    At 24:00 he said that he feels at home in most places, except America, London, some Nordic countries and... Germany! Neuhaus said that every artist has Italy as a second fatherland... Richter said at 26:10 that he is half German, half Russian, and can have the best of these two worlds, as he had immense knowledge of both Russian and German culture... while he certainly was in love with French Art (and as we can see here, also with French wine!)
    Thanks for posting this wonderful rare interview!

    This is deeply moving... one of the biggest treasures I ever found on youtube. Thank you very much for posting! Richter: What an amazing artist, what a humble human being. I saw one of Richter's last concerts in Germany at age 13, leaving an enormous impression on me. Getting him to "know" so personally through this video is just magical...

    Given his monumental artistry Richter always retained a humble charm and simplicity of character. He was a devoted servant to what he perceived as musical truth in performance and could easily discern between bogus posturing and musical integrity in other performers.
    A much missed giant.

    Wow! I am impressed with this man! He is half drunk and still has wise things to say to all of us. He is "Himself", and does not care about what you or I may think. Kind, warm, simple and genial.... Who cares if we are sober, vegan or vegetarian if we have nothing worth to say? Love this guy. He is the model of imperfect Humanity at its best!

      Guy is you. It's a strange familiarity to call the musician who is so respectful and kind towards his listeners in such a way. If you d only know that he didn't visit Armenia ever after such an attitude and called Armenian composer Babajanian as lazy but talented and so on, understand?

    I saw this beautiful Richter Portrait already in the 1970´s or early 80´s I am not quite sure but a long period before the Monsaingeon 'enigma'. Very interesting what he said about Mozart, pretty subjective but true: ' Ich habe doch den Schlüssel zu Mozart noch nicht gefunden, alles was er schreibt, ist schrecklich schwer, bei Haydn leicht!'
    dann sagte er sinngemäß noch:' was ist das mit Mozart? [hält inne], keine Antwort'
    Mozart was in fact a enigma for Richter but he didnt play him that bad!

    Mozart is the most difficult composer to play - like he said. But it´s not only because of the difficulties to find a sense for his works - it´s also the deep respect for them that make them hard to play. You´ll always think: Do I torture him right now? Is this the right Interpretation? And this bastard doesn´t give you any hints - most of the time.

    • @Viktorvelat95
      @Viktorvelat95 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +anonymusum I have an exact opinion of Beethoven and I find Mozart the second hardest composer to play,after Ludwig

    • @anonymusum
      @anonymusum 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nikita Stepanenko I was not talking about technical difficulties. I meant the problems in finding a right interpretation at all. In this issue Beethoven is very clear and obvious, Mozart is just the opposite - mostly.

    • @Viktorvelat95
      @Viktorvelat95 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      anonymusum beethoven's music is very UNclear and certainly not obvious at all... how can you say that?! his piano sonatas are like symphonies for piano, they can be played so many ways, there are too many details that may be solved differently, but still beautifully, unlike major part of Mozart's works, especially his works in major keys are usually light, joyful, smiling, sunshining ( I prefer mozart's dark and minor key pieces such as his requiem, piano concerti c minor and d minor, a minor and c minor sonata or fantasy in c minor)

    • @anonymusum
      @anonymusum 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nikita Stepanenko Ok, ok - I am wrong and Richter is wrong as well and all my professors at the conservatory were wrong and ... all wrong and you are right.

      @Viktorvelat95 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      anonymusum how can you be so sure about any composer that interpretation of his music is very clear and obvious?! I told you that I think that finding a correct interpretation in Beethoven's works is the hardest thing ever and Mozart's works are second hardest to me personally...

    Richter's german is amazingly good, his choice of words is very precise, better than many Germans. And he seems to understand the german of the interviewer. I never saw him so serene, friendly and open. Generally he looks quite serious, almost gloomy.
    A pity that the interviewer did not do a better job. He does not really seem up to the task, luckily Richter was in a good mood and did his best to communicate some of his ideas. Maybe the alcohol.

      Auf mich als Deutscher wirkt er eher russisch, obwohl er auch deutsche Wurzeln hat und die Sprache sehr gut spricht, wenn auch mit russischem Akzent. Ich kenne die russische Mentalität recht gut, weil ich russische Lehrer hatte und mit mehreren russischen Kollegen zusammenarbeite. Svjatoslav Richter ist für mich nicht so sehr "Deutscher" oder "Russe", sondern vor allem Svjatoslav Richter.
      Dass ich Richter zweimal live hören durfte, betrachte ich als großes Glück. Das waren unglaubliche Offenbarungen und welche Rolle spielt dann noch die Herkunft?
      Interessant finde ich auch, dass sein Lehrer Heinrich Neuhaus ebenso vielfältige Wurzeln hatte. Aber diese sind bei zahlreichen Künstlern festzustellen, die vordergründig als Russen betrachtet werden. Dies gilt um so mehr, wenn man die Lebenläufe ihrer Lehrer mit einbezieht.

    I get itchy from those people who start every single sentence with "but....". Or 'aber', for that matter. Argumentative, not exploratory or curious.

    Beings like S. Richter never fail to fascinate me. He appears to be so different when he sits and play than when he talks.
    The way he sits naturally in front of the piano, in what seems to be a man being in his most natural state, gently but firmly turns the pages and then with a brilliant energy start playing the music, bringing forth the most beautiful tone. All while looking stern sometimes, other times genuinely playful like the way a little baby would play with their toy. It’s amazing.

    Est-il possible d'avoir la traduction en anglais ? En cliquant sur l'adresse donnée ci-dessus, on n'obtient que du russe... Où alors je ne sais comment faire !
