Maybe it’s a genetic thing?

Not much to talk about. The grigri caught the fall. If you have used a grigri for a few thousand belays and have caught thousands of falls like these two you would know how they work. There is nothing to discuss. If the grigri completely explodes and fails, you holding the rope won't stop the fall. He won't address a non issue. If the gri gri failed and didn't lock that would be an issue worth discussing. Try lead rope soloing with a grigri. Its completing hands free and they lock up.
@twinmike1 it is possible to fail especially if the brake rope is above the grigri like it was when he let go. The manufacturers say to never let go of the brake rope no matter the circumstances for a reason. There is even a video on TH-cam of a guy testing when the grigri fails so it's very important for belayers to know this
@twinmike1 "its vompletely hands free and it holds" You just proved that you have never attended a belaying course on your life. Number fucking 1 rule is that you ALWAYS hold the braking side because there have been many cases where the grigri fails to lock up

What I am saying is there are lots of advanced techniques that use the grigri and are not in the manual. Definitely not indorsed by Petzl. Have you lead rope soloed with the grigri? Did it lock when you fell ? ? It does when I fall.

We both use special climbing shoes (aka climbing shoes). But yes, the elite climber was able to wear his approach shoes on the warmup
