Nerdy comment alert but just wanna give a big shout out to whomever edits and mixes the audio for this podcast. I get a few extra chuckles every episode from the cuts, Picture in Picture, or just the “Block” animation. And, unlike almost every other podcast on TH-cam I don’t have to crank my volume to hear the dialogue. Thank you for knowing how to use compression. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I think I laugh harder at those things you pointed out than the guest or Neal most of the time. The dialogue is always clever, but not necessarily laugh-out-loud funny. Probably due to the subject matter most of the time. Those edits on the other hand usually catch me off guard or I see it coming a mile away and it's like a warm blanket.
I’m hoodwinked by this pod every time. I click on when i see my favorite comedians thinking imma laugh uncontrollably the entire time, only to be 35 minutes in before i realize I’m in therapy… I’ll take it.
On the off chance either of you guys see this, Im obsessed with stand up. I re watch comedy specials all the time. I still watch What I Should Have Said Was Nothing every now and then and I watched 3 Mics a number of times during covid. Your material, much like this podcast, is therapy.
I know your comment wasn't directed to me, but I wanted to say how much I identify with what you said here. The more substantial comics (no offense to other styles, honestly some Jeselnik, Murphy, Silverman- I'll love them too) meaning the ones pulling from a more emotional experience like Birbiglia, Brennan, Pryor, Hicks, Tomlinson, Burnham, Carlin in my opinion they stick with me, I come back to the same specials and I laugh and think. It's like a meal instead of a snack. I just enjoyed seeing a common element here. Gotta mention Chappelle, Rock, Louie, Minchin, and Izzard. Wright, Dangerfield, lol. I promise there's a few I don't enjoy
Therapeutic fs. I had canceled Netflix for several months and was having a really bad mental health day; signed back up again so that I could rewatch 3 Mics that night.
Hey Mike, I watch your specials way more than once!!!! Your stories are amazing! I lol just thinking about them. And yes, I rewatch broadcast news.....'whattya do when your real life exceeds all your dreams? Keep it to yourself! OMG, the lines! and Mother...yeah Mike, ur work is timeless!
YOU two are AMAZING. Extraordinary Men. Thank you. Grateful for viewing the effects of your courage and vulnerability and friendship. SO beautiful. So beautiful.
In regard to Netflix putting a single person on the thumbnail instead of the ensemble, it's not because a star wanted sole billing. Netflix has found that people click on things more often if 1 or 2 people are on the thumbnail, and usually if they're in close up. That's why there's so many thumbnails that look like that.
Can't be effusive enough over Birbiglia and Brennan talking blocks. I felt so much of this myself. My only note would be that it's _"dissociate"_ when used in the psychological sense. A minor quibble.
Neal's camera is actually in completely sharp focus here, he just had another DMT trip and so he's slightly phased shifted from our reality and dissociating causing him to appear blurred to people on this plane of existence.
Neal "I feel the same way about slicing cake." The timing and premise of that joke, instant laugh out loud! And it was universal. I enjoyed this one. This guest was so normal, even mentioning he watched porn was normal. Neal has been threatening us with Earthlings for years, I'm too scared to watch. How do you transition from bladder cancer? Neal will show you. lmao
This guy was doing that all through the podcast, just nailing exactly the best, funniest next thought. Not just response, but expansion of the subject, in the silliest, funniest, most poignant way. Guess this Brennan dude is a guy to watch.
It's good to know that Chris hasn't forgotten what made me a fan of his. I follow Chris and Yannis to this day because of History Hyenas even though I mostly understand that they have moved on to bigger and gayer things and won't be better going forward.
Neal, you are a funny comedian that used to struggle with energy and emotions and feeling different in so many ways, which made you depressed. Now, you are a funny comedian who has spiritually awakened and sees so much further and beyond this reality. If your fans can’t evolve with you, then that’s fine. Let them leave if they need you being sad. You can’t lower your vibration to meet people who want it to be lower. That’s nuts! By the way, the sooner you really get in touch with yourself as a highly sensitive Empath, the better because that is the final key for you. I highly recommend taking my Empath quiz as it will let you know where you are in the Empath Spectrum because we’re not all created equally. I’m an off the charts Psychic Physical Empath, I feel in my body what others feel, exactly how they feel it. We are rare, you’re not like me, but I would guess right bellow that mark, processing and feeling more on the energetic and emotional levels. You’re definitely an Empath, bet many of the questions for Autistism are similar to Empaths 🤣. Wish more mainstream medicine would get with the program. My website is the same name as my channel and it has a quiz that will tell you where you fall on the Empath Spectrum. It’s free and takes 10 min. 💜💜💜 Infiniti PS If you ever want to connect about this, or with me or have a podcast about being an Empath, please reach out.
I love that you guys change the set DRAMATICALLY every show and it’s never mentioned at all. Except for Seth. Btw. The quick visual cuts are so perfect. It’s fine audible only, but those quick cuts are sprinkled just enough that rewatching feels like a bonus fry
This was GREAT! You are two of my top twenty comics. You are both ICONIC. I must disagree with, 'Whats the worst that could happen?' Well - , PS Is that a very weird sandwich next to you, no plate, no napkin?? Thanks for the laughs, you over delivered! STICK WITH IT!
Call me crazy but I’ve watched Richard Pryor’s stand up special in Long Beach like 10 times over the years. I’m 65, so, I also listen to jazz from the ‘50’s and rewatch good movies.
I find it intensely interesting to hear two comics crack each other up. The only thing better is to hear two comics in group therapy compare neuroses while occasionally cracking each other up. I could have been a GREAT comic but my life growing up just didn't screw me up enough.
NGL I need to see these two in the same room because I kinda get them mixed up in my head sometimes. I mean their personalities are quite different but they totally occupy the top 2 positions for 'dude comedians who make talking about feelings cool.'
Finally someone who knows why I always bought my daughter cupcake cakes for her birthday. None of that little piece, corner, roses picky ass bullshit! Its all getting shotgunned down your gullet, jeez.
NUMMI Stands for New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. it was Toyota and GM 's shared plant. That was a great podcast but very frustrating! Edit: The NUMMI one was frustrating, not this one!
I literally shrilled out loud, in my open garage at 11:17pm on a Thursday night, when i closed the "what is pickleball" video and saw that Mike Birbiglia was on this show.
I think the youngest kid feels pressure to not let people down because they are constantly compared to their older more capable siblings. It's hard to remember that we are not having the first child relationship with all our subsequent children.
1:12:10 My friend's girlfriend cheated on him, so he dumped her. The last time they spoke, she criticized the car he drove. Right after that, he traded in his sensible, affordable car and bought a luxury car he really couldn't afford. Long story short, he ended up ruining his credit and the bank took his car all because of an earworm his cheating girlfriend implanted before she left.
I loved Half Baked. Loved it. At the time. In the moment. I even enjoyed [Walk] Hard Rain that week too. Can we get a cult recut of Half Baked already? Is there one I don't know about? Where is it? As a side note, I want to see Neal and Harland do something, but I don't think Harland on Blocks is a thing that can happen. Neal on Harland Highway would be unexpectedly funny.
gasp Neal is on the right! My whole world is askew! Up is down! Yes means no! Neal's camera is also slightly out of focus. It's an artistic statement. Neal is living the dream, and Mike Birbiglia is focused reality. Whatever that means...

Gotta crank the volume for that theme music tho
this and the replies seem fake. who calls a podcast diologue?

Neal is literally healing the world and whomever decides to click on these videos. National treasure.
I’m hoodwinked by this pod every time. I click on when i see my favorite comedians thinking imma laugh uncontrollably the entire time, only to be 35 minutes in before i realize I’m in therapy… I’ll take it.
plus no $150.oo per session,
or, having to pass the basket
in some sketchy basement full of even sketchier people..
"It never gets better" a reassuring phrase to read at the start of the podcast
I don’t know that I’ve ever been so certain that I’ve ever heard an intensely honest conversation. Thank you both.
What a great episode. Mike is the perfect guest for this pod.
On the off chance either of you guys see this, Im obsessed with stand up. I re watch comedy specials all the time. I still watch What I Should Have Said Was Nothing every now and then and I watched 3 Mics a number of times during covid. Your material, much like this podcast, is therapy.

"Take back our streets" was an amazing pull and legitimately got me
Broadcast News was one of the smartest, funniest and most prescient films of the 80s. I love hearing it get some well-deserved recognition today.
53:24 - 'unable to live in the present', no 'ding'😋 I imagined it in my head and the scrolling letters, so it's like it happened
53:55 that advice is what I am currently trying out/making my way over to. Nice to hear its working for Mike, who I admire immensely
"People don't need user reviews..." Perfectly stated.
Another excellent episode. Thanks Neal and Mike.
In place of a better business bureau complaint, people leave their reviews on someone by filing a good ol’ restraining order…
I LOVE MIKE!! happy to see him here, thank you for inviting hiiim
I freaking love these guys!!!
That little like tag "Bat at accepting compliments" was so perfect.
i really appreciate how you've chosen so many clinical psychology comedians to help you through your struggles.
Love Mike!!!!! Thanks for the great interview!!!!
Mike is prime blocks material
Mike is really the king of comedy specials. They're always so good.
I love Mike birbibliography
YOU two are AMAZING. Extraordinary Men. Thank you. Grateful for viewing the effects of your courage and vulnerability and friendship. SO beautiful. So beautiful.
What a likeable guy. So comfortable talk between Neal and Mike here. Great listen.
That ending was priceless 😂 I never get tired of that ding lol
The last block of "bad at accepting compliments" was only one of the times I laughed out loud at this great interview.
The best part of this pod are Mike’s notes on the bulletin board. I just want to hear about “my first funeral” or “coffee inflation”.
Haaa! I wouldn't have noticed that on my own!
My favorite episode so far! Love the last block at the end.
I audibly said OH MY GOD when I saw the guest 🙌🏾🙌🏾

I don't know if you heard about the take back our streets initiative but....
You are killing it Neal, shits poppin off.
This is a good'n.
*They're ALL good ones,* but this one is really really good.. 👍😤👍
Mike is a freaking legend one of my favorite comedians ever love his style of comedy always have. My biggest fear is whales. Lmmfao
Yes re: the audio. Both of these great comedians have distinct vocal characteristics that make listening much easier for me than other podcasts.
Neal's camera is actually in completely sharp focus here, he just had another DMT trip and so he's slightly phased shifted from our reality and dissociating causing him to appear blurred to people on this plane of existence.
He said it's like white noise/snow on a tv. Like you're transmitting, but no signal is coming in to your mind's antenna.
One of the best pod casts channels about the mental nuts and bolts of comedians, with Neil, called Blocks… on the entire interweb….
I am grateful for this podcast. PS Watcher of Broadcast News

The show is always great, but I really like the room where this is shot.
"Theese are my Shoes " Always good to see you.
Truly creative storytellers of any kind are fascinating.
Mike's storytelling is the bestest ever ever. I gotta get me some short sleeve shirts man! Emulate your heroes right Chloe?
Isn't Spalding Gray the precursor to all these reflective poscasts?
I LOVE Mike Birbiglia❤❤
“Plan for the worst; hope for
The best.” I think my brain was maybe meant for comedy!😂
Very excited to hear that Old Man and the Pool is going to come out on a thing! I was hoping it would.
It’s the algorithm we all see different pictures on Netflix it’s outrageous
@1:17:04Just a correction… NUMMI was the place… the Japanese word for continuous self improvement is kaizen.
Fantastic episode!
I always want more stand up!!!
Supporting Neal
Was familiar with *MikeB but NOW I will intentionally watch him!
🎉
8:04 the best jokes are sadness. But; love that Neal does not need to Be the hero (said with luv) just human. Not just me. 😊

Lol came here to say that. His pod "Working It Out" is excellent, and lately he's been posting full eps on his channel 😊

I like this set.

I love your clips spliced in
That was comfort food. Two funny young old men.
"life well lived" shakespeare question at about 53 mins is basically the twin brother writers in the movie Adaptation
Is that are Mike Birbiglia skate deck in the background!? How do I get one?
"The instinct is this **twitch**"
Right after Mike demonstrated the "Mr. Rogers" method of negotiation. These two are an unintentional Comedy duo.
I find it intensely interesting to hear two comics crack each other up. The only thing better is to hear two comics in group therapy compare neuroses while occasionally cracking each other up. I could have been a GREAT comic but my life growing up just didn't screw me up enough.

i love this
great podcast
Neal with the block buzzer beater 💯
I feel like out of focus neal is a nice lil irony because he's so sharp
A really endearing interview. Corny to say but some real vulnerability's expressed on this ep. Just some real shit.
Birbigs is a legend
Wait, who's podcast is this?
Ive rewatched bill burr and chad Daniels so much over the years ive lost count.

Mike birbigliography 😂

When’s the Jimmy Carr episode?
