The audio in this video was recorded with in-ear binaural microphones. If you wear headphones, your mind won't be blown, but it will go, "woah, that's cool."

Here on TheTopher, I'm known for putting a camera on my face and driving cars. Whether it's about any of my personal cars or reviews on weekly press vehicles, the goal is to give you an idea of what a certain car is like to drive or live with. Most of my videos are filmed in POV, with my clothes on, and (for like the 5th time) with in-ear binaural audio. Which, if I haven't made it clear yet, is why you should wear headphones. Because of the whole "woah" factor. It's there, trust me. Try it, it's pretty nuts. Or don't. As long as you whitelist me on your adblocker I'm okay with whatever you do or don't do with regards to headphone usage. That is all. Oh and I guess you should also probably subscribe. Why are you still reading this, you should be watching the video. With headphones! Hah, had to sneak that in there one more time. Later!
We have a new 2019 CX-5 with the turbo. It's a joy to drive. All the impressions in this video are spot on, the (mostly) good and the bad.

Great Video TheTropher
thank you!
Thanks!!
Back again with this cool car!
Excellent review. Just purchased a Signature trim today. Cannot wait for delivery.
i find it hilarious how people expect a 36k$ car to be as premium in every aspect as a 60k$ one...seriously, match your standards according to the price range
Vloading it’s just paying for the brand... i mean i understand but still
Agreed. "It's nice but, idk, you could pay for a better brand." Not for the features, the design, the power. Honestly, Mazda sold me and I've bought both of my last cars new from them because I like the product so much. A mid-tier cx-3 that I have since traded in for a 2019 CX9 Signature. Great vehicle, giving it to the girlfriend to take her and the kid around in and I'll be either grabbing one of these or a to-be-released Mazda3 turbo sedan. Great work Mazda, keep going.
I find it hilarious that people pay 60,000 for a ‘premium’ luxury German car that is better in some areas (the infotainment system) than this 40,000 car but much less reliable, a little worse to drive, worse equipped and will cost you twice as much to run.
Love your videos man. Your honest reviews made me buy one of these a few years ago and it's been the best car I've ever owned!
For a four banger it sounds really nice, even on the outside
The CX5 is the only crossover I consider to be having a character. Everything else seems too watered down. The other crossover I'd pick is the Rav4 because of it's legendary reliability.
Toyotas give me a headache with all the over styling they do to their cars, and the blind spot. Especially their terrible thinking. They put hard plastics in where people are going to to touch the most, and they put leather in areas where people aren't going to touch at all. The hybrid is especially terrible for the driver and the overall comfort of the cabin. Everytime you're at high speeds or steering, it feels like the wheels are dragging on metal or something, its laggy, and the seats are literally the most comfortable things in the car. Not saying they're much comfortable either. Everytime you put it into reverse, It makes the loudest most annoying reverse sound I've ever heard from a car. Sounds like a turkey gobble, not even kidding. I could go on and on about Toyota's, but this comment is getting too long. The only company I would ever buy suvs from is Mazda or Honda. Hondas would be very good if they didn't have that CVT. Mazdas dont use any CVT junk and they're very premium looking and comfortable. They're also plenty reliable, can probably last up to 15 years with no major problems because Mazda's starting to make their own transmissions now ever since they split from ford. Idk, just my thoughts.
11:59 Karls Cabin is a pretty decent restaurant if anyone cared.
I have been driving a 2018 Mazda six for about eight months now. It shares many similarities with this vehicle. Driving it is great. Makes me look forward to my daily commute. IYou are correct about the sound system, though. I would call it not bad, but pretty average. Surprised at how much I liked cooled seats. Very nice. Thanks for the great review
Love the vehicle. I have one. But the Grand Touring. Great vehicle. Very luxurious.
I just got a 2020 grand touring reserve with the turbo. Red with white interior. Just added new black wheels as well, love it so far! This makes my third mazda. Owned a 19' hatch and 17' mazda6.
Topher u are the man
227 HP with regular and 250 HP with premium but the torque stays the same regardless.
If you're an average driver, you won't tell the difference really. If you like to move faster, you'll notice, I've driven the CX-9 several times, and it does actually makes a difference when you're pushing it, it for sure isn't the fastest car out there (heck, not even the fastest 3 row), but if for sure is super responsive and that low end torque really makes it easy to merge with traffic or taking a spot before anyone else...
250HP if you put premium in it. Only 227HP if you add regular...
Alot of Mazda drivers with this and the Mazda 6 wondering why " it does'nt feel like 250hp.." hmmmm
@@jaylee8703 , roughly 300 pounds heavier than Mazda 6 (with the same engine and transmission).
I test drove a GTR. The turbo transforms it into a rocket ship.
This is the only SUV I would consider buying.
Rsx beats this.
@@neometalx9 Subjective.
Test drove this when I was in the market. It drives like a sports sedan and is super quick for a small SUV. The inside is small but feels luxurious. The back up camera quality is absolutely terrible as well as most of the infotainment.
Good video Topher!
I am excited to see the cx 30 turbo review when it comes out :)
Nice job Subaru, you stepped down and Mazda stepped up, the xt lovers can go with this now.
Subaru dont care they got alot of people that dont like driving to buy that so called sport model
@@tonychau1983 ironically, the xt is still faster than this...
@@neometalx9 unfortunately it comes in a cvt.
@@tonychau1983 yup. That's the thing, even with wack ass cvt and older than this new cx5 with 2.5T, I don't understand how is it not slower the xt than the cx5 turbo...
The cx5 turbo seems cool and all but the xt still a better car.. But for the people who really wanted the xt new generation, they have this as an option..
Also, I could deal with it being slightly slower but the interior is so cramped compared to the Forester, were they trying to make it feel like a sedan instead of a roomy suv?
@@neometalx9 all mazdas are kinda cramped. They're more geared towards more fun to drive.
Great sporty SUV. I hope they update the infotainment system.
I timed your 0-60 a few times and kept getting 6.4 seconds, which I think is good... if I'm correct it's the quickest of all the small SUV's besides the Sportage 2.0T and the Equinox 2.0T they all do under 7 seconds.. but man this Mazda looks super good!
Sportage is definitely the quickest in the class.
Driving in Arizona the CX-5 has 10 more HP and 70 more lb ft of torque, and certainly outperforms the Sportage
Connecticut Dashcam really? I’ve driven both I honestly felt that the Sportage was quicker. Maybe you’re right. 🤷🏽♂️
@@ColoradoSpringsDashcam who knows, we need a TH-cam reviewer to race them!
ImNotReallyBritish agreed!
I’m on the fence and I love you!!!
Love the start up
Is Mazda as good as other Japanese brands?
It sure is, consumer reports rates the Mazda brand 6th overall vs all brands, Toyota is 9th and Honda comes in at 13th, Subaru is 1st. Hope this helps, mazda makes a great vehicle
@@bjackson8784 what rating is that? cause that's not the reliability rating that's for sure.
Heck493 it is the overall brand rating that includes reliability, owner satisfaction and number of recommended models. This is straight out of the April 2019 consumer reports magazine. Toyota and Honda have dropped down in the list, Mazda and Subaru have risen
@@bjackson8784 Interesting, I can't seem to find it but i also don't subscribe to CR so i can't see most of their articles past the first paragraph. All i know is that subaru, and Toyota/Lexus normally top the reliability, with Mazda being fairly far behind but still respectable
Heck493 Subaru moved up of from 7th last year to 1st this year, Mazda moved up from 13th last year to 6th this year. Toyota went from 10th to 9th and Honda went from 9th to 13th. Overall they are all good brands, really cant go wrong with any of them
Not a "Sports crossover"
But it is a "Sporty crossover"
True true. "Sports" is very overused (not just in cars).
This is a late comment but if you want fast bootup times on the infotainment system, take the navigation SD card out the slot in the centre console and turn off the option to import contacts automatically from your phone. You don't need either of these functioning if you have android auto or carplay. It is SO MUCH faster.
Out the door price less sales tax for this loaded? Nobody talks about that!
Mistook the title for MX-5. Will it be possible for a MX-5 with turbo in the future?Without breaking 50-50 balance and still light-weighted?
Beautiful!!!.
Wish we had a choice from manufacturers to special order a manual here in the states. Their are plenty people who still want and prefer a manual. Wouldn’t mind waiting to have an manual delivered.
I agree about camera ;)
Wait so you cant use the heated rear seats if there are 3 in the back since the buttons are placed in the armrest?
Chris neighbours must be weirded out when the see him in a new car every week.
Some say he’s a billionaire who only drives a car until it gets dirty or needs gas, whichever comes first.
my 2017 cx5 gt's steering wheel didn't age well at all. It lasted maybe 3 months. Now its has glossy black cheap look to, doesn't match the rest of the interior leather at all. thinking of getting a replacement wheel. maybe with continues care and cleaning it would of lasted longer.
dvgd999 my. Wheel went funny and they replaced it under warranty
I believe you get 20-30 more horsepower on premium gas
Mazda allows you to purchase leather protection seal on the seats and wheel. Plus warranty too lol
From the side profile it looks stubby then previous model. I like the 15-16 model years better. Not sure how long the turbo will last too.
So, it's like an Asian BMW with a budget infotainment basically :p Next years update for Mazda, better specs for infotainment. the new Mazda 3 had it already.
I think it's also time for Mazda to give people the option to get ambient lighting interior. All the premium european brands have it and it's amazing.
Sevy except the seats in any bmw are much wider and better and bmw has a RWD push instead of the FWD pull. Both of which this car is lacking.
@@LifeISMagix Some BMW's are now also FWD mainly. 2series & X1. i think they will even do that for all models? i'm not sure though
Sevy could be but BMW was always considered a RWD brand with an AWD system. Historically this cane from the notion of them making “sport sedans” which always had RWD or its bias. The current FWD trend is just the direction BMW took when they went more mainstream which also, as many people say today, was when BMW started to lose their identity.
@@LifeISMagix True
@Clark Fredrickson Well we drive an x1 and its been perfect so far. but its only 1 year old also. i think aslong u just do the yearly maintenances most brands can be reliable. and keeping the car in original state. modding it and what more. flaws happen for every brand if u just hit a bad luck production...
Did you say this car is almost forty Grand
Yes yes I have the same noise
On full stop or idle
You know theirs a sport button. When you switch it on. It accelerates faster.
The start/stop technology was a deal breaker for me. Having to disable it every time I take a trip would become too annoying
Ik I’m 3 years late but there isn’t start/stop in this car
I have a 2009 forester XT. Love the turbo power and the real working hood scoop. Put it into Sport mode and it shifts at higher rpms. I do the same high rpm shifting with the paddle shifters on my 6 cyl Outback. Miss the days when I had manual shifting. Does the CX5 have a sport mode or paddle shifters?
He covers it in the video. Yes sport mode, no paddle shifters.
It's funny, i'm wearing headphones, and the moment you mention the injectors ticking, i cant stop hearing it lol. awesome video though
Cx5 or Rav 4
The paddled shifts?
Modern FWD based AWD systems shouldn't torque steer or spin only front tires.
Are the side mirrors auto-dimming on the CX-5 Sig?
Love my 2021 gtr
2 questions:
Are you running Regular or Premium gas?
Do you adjust the audio settings for the sound testing or just have them set at the base line?
With the turbo, you get 227HP on regular gas, 250 on premium.
No stick shift with the awd (2013-16) No STICK AT ALL 2017-.
@TheTopher are you going to get a 2019 Silverado/Sierra?
feels like this car is over-hyped a little bit. I am deciding between a brand new cx5 signature or a L/certified rx350. So far I've only driven the 2018 CX-5 Ground Touring, it's got a premium feeling inside. just the feeling tho haha. love your content bro
Try the signature and you'll see why all the hype...
you're comparing a used car vs a new, that's too many other factors involved
@@omgitsme435 I am considering a 17or18 rx350. The price is about the same in my area. Probably gonna go test drive both, but so far I like the RX better haja
Does your cx5 shift smooth? or sometimes it hard shifts, even at operating temperature?
can you do a0-100 kmh video with both 91 and 87?
I just wish the engine/exhaust was louder when I'm in sport mode
What is the up-beat song you used to the audio test?
Why it reminds me Audi inside?
Awesome good
100% the nicest offering among the mass manufactured companies... I'd still take a BMW X1 over this though..
That awd there is a bust. Loosing traction at start because only two wheels are powered? Is that awd actually doing anything??
Cold tires + salty roads = nothing is going to hook up well
Can you do a 2.0T GMC Terrain?
Is the backup camera reliable enough or is it a deal breaker
It could be a deal breaker if you drive in reverse all the time. Or you want to try to take selfies with it somehow.
You need proper drivers gloves in the winter buddy. I know I’m glad I have mine. I’m in Virginia. Great videos btw.
New mazda 3 ETA?
do the rear windows have sunshades? thank u bro
Interior I want in a rx8
Thinking this or VW Alltrack
Sergey the sportswagen is a blast to drive .
I'm not convinced by the rear end of the cx 5
i hate mazda transmissions feel... MAZDA PLEASE UPDATE IT!
Can you please review CX-9
He already did!
Their seats are way too firm with not enough leg support cause of the short seat
Any thoughts on the long term reliability of the turbo version of the engine compared to the naturally aspirated? NA has a much longer track record vs the turbo only being around since 2019. Especially for those planning on keeping the car for the duration of its lifespan.
The turbo engine doesn’t have cylinder deactivation! That’s a big win for reliability right there
@@TheTopher Good point, but I am still concerned about the long term reliability of the turbo. I may opt for a used 2017 if i can get a good deal on one - no cylinder deactivation!
How does this compare to the subaru forester XT?
CX5 has nice interior, much smaller and more uncomfortable seats, much more front wheel bias and worse sound system (if you go for Limited with Subaru.). Subaru has all of these mentioned above better but unfortunately it also has a CVT. I prefer the driving dynamic of the Subaru because you don’t feel the FWD bias at all. And of course the AWD in the Subaru is incomparable to Mazda’s in rough terrain. It’s wayyyyy better. You will need to get the 2018 XT while you can get a 2019 Turbo so that’s something to think about. I own the CX5 and as the seats are a disaster, I would definitely buy the XT just because of that alone. Used to own a 3.6R Legacy and non of the issues of the CX5 were present there. The CVT held up well, no issues. Subaru has issues with the infotainment though, similarly to Mazda. But the premium sounds sound light years better compared to the Mazda.
HugFest Not quite lol. CX-5 is dimensionally similar, actually larger in certain aspects. Seat comfort is subjective, but with the seats having been designed by a spine surgeon, they are very comfortable and supportive. And the 10 speaker Bose surround sound system puts any of Subaru’s systems to shame, with inferior components and dynamics
Connecticut Dashcam clearly, you are going off paper data and never drove these cars. You have no idea what you are talking about.
Subaru ddiscontinued XT version.
@@muyaho420 Exactly, there's no more performance level Forester. Automatic win in 2019 for the CX-5
Your new subscriber here can I know the song please 4:12 your awesome men like all your vids 🤙🏼
Nice
For around the same price well I have saw a lot of rebates on the new Santa Fe . Is there any way you could request to make a video on one? I think that’s a really good competition because well it’s not sports but the ultimate has a turbo that makes 220 torque and 235 hp. And does everything besides sport better then Mazda. But it also doesn’t look as good. But I need a second hand opinion
Dus Clo If build quality, material quality, and driving dynamics are NOT important to you at all, the Hyundai would be the way to go. But if you’d rather pay the same amount for a better built and better equipped vehicle, the Mazda is for you
final gearing is wack... highway mpg should be a little better.
In real world we are getting 30 mpg highway with 87 octane. [2019 cx-5 t]
0-60 looked like 7.2 - 8 secs
I'll wait for the MX 30.
The Turbo Diesel in Australia has better torque and more fun to drive.
Diesel all the way baby.
Yeah, it cost more per gallon at the pump. LOL
When are you going to shave your beard?
The crossover for car enthusiasts is definitely the Alfa Romeo Stelvio - the CX-5 - not so much. It looks nice tho!
They're intended for different people. The stelvio awd is $4000+ more than the CX-5 turbo awd loaded. Granted, I would classify the alfa as the performance model in comparison but it's apples and oranges. The cx-5 is a compromise for those who want a more reliable but spirited daily than what alfa offers.
Sound system sounds decent at this price bracket.
The Mazda leather steering wheel wear just as bad, if not worse than the similar feeling VW/Audi wheels. There are 2017's with the same wheel for sale with 10,000 miles and are already all shiny. Shame, because both the vw and Mazda wheels look and feel so good when they're new.
Jeffrey C It’s very high quality leather that’s why.. with fine grain and supple feel, maintenance is necessary If you’d like it to stay flat
2019 Hyundai Santa Fe
RandomVids drove it. Strange drivetrain. Looks great . Great seats
227HP isn't much for a turbo. Especially considering it's a crossover
Would you rather have the 190 in the crv?
@@tonychau1983 I wouldn't buy that car either. Is that a Turbo? Lol
@@001spring yea it is. Whopping 1.5t I believe
@Clark Fredrickson Why is he saying 227?
@Clark Fredrickson Yeah, 227. The torque is good like you said. I like Mazda interiors, probably best in class imo.
sounds awfully tinny. like a 718 cayman
I wish CRV WOULD HAVE THIS engine . Don't like the look of the Mazda plus metal so cheap and rust coming so fast . How many speed ???
that injector noise is just annoying
Your Voice is so :DDD
His beard is sexy!
First off, there shouldn't be wheelspin on an AWD system. That's the point of an AWD system, to prevent wheelspin. This is especially important off the line. second, that last gear needs to be taller for better economy. Also why does it shift so early and not at redline?
Cold tires + salty roads = wheel spin.
Too small for family for this price
“You do get a tiny amount of torque steer.”
WTF! What kind of shitty AWD is this?!
Worst cameras? LOL have you even been in a Toyota? Get outtaaaa heree😂
19 inch wheels waiting to be cracked on a pothole
Then don't like a crazy person, especially on bad roads.
Small interior, not very utilitarian...
@Clark Fredrickson how would that make it more fun?I don't understand.. For me it's not fun to be cramped in such a big car, the car itself looks big and it's the same size as the new Forester and crv but it's the more cramped inside between the 3.
@Nai-son ` would have to, if I wanted a sedan sized interior then might as well just buy one...
2019 RDX>CX-5
It better be since it's more expensive
No shit. Luxury brand vs non luxury brand
