I think it's important to add that the common names refer to a rich cultural heritage that has an intimate knowledge of the different subspecies or varietals of any given species of agave. They may be the same species, but they can vary wildly in the same way that domesticated dogs are the same species, but have very different phenotypical expressions. Great video!

Hey! Great point, thanks for commenting. Absolutely, and it can get wildly confusing 😆 Salud!

I thought that the Maguey Tobalá is known under the scientific name of Agave Potatorum, while Maguey Papalomé/Papalometl is known under Agave Cupreata (in the widest sense), but now you say that they are all the same? Can you help me understand this better?

@@alphawezen123 that’s a great question! Yes, depending on the region and community, the common names might be shared for the cupreata in parts of Guerrero, Michoacan, Puebla and Oaxaca.
Papalome or papalometl is Nahuatl for papalo- butterfly metl-maguey
Tobala is Zapotec - Toba is maguey an la for el or liberty
Cupreata and potatorum are very similar - hence they often times share a common name. Cupreata for example has other common names like chato, and cimarrón, papalote, hoja ancha…
PLUS in Oaxaca other agave have been discovered like Seemanniana (tobala) which was for a long time thought to be potatorum.
Beautifully confusing. But the purpose of the video is to show the important significance common names have when considering region and community.
      Hope that helped! 🤔
