    Yes, this is indeed interesting that Jackson decided to film the Old Man Willow scene. For anyone not in the know(read the book): between leaving the Shire and reaching Bree, the hobbits take a path through some dark woods where Merry and Pippin are suddenly consumed by a living tree known as Old Man Willow. A strange fellow named Tom Bombadil(not featured in the films at all) comes a long and commands Old Man Willow to release them. The words Treebeard speaks, "you should not be waking! Eat Earth, dig deep, drink water, go to sleep!" were originally Tom Bombadil's.

    •  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ken Upton Yeah, I remember that scene in the book! It'd have been interesting to see Tom bombadil in PJ's adaptation.

      Most adaptions of the Lord of the Rings choose to omit Bombadil. Jackson's reason was due to the fact that Bombadil did very little in advancing the plot of Frodo and company getting to Bree and the Ring.

      Also, he palyed an important role in the barrow-downs, and... they didn't film that. I wasn't exactly hoping to see that part of the book on camera, though. XD

      shitass Tom Bombadil and the woman were always strange characters. Perhaps they would have clashed with the more serious "war" tone of the trilogy. And then everyone would be asking "why wasn't Tom affected by the Ring?"(though he was only unaffected in his area). I would liked to have seen the Blue Wizard talking to Gandalf though as he saved him from Saruman.

    • @death-king1834
      @death-king1834 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Actually it was Radagast the Brown that helped saved Gandalf from Saruman. At that point in the story the Blue Wizards had seemingly vanished years ago, when they disappeared into the east of Middle-earth.

    • @NickCorbinOfficial
      @NickCorbinOfficial 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it works in this context because it shows how wrathful the awakening trees are becoming because of the destruction of Saruman.

    Ol Tom wouldn’t have translated well to the big screen, so I understand why he wasn’t included. Of all the characters to film the willow man with, i think treebeard works best. He’s as old as Tom and his being Fangorn himself means he has the power to tell that grumpy old willow man to behave himself. Treebeard is one of the first Ents born of Iluvïtar and is often called “oldest and fatherless” by the elves.

      The problem with the extended movies is they're too light hearted. Look at 0:28 and tell me that's not light hearted fluff. It ruins what should be a tense and gripping end of the world trilogy. The theatricals keep the urgency and tension and don't meander.

    • @gianna526
      @gianna526 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@DestinyAwaits19 There's plenty of light hearted parts in the books though, quite often the characters will try to make light of a situation and sing or chat. 12 hours of unending tension and oh-my-gosh-the-world's-gonna-end would be so stressful and annoying, I like having a bit of humor every now and then, and it's never at an inappropriate time.

    Tom Bombadil would've been so great in the movie FOTR.
    He was always my one of my favorite characters in LOTR, and he actually played a big part in their quest. Such a shame they kept him out of the movie.

    • @death-king1834
      @death-king1834 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      The only problem with Bombadil's character is that he does very little in advancing the plot. The Hobbits meet him once and afterwards he plays little to absolutely no importance further on as the books go. Aside from helping them get their barrow blades from the Barrow Downs. Which is the reason why Jackson chose to omit him from the films.

    Basically, a divorce.
    Other than Saruman being a modern day politician after defeat, the only contemporary commentary in the book is a lowkey comparison between happily married Tom and Goldberry, and a divorcee Fangorn living with his memories, and regrets.
    Just observing. I love the book for what it is, ie heroic romance owing more to Homer than to Hemingway. But a handful of motifs are unmistakably modern, which I find interesting.

      Yes they did indeed, which is why Tom isn't here. They realized that he just wouldn't work and he slows down the story and doesn't add to it. He's a character Tolkien threw in for fun, probably an excuse for a bunch of songs which is great and I love it, it gives a lot of personality to the book I feel, but it would just slow down the movies so much, and they don't have as much time to spend lollygagging about and singing like Tolkien did.
