You do not need to make the GL.iNet router first - you simply open the ports/port forwarding on your main router to the GL.iNet. I have five of these in various locations, acting both as VPN servers (WIFI, LAN, & VLANs) and VPN clients
I built a site-to-site routed VPN between my winter residence in Mexico and my summer residence in the USA on DD-WRT and OpenVPN many years ago. That was a challenge! Now I am thinking about replacing that system with GL iNET router and or gateway. While in Mexico we connect to the ISP's router via WiFi to get significantly faster speed. But, when we need VPN services we connect to the VPN router which is daisy chained to the ISP's router by simply changing what SSID I connect to in Mexico. Changing to WireGuard should improve speed over OpenVPN. If I need to bypass VPN services, how could I do that with a GL iNET system? In my existing system speed was the usual reason to bypass VPN services. But, some websites - like Home Depot and WalMart will redirect me to stores where I am not. Specifically, what fails if the GL iNET device is NOT directly connected to the Internet? Would Port Forwarding get around it? Or, is this a difference between VPN Server and VPN Client?
Thanks for sharing your experience with setting up a site-to-site VPN! It sounds like you've really optimized your setup over the years. Switching to a GL iNET router and using WireGuard for improved speed sounds like a great idea. To bypass VPN services with a GL iNET system, you can use VPN Policy settings to create rules that allow certain traffic to bypass the VPN . This can be done through the LuCi interface by setting up firewall rules . Port forwarding might not be the best solution for bypassing VPN services, as it's typically used for directing incoming traffic to a specific device on your network. The issue with the GL iNET device not being directly connected to the Internet could be due to incorrect configuration or a firmware issue . Ensuring that the device is properly configured and updated can help resolve this Would you like more detailed steps on setting up VPN bypass rules on your GL iNET router?
Great question! If you’ve set up your VPN server at home and you’re connecting directly to your ISP, you can connect a client to it by following these steps: Install a VPN client: Install a VPN client on the device you want to connect to the VPN server. There are many free and paid VPN clients available. Configure the VPN client: You’ll need to enter the public IP address of your home network (provided by your ISP) and the credentials you set up for your VPN server. Connect: Once everything is set up, you can connect to your VPN server. All your internet traffic from the client device will now be routed through your home network. Remember, your home network’s public IP address can change if your ISP uses dynamic IP addresses, so you might need to update the IP address in your VPN client from time to time. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. VPN
@@Jake-Daleyno this is out my league . My mom has the nord VPN but when I test it in only works on on websites what’s my ip , the rest show my true IP. I was hoping to install hotspot shield on this machine but I don’t understand any of this
VPN client - you are connecting to another services like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Windscribe and so on others. VPN Server - you are making your own VPN server from your router, from your Home
A VPN server is the one you connect to via VPN, and a VPN client is how you connect to a VPN server. For example, you can use the Wireguard client on Windows, Mac, iOS, etc., to connect to a VPN server (GL.iNet or any other VPN server). I use GL.iNet router in VPN client mode with a specific WIFI (VLAN) that connects to a GL.iNET VPN router in another location/country. I also use VPN clients on mobile devices to connect to VPN servers.

Why do the GL iNET travel routers not need to connect directly to the ISP?

Interesting! I plugged it into my router and made it work through port forwarding. How is that possible?
Port 445?
That's they way to make it work when you put the GL.iNet behind your main / ISP's router
So if I connect directly to my ISP as a server. How do I connect the client to the server at home?
