"...no one in the while world can do what I've done. The work can wait 50 years if need be, and it still won't be antiquated." Thus spake Vermeulen about this unique, almost trance-like music, which is very tightly organized in its overall structure. Thanks so much for posting, ESPECIALLY with the score (I remember seeing an older edition in the library of the U. of Cincinnati; such a pleasure to see it posted here). I'd only question your use of the term "Roy Harris-like ecstasy..." , which I think sells this fascinating work very short. LR
These Dutch composers are indeed something unique. I was not familiar with Matthijs Vermeulen before. I have listened to first and third symphony so far but they did not impress me very much. This one, however, is a true masterpiece. Vermeulen prefers long unchanged atmospheres and it often takes quite a long time before there is any significant change of orchestration or pace.
Thank you for sharing this awesome music! Personally I'm a fan of Vermeulen, and I found his works really amazing! Yet I've searched for his works on the Internet for weeks but I didn't find much. Might be a bit bothering to you, but could you send his scores to me? I'm in quite urgent need of them. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you once more :)
Thank you for this! I first heard of Vermeulen while hanging out in the park one night when I was in my early 20's. And I do believe it was this same piece. I've tried looking up the name many times and was not able to find anything because I thought I heard the DJ say “Mathias Vermuden” I recently was able to find him when I accidentally misspelled the way I thought it was spelled and something turned up. Question, where can I get a copy of the score? I’d like to transcribe this into notation software.
I posted his Symphonies No. 1, 2, and 3 and hope 5, 6 and 7 to add. On my channel you can find Chamber music, his Cello Sonata, Violin Sonata, String Quartet and several songs. The songs I particularly like.
It's difficult for me to listen to the whole 'short' symphony in one sitting. But I find almost every passage I dive into utterly fascinating!

It figures that I stumble across a work that calls for an Ab clarinet on accident rather than any of the times I've specifically searched for them.

One of the greatest symphonic masterpieces of the 20th century, along side works as K.A. Hartmann 7th.
Thanks for sharing this unknown masterpiece!

Cool, thanks for sharing!
Never heard about this composer, which other works by him should I check next?

Wow! I didn't expect C Major at the end...
The C is the central pitch of this symphony.
the 7th Symphony has a similar kind of resolution, albeit less triumphant!
Can you upload Hanson’s Merry Mount Suite?
Wow!
