Here on TheTopher, I'm known for putting a camera on my face and driving cars. Whether it's about any of my personal cars or reviews on weekly press vehicles, the goal is to give you an idea of what a certain car is like to drive or live with. Most of my videos are filmed in POV, with my clothes on, and (for like the 5th time) with in-ear binaural audio. Which, if I haven't made it clear yet, is why you should wear headphones. Because of the whole "woah" factor. It's there, trust me. Try it, it's pretty nuts. Or don't. As long as you whitelist me on your adblocker I'm okay with whatever you do or don't do with regards to headphone usage. That is all. Oh and I guess you should also probably subscribe. Why are you still reading this, you should be watching the video. With headphones! Hah, had to sneak that in there one more time. Later!

Am I the only one that loves the scroll wheel for the infotainment? I have a Golf R (touchscreen) and the gf has a CX-5, but I prefer her infotainment much more, and she even has the '17 without ACP/AA installed. I actually find the wheel less distracting and enjoy the tactile feel you just can't get from a touch screen. I think in practice and living with it, it starts to become very natural, especially since it frees up the touchscreen to be higher up and right in your line of sight, rather than having to look down and reach over to non-physical "buttons" on the screen. Plus, no nasty fingerprints all over it. I am 1000% biased here, but if that's the only thing keeping your fiance from buying it, just pull the trigger. The way this chassis handles is outstanding for a crossover, yet no tradeoff in harshness or punishment. It's not a perfect vehicle, but even with the non-turbo engine, it's such a great package as a whole.

100% love the wheel or wheel like design. It took a day or two to figure it out. It is so easy to use while driving that I couldn't do on touch screen. And yes, it took a little longer to load everything in the morning but no deal breaker. BOSE system is great for this price range unless anyone needs to shake and wake the neighbours..!

I know the look and sound of those crappy Michigan roads anywhere! On the bright side, it's an excellent test for ride comfort. I think Mazda is doing A LOT of things right with their cars. The design, material quality and fit and finish seems remarkable for the price point. I just recently test drove a Jaguar F-Pace with my wife and the interior quality (and driving experience) was embarrassing for what they're asking. The Volvo X60 we tested prior might as well been a Bentley compared to the F-Pace. I told the salesman as such and he agreed that 'you buy this for the badge and not much else'. That experience drove my heart ever nearer to seeing what Mazda has to offer in person. I'm looking forward to test driving a CX5 this week!

We have the 2018 same model AWD 2.2 Diesel here in New Zealand . Only three months old. The torque it delivers courtesy of the twin turbo system pushes you back in the seat at low rpm's and just pushes you up any hill with no drama, just a big shove. We had the earlier version we bought in 2013, same motor but the power has increased from 129kw and 420 nm of torque to 140 and 450 . 6 years now of CX5 ownership, we'll never move from Mazda

I bought a 2019 CX 5 GT Reserve in "Soul Red" for US $34,050 in Henderson, NV and sold my 2013 Toyota Prius v wagon for $12,000. cash.. This car has everything I want in a compact SUV except better gas mileage.
    UPGRADE MODS:
    1. 255/55/R19 all season tires (when the OEM tires wear out)
    2. Dynamite acoustic mats inside the front wheel wells and front floor.
    3. I installeda K&N filter for possibly more power with the better air intake flow.
Also I tried a tankful of pure 100 octane and WOW! It feels like its always in SPORT gearing and when IN Sport it is QUICK. In that mode with this "super gas" I spanked a VOLVO XC 40 that tries to race me. Ah, teaching humility to the "entitled".
I'm assuming this car has iridium spark plugs. If not I'll install them for another 8 - 10 horsepower. (Yes, it's true gentle readers.)

Tires can make more difference in handing than any other single upgrade.

Thanks, for your POV reviews. I'm a subscriber, a long time Mazda owner and have owned a top of the line Soul Red 2019 CX-5 Signature for about 3 months. I have to agree with most of your review. Overall I love my new CX-5. I traded in my old 2007 Mazda 6i 5-door on it. Loved my old built in Flat Rock, trouble free car, but had my eye on the new 2019 models.
I was looking for a new 19" wheel design and the brown Nappa leather interior. The Turbo is a plus.
I only have a couple issues. I wish the brown leather was a little lighter like s saddle leather color, and (as an older man of 65) that a CD player was still offered. Also. the gas mileage could be a bit better. My wife has a 2015 CX-5 non-turbo and you can really feel the extra power of the turbo. She get about 22 MPG in the city and breaks 30 MPG on the interstate. I'm getting so far about 21-22 MPG. Overall it's a great car. If it was a little cheaper at say, just under $35,000, it would be a real bargain.
BTW, I live on the east side of the Detroit area. The city streets and roads over here are worse.
Thanks again for the great reviews.

I have a newly purchased Signature and now have 1200 miles on it. I'm getting 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. I set the cruise control to 63 mph and drove 50 miles. I wish it had a cd player as transferring music to a thumb drive is time consuming. I like the car very much, but I don't understand why the whole steering wheel is not heated. Also, the padding on the side of the center console is too thick and forces my knee to the left. I'd like to cut that excessive padding off and put something thinner there. Or why couldn't they have made the center console a bit thinner so this knee issue would not exist?

I think the reason the engine revs 5-5.5k rpm is that Mazda designed the engine for response and torque delivery, the small turbo spools so fast that it will loose steam past 5k, from horsepower/torque charts from automobile catalog, after the engine makes its peak torque at 2k rpm it will start to fall off, like a Diesel engine

I went to the dealer with every intention to purchase the CX5 Signature. The thing that killed it for me was at 6 feet I just felt cramped in it. Not enough cargo space and cubbies. The console lid is so far back I had nowhere to put my elbow. I ended up with a 2019 Santa Fe Ultimate 2.0 which isn't as sporty but didn't have those issues. Santa Fe also had more equipment and that pano sunroof which brightened up the interior. If you are small the CX5 may fit better but for me it just came up short. Hopefully the redesign will fill these issues.

This is a beautiful car and this design can last for another 8 years and still the best looking SUV out there. The only thing I want Mazda to do in the next iteration is the space and the camera/infotainment system, it needs to upgrade it. If they make this more spacious( a bit longer and wider) this will be the most attractive compact SUV in this segment. I love this car specially the soul red crystal it looks stunning.🏎 🏎 🏎 👏 👏

I bought a 2020 GT, and Im really, really enjoying the performance it has on the road for a SUV.
This car is more biased to be a sport/performance than it is to a comfort/relaxing drive.
I say this because I spend 3 hours commuting with my CX-5 everyday and I complain about how hard the seats are (specially for the head) and the small space it has to rest your right arm.
But besides that, if will be comfortable enough and has performance enough to be a very enjoyable mix of both.
I love to floor gas it when overtaking. And its fun to see other SUV`s and sedans trying to catch up, unsuccessfully.

It shifts at 5.5k is because its peak power is between 4k and 5k, and shifting a 5.5k drops you to just under 4k, which keeps you always in that range while maintaining a proper ratio between gears. I am sure they picked the precise shift points for maximum acceleration based on the number of gears they had to work with. They could probably keep you in that meatier section longer with an 8+speed, but this transmission is really good (supposedly, my mazda 6 is a manual, so I actually havent driven the auto) and the thing is quick so who cares!

This is my favorite car in this segment. The ride is pretty amazing on those roads for 19 inch wheels. Also, holy shit are those roads bad, it hurts me just to watch the poor car go over that. I live in Eastern Europe but our roads aren't quite as bad right now, although come pretty close after a long winter of salty roads. My favorite is the interior. It's absolutely gorgeous compared to other modern cars, IMO.

We have 2013, 2015, and 2018 Mazda CX-5s (for my wife, our daughter, and for me). The 2013 has the 2.0 liter engine- better gas mileage but less power than the 2.5 liter in the other 2. The 2018 rides smoother and has a better looking interior. The one with 17 inch wheels has cheaper tire prices. The other 2 have 20 inch wheels. We like the Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires a lot better than the original tires- the original tires only lasted about 35,000 miles. I also test drove a CR-V and a Crosstrek. I only liked the digital speedometer and extra luggage space for the CR-V, and everything else was worse. The Crosstrek brakes felt better, but the steering was a lot more numb, you sit lower, and it has less luggage space for less money. I did not test drive the Forester or the Sportage- too ugly for me, and the bottom of the Sportage windshield seems too tall. The Tucson was too unreliable based on Consumer Reports magazine owners survey results. The Tucson that we test drove earlier seemed average for everything. We test drove the Outlander and Outlander Sport and they were slow, with a low quality suspension. The RAV4 was uglier and did not drive as well as the CX-5, but the reliability is probably very good, with more luggage space than a CX-5.

The surround cameras work great for watching my puppy that has no respect for cars yet. It has 3 rear camera modes, looks like you were on wide angle.

We have a 2017 CX-5 GT. I keep thinking I may trade it in in several months for a Signature (Turbo). Then I think, the fuel tank is too small, the gas mileage is poorer, and the price is high. I might as well get an Acura RDX A-Spec at that point....and that's the issue I fear. I was dying for the Turbo, and then I thought about the price and what else is available!

Yeah man wait a couple years until it becomes standard. I LOVE my 16 cx5 with the NA engine. Still good power (and faster than the 17 and 18 cx5s) with better fuel economy. Won't be upgrading until something really substantial comes along.

re: rpm not going past 5500rpm (it would change just shy of this for me), I've asked Mazda Canada about it, and they replied it's tuned to give optimal balance of power/fuel economy.. Hmm.. but it's designed for the "Driver". I didn't check if it forces you to shift if full throttle in manual shift mode. Did you double check that ? I do find the ride is more than just a bit stiff w/larger wheels. I'd force dealer to put 18 or 17's on it. or switch myself, for the more comfort ride. It's on my short list w/equinox/outback.

I have a 16 cx5 awd gt. I want to trade it in for the turbo model. Cons that I have found with the 16 is the windshield rattle.
Lack of a/c vents for the back seat
The paint scratches way to easy
Rear bumper scratches if loading the trunk with wood etc
The computer delay with heavy throttle from a stop or slow speeds
Everything else is great. I love the suspension. Really thinking about getting the turbo model though.

Shifts before redline to keep you in the meat of your torque. The torque drops pretty quickly at 5000rpm so the tranny is forcing the upshift.
On another note. The induction noise seems pretty strong. Is it artificially piped in? That doesn't seem like Mazda to do that, but never know.

About knobs and buttons, this retired, aging baby boomer likes the oversized knobs and buttons on my 2017 Camry. I know that "enthusiasts" scorn it, but I think the Camry makes a great daily driver. (And the MSRP on the LE is only $23,070.) BTW, "Topher", the last few seconds of this video w/ the headphones on it sounded like that truck was coming through my living room.

I agree. We have a 2017 Camry XSE with the 4 cylinder. This was the best car I could find for under $30K. We actually bought ours new for under $24,000. Ours came with the Alcantara suede insert heated seats, automatic headlights, JBL stereo, wireless phone charger, rear AC vents, LED running lights and 18 inch rims. No sunroof which is just fine since we like the headroom. Amazingly nice car especially for the price. Feels and drives a lot like a Lexus if perhaps not quite as quiet. The doors close with a nice solid "thunk". Fairly quick for a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder. Decent gas mileage. Average around 29 mpg. I agree on the oversized knobs and buttons on the stereo. They are just easy to use and on the 2017 the knobs feel premium like those on a home receiver. Good quality sound. No struggling at all to use the infotainment. It boots right away and just works all the time.

I tried a tank of 100 octane gas (8.00/gal.) in my GT Reserve (2.5 l. turbo) and WOW! It gets at least another 10 HP. Now I use about 70% 91 octane gas and 30% 100 octane and you can STILL feel the difference in performance. I spank A3 Audi SUVs and the small Volvo SUVs.
"MY PRECIOUS" also has a K&N drop in air filter and when the OEM 225/55/19 tires wear out it gets a set of 245/50/19 treads for better handling.
Other than the status name WHY should you buy a Range Rover EVOQ when you could have a MAZDA CX 5 Signature or GT Reserve? The Mazda CX 5 turbos have: 1.)-> more speed 2.)-> "MUCH BETTER THAN AVERAGE" reliability (Consumer Reports) v.s. The EVOQ "MUCH WORSE THAN AVERAGE" reliability. 3.)-> great styling and - wait for it - 4.)-> HALF the price!

I'm currently trying to decide between buying a 2018 XT or 2019 CX-5 Turbo. I've done heaps of research and I'm still not certain what I'll get. I want a SUV that's fun to drive and has a sporty feel with good acceleration but I also want the ability to drive some sketchy fire roads and moderate off road trails. I love the Subaru for the off-road capability and inspiring brand with the rally history and adventurous nature. However I love the upgraded tech in the 2019 CX-5, nicer interior styling and also the automatic transmission. Such a shame the new Forester has no turbo because the CX-5 unfortunately looks less adventurous and more of a soccer-mom car compared to the Subaru. Also a shame Subaru has CVT…
