  • Final Presentation - Kawasaki Robot Palletizing Process
This is a Kawasaki ZZX130L Robotic Arm capable of picking up nearly 300kg and throwing it through a brick wall. What you see here is an end effector (the aluminum part) that my team designed to sense how many pallets were on a stack of pallets, to pick up the top on and deliver it to a position on a conveyor system, then to turn over and pick up eight 5-gallon buckets full of liquid and then to stack them in two layers of four on the pallet before telling the pallet to go on its merry way so that the process can be repeated ad infinitum. It does all of this in less than 90 seconds per cycle and that is with only minimal optimization. The bulk of the project consisted of commissioning these donated robots with very little extant literature, designing the end effector, learning to communicate with the Robot Controller via proprietary MatLab interface that we designed, figuring out a method of communication with and actuation the Pneumatic Valve/ Pneumatic Rotary Actuator, and then the design/ integration of a Blue Tooth Sonic Sensor/ Inertial Measuring Unit to let us know not only how many pallets there were on the stack but the Kinematic Forces involved in the process in general. It was a lot to do in 16 weeks. We are exhausted.

I absolutely love when a machine´s movements seem so organic instead of mechanized. Congratulations :)

if you look hard enough when it picks up the home depot can thing you'll see it starts moving before its picked up

This is a decent video , but the robot's tasks are similar to what I had to program for just a class project for introduction to robotics. A senior capstone project could have shown a broader application of the lab's available equipment such as using the conveyor system, the other robots to assemble the buckets before being palletized, etc. Still this was a good project.

They are quite expensive, but it is not uncommon for them to be donated to universities.
