    Yes the verb is foot switchable on the rectoverb. But the extra footswitch isnt included. But inexpensive to get a second footswitch.

  • @PinchTune
    @PinchTune 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there no jack in the reverb circuit in the back of the amp like on the Lonestar? Out of the box, on the Lonestar, the Reverb is not footswitchable. But there is a little jack in the back that allows it to be switched on and off if you use a aftermarket pedal. I'm wondering of the ROV25 is like that or if there is SIMPLY no option to turn it off except the knobs.

    the mid is turned down on the mesa at 3:24 and it shouldn't be. That explains the sound difference there. It's corrected at 3:55 and there you go.

    The versatility/complexity of the Recto hurts it here. It seems like you couldn't get a bad tone out of the Friedman if you tried, but there are usually plenty of "unsweet spots" on a Mesa if it's not dialed in to a tee.

    • @geetarplyr1
      @geetarplyr1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not so much with the Rectoverb 25. It's hard to get a bad sound out of it. I had one and regret selling it.

    • @mikedenkinger9570

      Agree. Mesas are complicated for those that don't like to monkey around with them to get the sounds that they want. The Friedman does sound like some of the sweetest modded Marshalls I've ever heard. I think the Soldano 30 beats both but I ain't got the coin for that rig....
      I completely disagree with some of the comments about Mesa's not being able to "do the Marshall thing". I have a buddy that has been playing a Tremoverb (90's?) and it CAN do the JCM900 hyper midrange boosted thing with the orange channel, no problem. And it has a whole two other worlds of Fender-ish cleans and crushingly thick distortion (almost as industrial-nasty as a Dual Rec). You do have to dial out the bass as it gets louder though when it starts clipping. It has to be one of the loudest 100w amps I've ever played. If I had it, I'd have one of those new Boss Waza attenuators on it to keep from losing my hearing.
      That being said, I can't say exactly the same thing for the Rectoverb 25. But do you want your Mesa to imitate someone else's amp? I don't. I like the crushing American distortion more than the singy-stingy midrange British overdrive. Plus you can get a Marshall/Orange/Hiwatt-style AIB pedal (Wampler Plexidrive/Pinnacle, Plimsoul,etc..) and run it in the clean channel if that's what you have to have when you're not shaking the house with the thick Mesa grind.....

      Ive learned these mini amps the best way to run them is in a hybrid setup. using a loadbox and IRS so you can crank the amp to the max then insert the amp into an axe fx or a helix to use in place of an amp block and use impulse responses in place of the cab blocks and setup effects like normal within the units and send it to front of house and FRFR amps on stage (which definitely get band volume) like a laney lfr212

    I had a Runt 20 last year but gave it up...sounded thin to me...but with no work it was great in the mix. As fate would have it, a Rectoverb 25 is being delivered to me tomorrow, but in this video the Runt 20 sounded WAY better, to my ear! Here's hoping I don't ultimately trade the Rectoverb away to get back to the Runt 20 I traded away in 2018, to get what I thought I was getting in the Rectoverb! :-)

    • @TVoltG
      @TVoltG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's the verdict Fraser?

    • @fsthomson
      @fsthomson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TVoltG It's been a while since I've had the Runt 20 (I sold the Runt in early 2018). After watching this video again just now, the Friedman still sounds better to me. But here at home, the Recto-Verb sounds better than I remember the Runt 20 sounding. The Mesa sounds a little thinner on the crunch channel than I was expecting, but not to the same extent as the Runt did. Mind you, as I said before, the Runt cut through the mix really well---in the mix, I never missed those lows. I haven't gigged with the Mesa, but I'll bet I'd have the same observation regarding the mix, with maybe a little more power bleeding into the low end on the Mesa. All that said, on its own the Mesa sounds better to me, to the best of my recollection. The clean channel DEFINITELY has a broader range on the Mesa, and sounds better to me when I have it set the way I like, but the simplicity of the Runt's clean channel is a thing of beauty if it works for you. The Mesa's crunch brings that 'American' style of overdrive that I personally like. But even if that's not your thing, the fact that the Mesa has 10--25W and Vintage-Modern voicing switches on each channel yields a LOT of flexibility, without making it too over-complicated like the Mesa Heartbreaker, for example (though the Mesa Heartbreaker is still the best-sounding amp I ever owned, in my opinion). So probably the sad truth is that each player really needs to play them both to know for sure what they prefer...but for me the Mesa was easier to dial in to where I wanted it to be, on both the clean and overdriven channels. I'm happy to be a Mesa player again!

    • @PinchTune
      @PinchTune 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fsthomson Thanks for that. I'm busy trying to choose between the two. I'm a bit of a MESA fan having owned a Lonestar for many years. I'm heavily considering the Friedman... but the JJ Jr. to be exact. I do like that the MESA has onboard Reverb. To me that's a big plus because I use Reverb on my cleans 95% of the time. However, it needs to be footswitchable like it is on my Lonestar. I mean, out of the box with the included footswitch you can't switch it off, but with a different pedal, using the jack on the back, you can. It's been 3 months since your reply and I take it you're still happy with the ROV?

      I don't the Mesa was EQ'ed right or in the best mode. I think it should have been in vintage mode with comparable EQ settings set by ear. I've played the Rectoverb 25 for several years and you can get way better tones out of it than what was used in this video.

    • @devinponder6072
      @devinponder6072 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wadereynoldsgm You're right. And it needed more trebble. Seems like all his vids he's seems to prefer a muddy tone on his Mesa. I have a Rectoverb and a 100 watt Dual Rec Reborn. They easily can sound WAY brighter than he sets his up.

    • @mikedenkinger9570
      @mikedenkinger9570 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The EQ isn't set right in this video on the Mesa. Mesas take far more time and patience to dial in. When to go through this process to find a tone that is awesome, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what amazing can do versus a Marshall.
      I tend to keep notes on all my EQ settings when I'm fiddling with my Rectoverb 25. Some players are gonna think that this is something they don't want to deal with. However come I can tell you it's very rewarding and speaks to how flexible the amp is that you can set it in so many different ways and get so many different sounds.

    Thank you for a very good showing of what these two amps can deliver. Too often these videos have someone playing with too much gain, and nothing more. Opening the video with clean tones shows everything you would need to compare. I agree with every comment so far, the Friedman is significantly better, it's not even close. The Mesa sounds muddy and cheap in comparison.

    The voicing of rectoverb is more adjusted to metal in my believe. Metal upper highs, slightly higher mid and punchier low mid with solid low end. More forgiving and modern voiced.
    Friedman runt is more classical, quite linear where the high end cuts through in a more punishing, unforgiving, cleaner voice.
    Hard to say who's better, but rectoverb might be slightly more rewarding, just from the feel the amp gives back during playing it.

    • @mikedenkinger9570
      @mikedenkinger9570 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely agree. I like the Friedman when the riffs were were played with the gain halfway up. As with Marshall's, the low end was tighter and more focused than the Mesa.
      However, as the gain gets higher, the Mesa starts to get its thick low-midrange grind on and starts to show how much wider its frequency range and dynamic response is than the Friedman.
      The Mesa just takes far more time and Slightly smaller incremental adjustments to get the tone then you would by cranking the knobs on a Marshall, Fender or Friedman. While I am not an electronics engineer, I suspect that the pot values are higher on the Mesa than those other brands. I suspect this is why you always start with all the knobs at noon and make very tiny incremental adjustments just so that you get exact plea what I suspect this is why you always start with all the knobs at noon and make very tiny incremental adjustments just so that you get exactly what you want for your tone.
      What's the Mesa, you have to approach it as if you are using a scalpel to make surgically precise adjustments, rather than using a butter knife to spread something on toast rather than using a butter knife to spread something on toast (ie. Every other brand of amplifier). As a Mesa and Fender Amp owner, I approach each amplifier with this mentality when dialing in sounds.

  • @sbonamassa
    @sbonamassa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    2 different styles of anp designs here. You are comparing apples to oranges. Mesa is all about high gain, the Friedman is just another Marshall / Vox copy which in reality is a fender copy. The Friedman sounds like everything I don’t like about British amps, but there is a huge market for that. The Mesa is for finding YOUR tone. If you are trying to compare 2 low wattage amps, you are in two separate markets here.

    • @voided76
      @voided76 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure you're correct. The mesa has a lot going for it on the clean/pushed channel and the vintage high gain.
      it's achingly clean if that's what you're after. it's just there is a lot of room in the tonality of the amp as opposed to the friedman.
      They're pitting channels that I wouldn't really care to compare on those two amps for more than 1 riff test.
