Wow, the full explanation is HUGE. This is the best post Barkley interview. It's a terrifying event, and anybody that gets passed 2 laps on pace is not only a hero, but a genius.

Avid follower of the GR (In fact, I told you this when I saw you out on the course - thanks for cheering). Dont often get to see live but usually can catch-up. I met Gary a few days before and again during the race. In both instances, he took time to say hello, ask how I was feeling, offer encouragement. I was impressed with his kindness and genuineness. When his finish occurred, I was already home, having needed to depart early to return to family. When I saw the vids popping up all over social media, I couldnt watch right away, because it was just too emotional, knowing the course and what it takes. I had to go back days later to see, and even then it was difficult. I was so heartbroken for him. When he hit the "that was easy" button before walking away, you saw that he was trying to, in a way, console everyone around - amazing.
This episode with Gary ranks as one of your best ever! You showed so much respect, professionalism. You let it play out, even when it was most toughest for him; I can imagine as friend and interviewer, that this was difficult to do, but it resulted in something really special.
Gary is a class act. Thank you for sharing yourself with all of us listeners and for the encouragement you offered me on course. As a "real person," you are most inspiring. You will get this beast done!

Well I am very late to this video (one of the few videos I've not watched yet on YT re: GR/Barkley stuff, as the story is so engaging) but hearing Garys humbleness is just amazing (not least acknowledgement of John Kelly at 24 mins)...I hope he manages to finish sometime soon! It is also telling of his character about how much he considers his family in the decisions he makes, just so refreshing to hear.

Wow! As usual anything that has to do with Gary Robbins will be super powerful and this episode of GRL lived up to it. Too bad It is not practical for me to join the live show b/c it is in the middle of the night for me but that was fun to watch even in the archived version. Can't wait for it to be uploaded to iTunes so I can take it with me on a run. I also can't wait for the documentary to come out! That will probably be super awesome!

I watched this several days ago and it left me thinking about why it was so touching. When people speak of courage in distance running, so often it is centered on the courage to get out the door or get on the starting line. Gary decision to go for it at hour 56, was courageous, because of the pain that he was forcing himself to endure with a high certainty of failure. The rawness of this decision made me tear up along with Gary his courage is uncommon. I was a collegiate runner and I came across such a couple such decisions during races and never had the courage to fail. If I'm lucky enough to every face a decision like this again, I'm going to take my cue from my new hero Gary Robbins.

What a heartbreak to miss it by 6 seconds!! Not to be presumptuous About Gary's training regimine but a race like this has many facets of training. From my experience they are physical not just strength training and doing road work but also getting used to pushing yourself with sleep and food deprivation (I used to do road work and run half and full marathons after depriving myself with food and sleep for 48 plus hours back in the day as a part of my training regimine), and the mental - making friends with your environment especially when its pitch black out as well as other sub variables that can break us that are shear mental forces, calculating time variables knowing our cadence and breaking down the 100 by required coverage per hour, and last but not least reading and understanding how to read a paper map, understanding longitude and latitude and knowing how to read a compass (you can get high quality military grade ones now for 20 bucks). He didnt make it because he got lost but hes got what it takes and proved it. I remember my mentor to train me this skill would tell me his location in the forrest at 1 am when you cant see the hand in front of your face if the light was off with longitude and lattitude parameters, the give me a map and a compass, and take me by the hand blindfolded then I had to find camp with just the compass and stars in the sky. Anyhow I dont mean to say that this was the issue but as a viewer and former enthusiast just throwing it out their. It breaks my heart but he has a lot to be proud of no doubt! He still accomplished what only a handful of people on this planet can do so I give him all my respect! I also get excited to see how this sport has evolved so mush! If I was only 21 again! Anyway, thank you for giving our sport the representation and respect it deserves !
