I need you to know that not only did you inspire me to make about a dozen of these pockets to use in my classroom with all of my pocketless dresses, but my 8 year old saw me making them and had me take him to the fabric store so he could learn to sew and make his OWN pocket. Then I wore one for pre-planning and had no less than 10 other teachers wanting pockets of their own. You have started a POCKET REVOLUTION! We will win because we will have everything we need for victory neatly contained in our pockets!
I am planning on a beginner sewing class and the first project is POCKETS! These specifically, though later I will show how to alter the pockets of a pair of pants to make them less disgraceful. (Unfortunately that trick only works on pants that have pockets wide enough to put your hand in.) Ugh!
I have a theory that the reason that women’s garments don’t have pockets is in order to prop up the handbag industry. If we had sensible pockets, ladies would not need those extremely expensive status symbols. I have it in for handbags, though, to me they are big neon signs saying “all my important things are in here; please come snatch it!”
Its scary to think this is likely true... Or someone started making bags and then the garment people where just like... "Why would they need pockets when they have such cute bags and take them everywhere?"
YES!!! I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS TO MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY FOR YEARS! I totally think it's a conspiracy/collaboration between the two industries. To counter this issue I usually wear cute book bags or tote bags instead of purses, or hunt for clothes with big pockets
and I also add the fact that women started to use pants and they became quite tight at some fashion styles, which would make pockets quite protruding and ruin the desirable silhouette
Also I've realized upon my second watch that a "pocket dumpster fire" makes it sound like a tiny cute one that I wish to cuddle, which is an amusing contrast to the ACTUAL dumpster fire that is 2020.

This has been kept as an element of many traditional Swedish regional dresses. Heavily embroidered, they're either tied around the waist or sewn onto the skirt. The direct translation would be "skirt sack" (kjolsäck).
In Norwegian national costumes they are usually a bag that isn't tied on but rather hung from the belt and detachable. Same idea, I think, though it has a top metal closure.
My girls are only 6 years and 4 years, and I recently got them some new (well, new to them) clothes and the first thing they said when they put them on, was, “Mom, they’ve got pockets!” I, of course, replied, “I know, isn’t it exciting?!” Even at their tender age they know that pockets are exciting and something to be celebrated!
This also happened to me recently. My girls are almost the same age with yours and they were counting and comparing who got more pockets... : ). And they discovered the pockets of the coat can keep their hands warm. : )
My almost 2 year old had a similar reaction when she discovered the pockets in her new dress which was a Christmas gift. She then went on a spree through the house finding all the things and stuffing them in with unbridled glee.
Exactly! I've grown up in a world where you can't even get your hand in one, much less hold phone, keys, hand sanitizer, wallet, and other important pocket things like men are supposed to fit in their pockets. I think the author of the book _Katy No-Pocket_ understood.

fun fact, the nursery rhyme 'Lucy Locket Lost Her Pocket' actually stems from these types of pockets as ribbons easily became undone during the day when working women would go about their jobs.
When I was young, my grand-maman made most of my clothes and made me a pocket like this to wear under my school uniform skirt, which had a slit finish on the side. Instead of a ribbon belt she used cotton and put a button on it. She called it a "besace". Nothing as pretty as what you made but essentially the same garment. And here we have madame Bernadette being mood for seven minutes straight. But seriously, why. Did. We. Stop. With. Pockets. Like This. History has failed us......
So HISTORY scholar here! Yes, pockets were purposely made smaller and smaller on womens clothing in the midst of womens rights and votes for women movements in the early 20th century to discourage women from carrying pamphlets and protest paraphernalia around. Pockets became political and women with pockets were making a political statement that they had the freedom to carry their own things. So when we make big pockets like this, not only are we making our lives easier, we're paying homage to our feminist sisters throughout history

I notice that you use ONE strand of thread for basting the pocket onto the cotton lining. I learned to use one strand of thread during a cloth doll making course in which the instructor explained that she learned this “technique” from her days in theatrical costume-making. Thread is spun in one direction. When we use the thread doubled, one-half of it is weakened by affecting the direction of the twist. LOVELY handwork!!!🥰

It wasn't actually fashion companies solely responsible for the shrinking of women's pockets. It mostly was done in the suffragette era to discourage women from carrying pamphlets and protest gear. So yes, pockets were removed from women's fashion by misogyny, and they are indeed a lovely symbol of feminism for that reason. We need to start an "Honour the Suffragettes" grassroots campaign - get women to make and wear tie on pockets, as a symbol to say that what the patriarchy did back then was wrong and we stand against its effects.
Ordinary handbags do me fine, the smaller the better , the less to carry not a target for theft.
My mom said that it's not necessary for us to have pockets because we have purses and I'm just over here, a tomboy, like....

It’s always lovely to see your impeccable hand sewing- and it reassures me that my hand sewing speed is not unreasonably slow. If goddess of delicate stitchwork Bernadette takes her time on her work, so can I! (And sew I can!)
😁
"If you have ever had the misfortune of binding stays by hand you will understand the quantity of pure existential shrieking behind this deceivingly tranquil presentation"
~Bernadette Banner 2020
I felt this in my soul
I'm going to need a pocket with "primarily out of spite" embroidered on it.
I'm so gonna do this. I'm tired of not having pockets and this is so practical! I could add a zipper for some security and voila!
I find the duality in the sheer elegance of this in congruence with a dumpster fire most enjoyable.
I need this for around the house now that I am living in PJs or the equivalent.
Same
The equivalent for me are leggings/yoga pants, because those hardly ever include pockets
Same here. I had just decided to make some for myself. But after seeing Bernadette's I have the feeling that they should be nice. And so... They are never going to happen 😢
So true!
Flaming dumpsters. The ultimate #2020aesthetic.
Me in the early 90s: *Fits hand and stuff in pocket*
Early 2000s: *wallet can't fit but my hand still can*
2010s: *most of my hand fits*
2020: *only lip gloss fits, and barely at that*
Lighter pockets stay though. 🔥
Things I can't fit in my regular pockets, I put them in the lighter pocket. Like keys.
@@ismata3274 it's actually a watch pocket.
@@naelyneurkopfen9741 have only seen people put their lighters in it, so assumed it was for it 😶😅😭.....🙋
2021: not even lip gloss fits
I saw some jeans with what looked to be pockets, but they were just printed on. Sometimes we don't even get pockets now. 😭
Pockets are an absolute must and whilst we're on the subject, can we all agree that pockets sewn into the waistband are vastly superior in size and structure to pockets sewn into side seams? 😂
Yes, my dresses do have pockets, but I need more! All the pockets!
I was that child growing up who carried lots and lots of rocks and treasures in her pockets, to the extent of occasionally needing to hold up her pants. 😏
I want to make my own! Thanks for the inspiration.
Bernadette, beautiful work, as per usual.
Aprons and PJ’s without pockets are useless. Love this pocket idea❣️
I read the title as *"If they can't fit clothes in our pockets, WE'LL BRING BACK FASHION AS POCKETS"*
Equally good sentiments 👍
Same lol
Somebody once told me that I looked like you, like my outfit reminded them of your aesthetic, and it is still the best compliment I have ever received.
Thank you so much for all you do! I found your channel a couple years ago and I love watching all your videos. My daughter will be 10 on Saturday and she has recently discovered the joys of sewing and wants to learn everything she can. I just showed her your channel and she promptly whipped up a pocket today based on your instructions from some random scraps she had lying around. She is so excited to watch more videos!
“Lucy locket lost her pocket”
...Finally, I understand
I'm a homemaker and I'm often tossing on an apron just for the pockets. I'll def be making one of these! I also like chatelaines.
I def think these things need to make a comeback!
When I first took up sewing (back in June) one of the first things I made with my new sewing machine was a short apron with pockets, for the purpose of having pockets when wearing some of my skirts. Now I can easily carry essentials with me when wandering around my home and don't find the item I need is at the other end of the flat because I forgot to pick it up.
I spend most of my time in 1940s and 50s style. Watching this, I think I need to make myself an apron with pockets to tie over anything I wear that does not have adequate pocket functionality! Extra challenge if I can invent one that looks office-wear appropriate...
How about something like this style? I think a dressed-up 40's half aprons would look just fine in an office. :)

If I'm not mistaken, that black dress would fall under 'fancy wear', and that apron looks absolutely darling with it.

@@warriormaiden9829 That last one is absolutely darling!
@@makeda6530 Right? I'm seriously tempted to make my own version of it. XD
@@warriormaiden9829 the last one is fabulous :D also, it looks so Jessica approved (from Jessica out of the Closet, I love her!) that I wish I could send her one for her Baking Bad endeavors
Cèzario is just the cutest thing ever lying on his little pillow. Love this idea as well! And your stitching, which is exquisite.
This gave me a much needed laugh - thank you! Also I am similarly annoyed at the lack of pockets in our clothing, even more so at the fake pockets which sow false hope by making you think there is a pocket when it's actually just 'decoration'.
“Not concerned with pick pockets” there is a minor upside to the s***show that is 2020.
"Primarily out of spite" I mean, if that isn't a life motto right there..
How would that translate into Latin? That would be a great motto for a coat of arms! :D
While I do quite like that one, I must confess that my favorite motto is the one that Rorshach's Blot gave the Lovegood family: 'Si vos can't caecus lemma per scientia, baffle 'em per bovis excrement'. 🤣🤣
I have to make a pocket that says this, and wear it where all of the clothes designers can see it.
@@fjolliff6308 *Do it.* 🤣
I remember getting my first man's tweed blazer from a resale shop and discovering the cool inner breast pocket. It was deep, discreet and secure. I've never looked back. . .
It annoyed me to no end that my school uniform growing up have either no pockets or unusably tiny pockets for girls and countless large pockets for the boys. I could see tie-on pockets becoming a trend and a symbol for feminism 😂
My pants have fake pockets. They look like normal pockets, but there's nothing there. The boys pockets are real. It's annoying.
Plus we can carry protest gear in them when we riot about yet another horrid thing some old white men have done to women and/or minorities.
@@dawnj2360 I resolved never to buy trousers that had no real pockets in them, some time ago. It does make finding suitable trousers a little more difficult, but it also eliminates the annoyance of not having pockets. And now that Ms Banner has seduced me into taking up sewing, I guess it won't be too long before I start making my own trousers and I'll be able to add as many pockets as I like, and make them useful, into the bargain.
My dad finds it hilarious anytime I gasp in shock and disappointment and yell "it doesn't have pockets" It really is a huge inconvenience
I think you should sneakily sabotage all your Dad's pockets by sewing them closed so they aren't usable XD :P
@@loftyradish6972 haha YES! Then he'll know how it feels!
Well, you know, it is the patriarchy that reduced female pocket size.. apparently because they did not want radical women to carry pamphlets about voting rights and such.
Lovely Bernadette, your work is amazing. Just a little thought: I wish you would support retailers/shops who do online business instead of Amazon. Amazon stand so not for all that we love: Quality, Beauty, Slowness and so on.
As I suffered a lot from lack of pockets during summer (in other seasons I am a hoodie person), I started to wear my roleplaying belt pouch with my summer skirts that, sadly, did not have pockets. Worked pretty well, too!
Yes! I have a bunch of canvas pocket belts with rings and grommets for chatelaines. I haven't used a purse in six years. Such freedom!
2020 is more like that Twilight Zone episode where that guy finally has the peace and quiet he wanted but then his glasses broke so he couldn't read his books
Yes! I work(ed?) in the publishing industry, and when I first saw that as a kid I thought, "So that's what Hell is." I don't expect 2021 to be better than 2020, and yet I still look forward to it being over.
Seriously, the only thing that has kept me sane this year is making music and finding Bernadette's spite-fueled sewing.
oh my glob! that is a perfect analogy.
That episode kills me. So sad.
Ohhhh yes!! That's one of the few episodes I've seen and it hurts my book loving soul to even think about. Perfect analogy.
The elegant flames of the dumpster fire are beautifully reflective of trash petals - the eligibility of said date, along with the added rift is sheer poetry. Bravo
As I have recently given up wearing pants and have been living in the multitude of long skirts I have made throughout the years for cosplay and the local renaissance faire, which foolishly don't have pockets (though I've started to rectify that), having such a lovely tie-on pocket would be the perfect accessory.
