. Try make more active finger movement (lift and strike the key). At the same time try to reduce your arm movement. Currently your arm makes still most of the work. 2. Try not to squeeze your fingers into the wrong direction, put them into a round shape. 3. Play sometimes really very slow but with very fast key strike. Then you will have more breaks between the notes which you can use to lift and bend your fingers up before striking the next key. 4. Try to avoid sticky notes at the same time still play legato. Thanks for sharing, again. Cheers.
Many thanks for sharing your knowledge...I'm sure it will help others who view this tutorial.
Great tips for me to learn Stefan, best regards.

Stefan Bötel. Can you do a tutorial video on this!
My 5th finger has a life on its own, dont think it even knows we are playing piano.
Beatballer Music 😂😂🙌🏽
Yeap- they tend to be full of attitude problems!
omg same with my fourth finger loll
Beatballer Music a hahaha very funny
😂😂😂😭😭
You don't necessarily need a piano to do this exercise I've noticed. My table works fine too when there is no piano around. Nice insightful exercise. Thanx!
Even I don't have piano but I am using this amzn.to/2us8EOd to strengthen my fingers.
Lol I thought I was the only one who did that
I downloaded a piano thing on my phone
but its quite different from pressing on piano keys, as they keys go down but the table dosent. Its so hard😭😭😭
@@ericvong4053 So why bother?
Thank you so much for putting out this free video. I am currently in a position where I cannot afford to take piano lessons from a teacher, and starting to learn the piano at the age of 51 does not make it any easier it’s people like you that care enough to put out your free knowledge to help people like me who are financially in a rough position And have nowhere else to go. Thank you so very much for your time and making this video and adding the advice to start slow was great. Thanks again. God bless.
I appreciate the great comment!
Wow! My weaknesses have been revealed.
Its all of our weaknesses, until evolution sorts our fourth finger out
+short steve i guess piano play is not strong enough adaptive for having success genetically.
my left fourth is a nightmare...hahaha...working on it!!
@@thapelodludlu1594 me too
Thank you very good exercices for strengthening the weaker fingers. I think it is also important to pay attention to the base from which the fingers operate, the hand. If the hand is not stable, especially the weaker side of the hand which easily collapses, the fingers have no base to operate from. Yes indeed, what you say, keep the wrist flexible👍🏻
Thanks so much for sharing!
The moment i started doing these i almost imediatly felt my body processing something it hadnt before. Thank you so much, i just started today and i almost imediatly felt progress. Deffinitly will use these!
That gives me great joy...I mean that....something I could pass on, that is of value to you and others, gives me purpose and affirmations. Blessings!
"This one is hard too"
Dude im dying.
Take it easy and slow. Be sure to read the warning!

I just started to practice this. OMG! it's freekin' hard and it's just what the doctor ordered. I wish my piano teacher (way back many years ago) would have actually shown me useful exercises like this. I can't remember her playing ANYTHING for me to demonstrate. Thank you again!
Take it slow and build up over time....don't overdo.
I'm coming to piano as a guitarist. This is very similar to guitar finger independence exercises. A BIG problem on the guitar is "fly away" where your fingers lift WAY further than they need from the fret-board. This one's going in my daily routine. Thanks!
I'm glad to hear that guitarists can use this exercise designed mainly for pianists. Thanks!
Wow!! Thanks!! I haven't played in years and just got a piano. When I sat down, I was thrilled to find I remembered so much but was sad about how sloppy I sounded. It seemed like it was worse when I played slower. I knew I'd need to get back into practice but I didn't know where to start. Then I searched for strengthening exercises and found a lot of beginner stuff that was pretty boring. Your video absolutely hit the mark on my weaknesses. This is a real challenge and I can feel it working on my first try. It's just what I needed.
+Gigi La Fleur Thanks so much for the comment; as you can see I'm not getting many comments to this video. I'm not sure why because these exercises are great. So I'm glad they are helping you. Please give a thumbs and subscribe to my channel and keep watching.
This 8 years old video just humbled me hahaha, i thought i had a good fingers control and this just cracked my fingers, really good exercises fully recommended to try out and thanks
They helped me ...that's why I wanted to pass on some of the easier ones.
I'm very glad you're using Dohnanyi. His exercises are a MUST for any pianist!
These exercises have helped me.... so I'm passing them on.
well, dunno what it is exactly... but i realized that when i do this exercise with just 3,4 and 5 (leaving 4 pressed down, switching 3 and 5) it works kinda okay as soon as i put my pointer into play, the 4 wants to go with it... in short: fingers are strange people :)
Edit:oh i think i know why... Guitar Powerchords... the 2 and 4 are used to work together i guess :)
Thank you! that was a problem I had -weak fingers especially 4 and# 5 on my right hand. Good teacher you are. I will watch you.
Glad it was helpful!
my fingers are not listening to me!
I have known the feeling...keep at it!
yea, the left 4th kinda has it´s own head :D
ah, it´ll learn... worked on the guitar, has to on the keys too :P
Lol, mine don't either. this is really challenging
My pinkies raise themselves every time I play the piano
lol!
because of this covid-19 I went to this you tube and it helps me with this finger exercise i am a beginner and it helps alot to me thank you
I'm glad this helps, and be careful!

thanks))) after 10 minutes of working, I do not feel my fingers at all)))
Take it easy...you have to start out slow with these exercises and build up over a period of a month. There is a caution at the beginning of the video because (believe me!) I know the pitfalls of being over zealous).
hope, after several month fingers will work properly))))) now i feel much pain if practice some music where is needed to slide black notes alot))))
@@mariatymoshenkomusic6027 hi Maria... it's been 3 years....did you find a solution?
Thank you so much for this. This is really tough but necessary indeed.
You are all over the world Mr.Kent Hewitt. Piano players in Malaysia love you.
Believe me, I'm humbly grateful for that. I worked hard at this and now is the right time for me to pass on the knowledge. So many, many, thanks for telling me!
if only people could see imaginations, they'd realize i also do these exercises in them. its also the first of finger exercises I give to any one who wants to learn from me..... bless you sire
Thanks for writing and affirming that these are helpful exercises. I wish you all the best!
Accenting notes with every finger helps too
Especially the pinkie and thumb
Good tips...thanks!
Merci for this. Since I have almost been playing 3 weeks, this exercise really fits into my life of teaching people to rehabilitate their body. I used my juggling experiences to help but the hand is something else. And I was born with two left ears, LOL so learning a new language at the same time is a challenge.
You're very welcome!
I played piano for 8 years in the past. Now, after a 13 years absense from thekeys, I decided to start it again. Unfortunately my 4th finger, mostly in the left hand, is not responding. It feels like it's bonded with the 5th finger. Can't lift it adequately from the piano board....During the last few days I've started to work on some Hanon exercises and Cramer's etudes, but I'll try your exercises as well.
Thanks! If you have a hardening of the tissue at the base of the finger(s), you might have what I had which is Dupuytren's Contracture. There's a cortisone type of shot you can get or surgery...which I had to do. The 4th and 5th finger are linked (united). I'd try these exercises...but very slowly and not too many in one session, but try to get results by regularity and a little at a time.
msxoin when I first started doing these exercises i that fourth finger drove me crazy. when holding 2345 which is a little easier variation my fourth did not go over 3/8 inch now just working just a little everyday with piano or without I can do 1/2 inch.. I sometimes do just one hand at a time and here is an exercise that will help you do 12345432123454321 over and over again you do it very intervals. do it a light touch if you feel any strain do something else .. when I started I did not feel control that was probably a year ago or more I wanted to have it sound steady ..that is closed to realization so don't get discouraged also another thing that can happen is in performance or strenuous practice you can literally start feeling stressed in your fingers...stop... that is not good for you .
Kent Hewitt d
Wow, your comment gives me hope I may play again!
msxoin a
I practiced this today for the first time, and had to stop because it started to hurt. I might have overdone it lol. I'll try to tone it down a bit next time. Thanks for the video, I hope this exercise helps me.
If I need a refresher (get in shape) I'll do these for about 5 minutes and then all 12 major scales. (3 and 4 octaves) and then I'll practice tunes and improvisation. Do that routine for a few days (15 minute warm ups). You should see results in less than a week if you keep at it. Just don't overdo.
Hello again. Thank you for your advice. I did all of that today before practicing, and I gotta say, I feel the difference. I feel more strength in the 4th and 5th finger. There was a part in the song I'm practicing that I kept messing up, because I had to use those fingers. And now, I still mess up sometimes, but way less than before. I'll definitively keep doing this exercises everyday. Thanks again.
that's a clue that this 'exercise' will injure your hand if you're not careful. This is a very bad idea. The way to play the weak fingers with strength is to align the weak finger with the palm (not reaching and not playing independently) Using the arm to add strength to the weak finger is the way to avoid injury. these exercises are dangerous! Trying to make the 4th and 5th fingers operate independently ignores the structural fact that both 4th and 5th fingers are connected by the same tendon. th
Kent, this is awesome, number 1 is impossible [Check], number 2 is impossible [Check]. I did find that focusing on not doing legato, and focusing on both the strike and then the lift, separately, really helps getting started. Hopefully I'll be able to report that things have improved beyond "impossible" in a week or two.!.
Please write to me with your suggestions, and I'll put them in a new video, perhaps. Thanks a million!
@@KentHewittpiano88 OK, been doing this for a week, have to start by repeating what I said earlier, it goes immediately from impossible to possible by focusing on when to lift the fingers and being conscious of both down and up. For me there's two separate things going on. First is brain coordination where practicing this starting at a ridiculously slow speed gives me the ability to slowly pick up speed over the week of practicing, and I'll probably keep at it for another couple weeks. Second, and I'm not sure how relevant this is to anyone else, is the fact that my right hand 4th and 5th fingers don't operate independently very well, and when I practice something that requires it I get a muscle burning sensation in my right forearm after a minute or so. I suspect my left hand doesn't suffer this because as a young child I learned some guitar folk songs and that requires all sorts of left hand finger contortions and lots of pressure to keep the strings from buzzing, etc, etc, etc (anyone that's played guitar knows what I'm talking about), while my right hand stayed pretty limp even while picking the strings. So now as an adult student of the piano I'm wishing I had been forced to play a left handed guitar as a child :-)) !!!
Anyway, to make a long story even longer..., what I did about twenty years ago to get over this was practice the first 20 Hanon finger exercises forwards and backwards and in all twelve keys. It was really important to go through all twelve keys because that forced me to exercise sometimes with the 4th finger on a white key and the 5th finger on a black key and vise versa, and that required quite a bit of work for me, the muscles of those two fingers in my right hand don't like to work "opposite" like that (one high and one low, and vise versa). And as this reply is already too long I won't go into all the other benefits of the first 20 Hanon forwards and backwards in all twelve keys (in a circle of fifths, C,F,B-flat, etc, not the other way around, since this is the direction of VI-II-V-I). I can't overstate how important I think this is (and that Hanon got it a bit wrong by staying in C).
OMG ...I’m reading the comments ...😂😂😂😂😂 you guys are briliant ...so , the world after covid-19 will be full of pianists ,master chefs and Sagitarius.
Yes we are
These proved to be beneficial both for my piano and my guitar playing.
Thanks for telling me!
Kent! I saw your video some months ago and I have been working with the exercises.
I just want to say two thing:
1 - It really works.
2 - Thank you!
Liliana, thanks for telling me. You are "right on". and I'm delighted you told me!
I'd never seen these exercises before. Started using them today and yes, the fingers have a warm glow after a while, so it's a little a day for now. In the past few years of learning I've found my memory of scales is okay, but my fingers won't go where the brain tries to direct them. This will hopefully improve scales and arpeggios. Thank you to Kent and of course, Ernst.
Stephen, I don't know if you are used to playing exercises. This is only for the weaker fingers, for strength and independence. Hanon and Czerny are better for overall technique. I like to practice scales in 2 and 3 octaves , as well as arpeggios. I have videos on both of those exercises. The other part about getting your fingers in sync w/ your brain , that takes practicing on a multi-level. A good choice for a new video.! Thanks so much!
@@KentHewittpiano88 Invaluable advice, thank you again Kent. I think my fingers are taking some time to adapt to caressing the piano rather than banging out a tune (as i've been playing guitar for 43 years albeit only a hobby and piano practice for 5 years).
Do you think ahead, as you play, with late colour changes?
Thanks again Kent - I've had a lightbulb moment from this! I can adapt these to work for saxophone and flute, minus the thumb. With sax, the pinky has to do the most mechanical work, so developing 4th and 5th finger independance is really useful. I've just given it a try and it's tough! It feels really unnatural because these are just nonsense fingerings on the sax. For any sax players - I'm pretty much doing what Kent is - try holding index left hand and pinky right hand down on a B and low C, and play a variety of patterns with the other fingers. Work down until you get to left pinky on low Bb and right hand on F. Can't say yet, but I think it'll be benificial.
Hey Matthew...that's really cool....because I thought these exercise would only be useful to pianists...so I'm glad to hear you are utilizing and benefiting!
Wow you're multitalented
For the longest time, I had trouble with the knuckle collapsing on each pinkies. After decades that has improved. I am struck how these exercises are like typical beginning organ instruction. A lot of emphasis on holding some notes while changing others and lots of finger independence. Often pianists will play organ music wrong in this regard.
You made some good points, thanks!
I will add these to my daily routine. it will help my dyslexic fingers!
Thanks for telling me, but go slow and careful.
Thanks for this post. I recently damaged my hand by over practicing the banjo. I have been playing piano for 60 years and make my living at it. I will let you know if these exercises help. Currently seeing a massage therapist, chiropractor and doctor. I had a teacher at Berklee school of music that showed me these in 1969 and my technique was never better after doing them. I only hope I can work my way back.
Sorry about your accident. I developed Dupruytrens Contraction and my RH 5th finger is bent in...I've had to learn to compensate and play differently. You may have to do same. I think a physical therapist (including their exercises) might be a better option than these exercises...be careful not to over-do them and end up worse. Good luck!
Thank you sir , I will do it daily practice.
Keep it up!
Please post the difficult ones too! These are amazing and a great help. :D thank you so much.

This is extremely helpfull for guitar players who wants to shred the guitar. Thank you so much. It is imposibble to shred on the guitar without those piano exercises.
Either way I'd shred it nevertheless.
thanks. that looks very useful and simple to. great stuff
Glad it was helpful!
Played piano a lot like a year a go. I play for quite some time,..... maybe 6 years, but we always had quite the shitty out of tune piano, that had a crack, pretty much unfixable. We got a proper one like 3 Years ago. It was quite good, and I finally could play songs properly now. Started with the E-Guitar like a 2 Years ago and at first I had quite the problems with the strength of the pinky and the independency on the left hand. I got that fixed now, but now the problem has arisen, due to the fact that I play more guitar, than piano nowadays, that the strenght of my right hand had dissapeared. My right pinky is now weaker than my left one....I reall yneed to practise more again! I know these Practises help, because they also helped at the guitar, back in the day.
Thanks for telling me. These exercises helped me to develop strength in the weaker fingers. Occasionally I go back to them when I need to prepare for an important gig or concert.
Cheers, Kent. I can already tell these will be massively helpful.
I appreciate your telling...be careful!

+bryann torres You, and other folks out there are awesome for writing to me. That's the reward that I get and there is a lot of satisfaction knowing that I can pass on the knowledge and help in this way.
My teacher gave me "Exercises for fixed hand" of Loeschorn or something like that. They are pretty similar. And hard as HELL
Even though I can play double octave, single note lines pretty well, my left hand (I'm right handed) is my nemesis. I think it's a combination of not knowing what to do with the left hand to keep the forward motion flowing and, well, being right handed. So these exercises should help reduce or eliminate at least one of these problems. Your videos in general should help the other! Thanks again...
+Jeffrey Newton Jeffrey, I'm glad you found these. They helped me to improve my "chops". Be careful to not "over-do". My latest video has some improvisation with some Left Hand movement that helps it to flow. I had a subscriber ask to explain it, so I may do that in future videos. It seems to be a question that comes up a lot. Thanks!

For almost less than a decade of playing piano all by myself. Still struggling with this exercises. I think I need a piano lesson from the experts that's what it lacks for me.
I studied with some experts, the best was Fred Hersch. But mostly I learned on my own and from musicians I played with, and listening to records.
You don’t necessarily need a piano because this is not so much finger strengthening exercise as it is a mind strengthening exercise. These two exercises really work on the mind
Good point...thank you!

Incredibly exercises !!!!!thank you very much sir
If you like these, then I suggest you get the book of exercises.
yes I agree . another thing started doing and it seems to be opening up the brain pathways.. is using unusual fingering on chords eg r.h. normally I use 135 for chords in first position but have been using 123 this works the fingers more and allows me to have other fs. to play embellishment notes. here is another one that I have tried on and off and could not really get it naturally except in root position. playing the notes of first inversion in their inversions down and up sometimes going slow this allows multiple things feeling the bumps of the keyboard the b f# d# .ect.. you can say the notes of solfege I tried to do them fast but I find slow play helps burn things in the brain. last night I was able to do that at a very fast speed in triplet form.. I know this just a reply to a reply but this may help someone also is there a nice chord profession to use over this pattern .
you have to use all fingers on chords, depending on what chord you do you will have to vary which fingers you use. Not all triplet chords can be done using 135. Sometimes you can use 2 instead of 1 if the first is on a black key. And some chords has little distance to the next, which makes 124 or 125 the natural way to do it. Playing chords in root position is not natural if you combine differnt chords, you will get too much movement. If you play F, G, C, Dm etc. just after one another, you will not be able to play them efficiently in root position for all of them.
just found out about ur channel..and This video was so HEPFUL !! thank you SO much.
Thank you so much for the affirmation...that what I'm doing is helpful and useful!
Great! Thanks a lot! It's very helpful clip, really!
Be careful to not get finger or wrist strain...and they can really help to improve technique.
try it step by step
practice right hand first then practice left hand.
if you get used to, combine left and right.
1. hold down 3rd finger
a. 1212(repeat as you want) - 1414 - 1515
2424 - 2525
4545
b. 1242 - 1424 - 1252 - 1525 - (game begins) 1454 - 1545
c. 2454 - 2545
d. 5424 - 5242
e. 124542
2. change finger, do same way, good luck
Thanks for the tips...I hope this will be of benefit to many, as it was to me.
Great exercises, they surely will strengthen your fingers. I think the problem for most though is that we don’t practise enough. ;)
Probably true!
Great stuff ..Kent!!!
These are good...I'm glad you found them.
amazing! God bless you more!!!!

I dig it. Glad it helps!
