How is it that the IRS knows exactly who I am when I owe them money, but have to prove who I am to the government for everything else?

Funny you should mention the IRS in this connection. I have not actually had issues proving myself to them, but in spring 2023, my state made me produce my passport or birth certificate, my license, my Social Security Card, a utility bill in my name at my taxpaying address, and something from my bank showing the last 4 digits of my direct deposit account before they would send me my 2022 tax refund. These were more documents than they required when I got my Real ID a few months later.

This isn't about protecting fraud or you. It's about post 9/11 government tyrants doing what they do.
The official purposes covered by the Act and regulation are:
      Accessing certain federal facilities;
Boarding Federally regulated commercial aircraft; and
      Entering nuclear power plants.
From the DHS website, this nonsense was passed almost 20 years ago.

If the government actually cares about tracking you, trust me, not having a real id isn't going to keep you hidden. There's a million ways you're already being tracked. You drive a car and ever passed a toll? Even without something like EZ Pass, they know you crossed the toll. Ever used a credit card? Have a cell phone (not even a smart phone)? With a cell phone, you can be pinpointed down to 15 feet. Again, this is assuming you're someone to government actually wants to track, like if you're doing nefarious stuff!

They interconnect the DMVs for all the states so the state with the worst security puts everyone's data at risk. If you ever had a legal name change, the documentation burden is more difficult. They require high resolution photos for facial recognition, which has repeatedly been proven to be flawed. Therefore voting with an ID requires that the state or federal government pay for it otherwise it is prohibiting someone from fulfilling their civil duty and while I'm sure there are a few votes that gets through the cracks denying an American citizen their right and civil obligation is against our constitution before the potential of an illegal vote is. Considering that each basic ID for those without cost at least $10 to the government that's millions of dollars for each state just for those that don't have a basic ID to be able to vote. You've always had to have a ID to travel. A regular state-issued drivers license or state ID (or passport) was always mandatory for flight (or, really, any type of travel).
Real ID is just an updated version of a driver's license. It's not any kind of big conspiracy. It's just an ID that's more difficult to fake/forge. When I renewed my state-issued driver's license a little over a year ago, I just got the Real ID. It cost like $30 and it's exactly the same process as getting a "regular" driver's license.

We're updating an optional document to travel: "I DESPISE MY COUNTRY"
I'll take "entitled and living in a bubble" for 400, Alex

Now kids. The only issue is anyone who has been married and divorced
Women that is. Not only do you need your birth certificate, ss card, but also your divorce papers . Now, if will affect anyone woman who married in another state than where they live.
Men. Don't have this issue unless they changed their names

This is not an extra document, it's you're drivers license. The only visual difference is the gold star on it.
Edit: Oh it's not the same everywhere.

@3DJapan... Again! If the only difference was "the star" you would not be required to present additional documents.
      Enough said.

Usa is so behind in technology. Why do we need to physically go to DMV to apply for Real ID when our files are already online?

The federal government should issue the Passport Cards (rather than books) to all U.S. citizens and use them for traveling.

They’ve been “implementing” this for over 20 years now. There’s no reason to believe they’re not going to extend the date yet again when we get close to the deadline.

TSA requires "real ID compliant driver's licenses." The state must comply. In Utah they add a gold star.

Then you will not be able to fly domestically unless you have a passport or Global Entry card.
