I am from Modesto and remembered going to work in Stockton in 1984, I was young and did not travel alot so driving through Stockton made me feel like I was in LA...the downtown was full of people walking around and shopping, there was no homeless people that I saw during those times....I remembered eating at an A&W and I never ever tasted burgers like that anymore, I dreamed of those burgers in downtown Stockton. It was a nice looking downtown way back
@@jbenziggy Yes, We were in LA last December and the place looks like a third world shanty town. It sad to see it like that. Jeff there are couple of movies I'm sure you have heard of called escape from LA and escape from New York with Kurt Russell in both of them, I think America is going to look like what is portrayed in those movies in a very short order.
You can see and Feel it for certain in an area One would have always felt would be kept up ... "The Miracle Mile shopping"....Stockton is becoming the world's largest multicultural Sustainable GHETTO.....& If your Not careful in HOW you read that ..You may we'll feel that it's not all that bad🤦🤷

It was so interesting seeing all the WWII ships in mothballs along the Delta. Have you been there? I was around 14 yrs old when I visited it. I've been neglecting this channel for months because I've been doing research for a news guy who just got a gig at TGP. I first watched this channel because of the subject of northern Nevada, where I lived for 20 years. It was exciting to see my old haunts and I believe we interacted a bit. I know I earned a few things from you. I have a story for you that will be of interest. My ex had a cassette tape of an interview with his great grandmother who was born and raised in Eastern Nevada near the crossing that Mark Twain used when traveling from Missouri to Virginia City and San Francisco. It's around Ely. We had 5 of Twain's books, autographed by Twain including a letter of thanks on the inside, as a gift to his great grandfather for being such a great host on his rest stops. His great grandmother doesn't talk much, if at all about that subject though. She talks about her family interacting with Native Americans, specifically about helping each other survive the winter. It's the most harsh winter I've ever experienced because there is a hogback type mountain that never let's it heat up until about noon and by then, it's too late because the sun goes down in 5 hours. Bitter, windy cold. Anyway, that audio cassette was donated to the State of Nevada museum. It's in Special Collections if you want to check it out. I live in Stockton and I think it's kind of strange that he would say it is such a dangerous place to live. I live in the magnolia historical district and it is so quiet here. You never see anybody walking around at night or any crime activity in the streets in broad daylight or at night. It was very interesting to learn some of this history. I love this city!
I lived in Eureka, California the first 36 years of my life and am amazed and saddened at how little of California I saw during that time. It’s a beautiful state with such interesting history that you bring to your viewers. Stockton looked clean and nice in this video, not crime-ridden at all, but I believe you that it is! Anyway, thank you for all you do to bring California’s incredible history to us.
That was interesting! I had a to do a report while at Delta College in my Anthropology class about a decade ago. Part of my research was looking at child graves in that cementary. It was sad, but I learned a lot and did well in the class. You visiting the old cementary reminds me of that report and the weekend I spent in the cementary.
The jail was known as Cunningham Castle. The two front heavy wooden doors were preserved and are in the basement of the Haggin museum at victory park in Stockton.

My grandparents lived there and many aunts, uncles and cousins.I have had two cousins murdered there. I remember when Michael Jackson visited a elementary school there. I’ve been to the port and downtown areas many times. Aug 12th is coming up so Happy Early Birthday Jeff!
It is still an amazing thing, even to this day, when traveling through the oldest part of Stockton, there are still fading, painted advertisements for hotel rooms of hotels that no longer exist on building walls. I have seen whole - wall ads for products that have been long forgotten in the fog of time. It can be a melancholy journey to see these old symbols that speak of lives and products that were at one time vital and relevant. It is sobering to understand that one day, we will become those memories and shadows of the past, but ultimately time marches on mercilessly and without relent, rendering our photos faded and our memories distant and foggy as the past itself. Stockton(Aka..FAT CITY) was long ago ...well before WW2. The place many needed to go to pick up supplies for living....the Deep water channel plus Railroad made for Extensive supply delivery.
I lived in Stockton for 12 years and have worked in Stockton for the last 29yrs. 5 of those years i work for AMR Ambulance on a ALS rig. Stockton is worse today than I have ever seen it. You have every right to be nervous. I currently work for the BNSF Railway and our railroad runs right through the worst of Stockton. Great video. I had no idea that jail ever existed. Thank you.
Stockton is just another city ruined by the progressive policies of the New Democratic Communist Party. The same thing has happened in my home state of New York.
@@heathen637 Bit aggressive. For what reason? I've lived in Stockton for quite a while and I can also agree Stockton has gotten far worse. To name a few of the problems: homeless are everywhere, local businesses are constantly being shut down, and the roads aren't being maintained despite the increase of traffic. That isn't to say there hasn't been attempts at bettering the communities, but overall Stockton is a mess.
I have lived here all 41 years of my life and it has gotten worse by the year. My dad retired from BNSF around 2010 as as locomotive engineer after 30+ yrs of work and I can remember being a kid going with my dad to Mormon yard and wondering why is it located here. But Stockton can be a beautiful city to be in depending on what area and activities you get into.

I didn't mean to offend. We are from Modesto and we are disparaged all the time for the crap that goes on here. I know what it means to have pride in your city and property and grieved by the worst parts of society that drag the community down. Having said that, a lot of outsiders (like me) are downright scared by a drive off of the crosstown freeway towards UOP. Other towns have the same negative connotation but a lot of Valley cities are becoming ghetto. You would not believe how UGLY the entrance to Modesto is if coming up Hwy. 99 from the south. It looks horrible with graffiti, wrecking yards, homeless camps and trashy trailer parks.Unfortunately the whole town is judged on that first impression. I am sick of the direction of California. Anyway, my last comment was sort of tongue and cheek. I did add that I knew I would get out alive. Don't give up on us. It's just that as a lifelong Californian, I am appalled at our state rating the highest in poverty. Our leaders are mostly to blame.

Any City has bad areas. Stockton has so much History, at its port and fruit ranches, fancy packing for world distribution. It all started in Stockton. I see no reason to run down any struggling area. SCARY!
I worked in Stockton, and lived nearby, from 1986 to 1997. It is like many large cities that have civic leadership problems, run down areas, and people with criminal intent. One had to learn the areas to avoid. Other parts of Stockton has beautiful residential and business areas but the negative aspects overshadow them with the bad statistics and reputation.
100% It's really sad seeing people read off some statistics and paint an entire 300,000 person city as evil and criminal. Stockton has some beautiful parts and great people
Do you recall on "The Big Valley", they would talk about going into Stockton on business or for shopping. What a shame that Stockton and so much of California has declined. I grew up in Los Angeles, moved back out there, but got out quickly.
Yes I used to watch the TV show back in the 1970s and we always thought it was interesting how Stockton was a western frontier town that didn’t resemble anything that we knew.

When I lived in the far East Bay I was called for jury duty in Stockton, What a horrible experience. All the parking lots were full very early and I was forced to park on the street in the midst of all kinds of homeless people. The walk to the courthouse was very uncomfortable and I had no idea what shape my car would be in when I returned to it or if it was still there. Fortunately, I was cut loose after three days. Never again, I promised myself. Now happily retired out of the state.
That was a beautiful jail. Amazing that it had its own natural gas source, the reason it was probably built there. I like the cemetery follow ups. And yes, I wouldn’t go to Stockton if I had too! I cringe when I pass it on HWY’s 4 and 99..
I have so many fond memories of living in Stockton. It’s been 25 years since I’ve moved from there and it’s been sad to see conditions there deteriorate so much. Four of my children were born there and it was a good place to live. There is so much rich history in Stockton and I’m so glad you made this video and that you are safe!
I was born in Stockton at the Oak Park Hospital in 1961. We moved to Linden in 1966. Back then, there was not much money. But people didn’t go hungry because of all the agriculture. The San Joaquin valley peat dirt would grow anything if you had water in the summer. Hardly any rain that time of year. We moved to Phoenix, AZ. in 1971. I missed Stockton/Linden. I moved back to Stockton in 1983 and left in 1989. Stockton was sliding into the liberal abyss in 1989.

I'm in Stockton for the second time. The first time, we had 2 cars and a motorcycle stolen, this time they've tried to steal our car and my motorcycle. Crime was bad enough in the 90s, it's much worse now. We're here because my wife's out of state health care choice was unacceptable. We are in senior/assisted living, which helps a bit. It's a shame, Stockton should be the crown jewel of the San Joaquin valley. Sadly, Stockton isn't the only valley city with rampant crime. As always, love your content.
Sheriff Tom Cunningham was very much into forensics and had a huge collection of evidence and other crime stuff that was all tossed out, I think when that building was torn down probably. Long after Cunnunghams death his old engraved 1866 Winchester was found in an Auburn chicken coop. I think it’s in the possession of the current Stockton police dept.
There’s a couple of things that I need to tell you sir. 1. I’ve been in Stockton for over 22 years and if you are into drugs and gangs, problems will find you. They won’t mess with you at all in this city 2. You have taught me so much every since I started watching History Hunters. I pass that old jail house all the time not knowing it use to be a jail there. 3. On market street by the Bob Hope theater, people J walk like crazy right there. 4. I worked out of Stockton for many years and it does have a few beautiful buildings left. Unfortunately, the city is flooded with crime and homeless folks Other names for Stockton were Tuleburg and Mudville in the early days..

Another awesome video. I'm in and out of Stockton all the time as I live close by in Manteca. I've never had an issue while visiting Stockton. Years ago, I was downtown Metal Detecting the old Hotel lot that was raised and where the new bus terminal was later built. I Found some interesting items. Stockton is definitely a town full of History! Great job, keep up the good work in your story telling, you're one of the best!

Very interesting presentation! Stockton in recent decades has been a Mecca for high crime, but I bet Defunding the Police didn't make the town any safer.

Number 1! Great video Jeff! I am particularly fascinated with the criminal justice mechanisms of the old days. It really is too bad the the relics like the old Stockton jail are rarely preserved.
I enjoy watching your channel every Sunday! Keep them coming! Sad to see California reduced to the kind of State it is today, I spent many months in California back in the 80's and 90's when in the Army, it was a great place to take in the National Parks like Kings Canyon, Yosemite and Sequoia.
When jail was a place you tried to avoid. I worked in Stockton at least once a week in the 80's and 90's, kinda scary and I tried to avoid downtown. I believe that is where the AK47 became demonized and mass shootings were popularized because of Patrick Purdy shooting the school children, at least for me, that was the first school shooting I had heard of. I was working down there the day before just down the street.
That was in 1989. At the time 4 students was the largest amount of student deaths during a school shooting(until Columbine). It’s so sad that the shootings haven’t stopped. That guy shot up the playground. Now it’s students killing other students.

We went to the asparagus festival in Stockton a couple times years ago. Being from Sacramento I knew of Stockton’s rep and was kinda nervous too. Ended up being a cool place and had fun. Most of the problems there are gang related I think.
My house that I lived in at 3755 Myrtle Ave, in Long Beach, CA survived the 1933 earthquake and currently has a state historic plaque on the front of the entrance. Smoking does plaque up the arteries. When you mentioned that that man was having trouble breathing, I immediately recognized as a heart attack in progress. I'm not a doctor and frankly I don't even play a doctor on television, but I have had heart valves replaced and I have quite a bit of knowledge on the heart. Thanks again Jeff for telling this story from Stockton and I appreciate your courage walking around the city. Danger, I remember the news of the woman a few years ago who was kidnapped by bank robbers only to be shot up with many bullets by the Stockton Police department as they cornered the car. Her name was Misty Holt-Singh. Two other women were able to roll out of the moving vehicle before it came to a stop.
I know that's where my dad three older sisters and five brothers were born and raised and he told me don't ever go there he told me all about some place called bum Park haha and I know he said my grandpa was a fireman I don't know nothing about that I'm just that's just what he said I would like to go see it one day I would like to meet I don't even know if they're alive or not but my uncle's and aunt's and cousins all I know is my dad's name was Emmett Kearns my grandfather's name was Emmett Leo Kearns if anyone knows them get in contact with me please
I've lived in Stockton the last 38 years and have seen huge growth and even bigger decay. Sadly as with a lot of cities we have a massive homeless and gang population which adds to the crime rate statistics 😪 Thank you for your video and glad you survived lol.
Such great videos. As a member of the A.I.A. I am always interested in the architecture of a town. The original buildings had so much more character than most post WWII buildings we have seen built (including the Roman Catholic Diocese of Stockton building that today uses that site). Good news about the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake was it hit at almost 6:00pm so even though several schools fell down, it's likely most of them had no students in them.
I pretty much grew up in Stockton and I love the history it has to offer but boy oh boy I try to leave well before it gets dark.. I now live in Galt ca
I've lived in Stockton California since 2003, almost 20 years now. There's so much crime here I call this place Gotham, but there's no Batman to save us from all the corrupt leaders and citizens. One of my neighbors was murdered by a shot to the head about 2 or 3 weeks ago. He was just walking around the neighborhood getting fresh air. And we live in a nicer neighborhood. We have security that drives around to keep us "safe". Our cars have been broken into multiple times, our house has been broken into, we've had holes drilled into the gas tanks of our vehicles to steal our gas, porch pirates everywhere, shopping malls and big chain stores can't stay open as late as other cities locations because of the level of stealing that happens after dark is too much money lost. Geographically, it's one of the nicest areas you could live in Central California. We have the Delta waterways and lakes nearby for boating, It takes only 1.5 hours to drive to the ocean and about 1.5 hours to drive to the mountains. It takes about 10 years of your stuff getting stolen or you being threatened with your life to get acclimated and used to this lifestyle. You just always have to be watching your surroundings. Other cities are starting to drop their homeless off here in Stockton too, so now we have homeless sleeping everywhere where we did not have that 5 years ago. So now we have abandoned shopping carts all over our neighborhood, trash and burnt wood throughout the neighborhood, and the Delta waterways are being flooded with trash, feces, and urine from the homeless. It's not the homeless fault, it's how our government chooses to help them, so I have nothing against our homeless that are just trying to live their lives as well. One pro, is that we have a very diverse culture here, so there is some of the best food you can eat from all different cultures. You don't have to travel anywhere If you want to try different types of foods from other cultures or countries. Stockton has it all when it comes to authentic restaurants. Oh, And I believe Stockton holds the record for the largest city in America to file for bankruptcy.
Stockton can be unsafe in places but where I went seems very sketchy! The whole state is being victimized by failed leadership at the state level. If you let criminals get away with light sentences, they'll take their chances and steal you blind and maybe even shoot you if they have to. There are no serious consequences.
@@michaelhill7500 , I am not exaggerating. And I'm not going to tell you what neighborhood I live in. I'll just say North Stockton which is a nicer area than some other parts of Stockton but it doesn't matter where you live in Stockton unless you live in Brookside. The gated Brookside neighborhood is untouchable because it is protected by gate guards and golf courses. I am a contractor so I travel to a lot of homes and businesses and I've seen some crazy stuff. One job I was at, I had to go in their basement to work. I get down in the basement and there must have been 20 plus humans sleeping on the dirt floor of the basement in the middle of the day. I had to step over their bodies just so I can do my work. I've had pregnant prostitutes high on a drug come up to my work truck while I was getting a tool out asking me if they want to have sex for $40. I can get worse than that but I don't want people throwing up while reading my experiences of living in Stockton.

those buildings were beautiful! Kind of like the old county hospital in French Camp near the new jail, I wonder if they were built at the same time or designed by the same person?

As always a great video, History Hunters. I shared this with a Facebook group named Stockton History. I'm sure other members will enjoy it and comment. I lived in Stockton in the mid-80s when crack cocaine about destroyed the town with all the violence it brought with it. I worked on Rough and Ready Island for a defense contractor and drove there weekdays always a bit scared as to getting hit by a stray bullet or being robbed in broad daylight along the way. The apartment building I lived in in north central Stockton is named Eden Square Apartments. It has a pretty interesting history to it- not enough for an episode of History Hunters unless you included a story about the Boggs family who built/owned it and Boggs Tract history. Thanks again for doing these videos.
As a transplant from the East Coast, I find Stockton's history fascinating. It would be an interesting segment to have him do some of the stories of these families that owned the different tracts. I'm not sure if these date from the Spanish land grants or after. But I am pretty sure that some of these families descendants are around and profiting from their landed families. ✌️😎

Well for me personally I have interest in all your videos!! And like you hate it when I have to go into Stockton and can’t wait till I am on my way out!! As long as I can remember it’s been a violent town. I had a contact in Stockton who has since passed but he bought a house that had to be demolished or moved so the crosstown freeway could be built.. he moved out on Cherokee Lane East of town.. but being a long time resident he had a lot of memorabilia from the area where that freeway was built. He also loaned me a book about the Paddle-wheelers of the delta 1860 it was a very interesting read! And last but not least ... Jeff my Mom was born Aug. 17,1925 in Strawn, Tx. Throughout the years, earlier generations were all about the latest fad...whatever was 'in' replaced what was 'old'. Our current generation venerates what is 'old', making some of us hanker the past.---(The mortuary in my location is Starbuck-Lind, and when our Hospice team was meeting altogether...north county with south county, if our North County team patients chose Starbuck-Lind, we'd simply say "Starbuck's", which shocked the South County staff into wondering what we were running up here!)
We in Lodi are cursed by living near Stockton. Lodi is becoming a shit hole. I call Stockton the Detroit of the Central Valley. Stockton peak was 1920s.
I hate when beautiful buildings are demolished and replaced with ugly buildings. The powers that be need to stop inflicting their ugly “modern” architecture on us and start building beautiful buildings again. Stockton actually looked nice compared to East St. Louis, IL which is the most dangerous and decrepit city that I have ever had the misfortune of visiting. East St. Louis is usually the most dangerous, or one of the most dangerous, cities in America and even the world. It has even more murders per capita than Chicago or St. Louis. East St. Louis is unimaginably decrepit and rundown. It’s a dirty, vandalized, junky ruin of a city.
Jeff and Sarah I don't leave likes and comments to help your statistics I leave it because you are so informative and interesting with your episodes. That said I was familiar with early-mid fifties Stockton as my father on his vacations from LAPD would go each year to Stockton and work as a Railroad Policeman for Santa Fe. Dad was very familiar with Stockton P.D. Officers and Detectives. I remember well the old jail as it was such a beautiful late 1800's building. Stockton had its problems then as all cities do but nothing like today. Seems the trend with the cities today are going that way (L.A. is a n example). Keep Hunting History and thanks.

I enjoyed your video. Having lived her 65 years, I remember the Cunningham Jail. A retired probation officer, I’m aware of crime and safety issues in Stockton, but I think you overemphasized this, particularly in your parting shot-something like, I got out of here alive. Stockton does indeed have its dangers, but that’s become the standard mode in much of the US. I feel unsafe in much of the Bay Area and in many other California cities. There is also a cultural and historical richness in this area.
Moved to Stockton in 1971 Grade school up to College my whole life in Stockton. Lot of Good People here bad rap from a few now and then. Stockton still has a whole lot to offer over all to California. Many of my class mates became Police Officers and Deputy Sheriffs along with a few whom worked in Department of Corrections. I respond to break in 's often in this city with my business going after 51 years here. I think most of the bad issue's come from our own lack of lawless laws. Need to get back to basics and handle situations like we did in the good old day's. Hanging's were justice served right and proper. Do the crime do the time was the Moto back then. Now day's the system is too ready to release and not apprehend. The criminals are more inclined to stay in jail because it is so nice and comfy over anything else out there. We need more back to Bible Basics of Law to be put back into right for place for the greater of all Humanity. Stockton sure is a whole bunch bigger now than way back in 1971 was. Seems it is growing even faster than ever these day's. Lot's of good people here. So much to provide to the whole World comes out of Stockton, CA. U.S.A.

What A Historical Gem you've produced! Not focusing on what Stockton is Currently but in its rich Historical features which still stand firm and its Western Culture of the gold rush Era! they knocked down the jail building back then for the same reason they're knocking them down till this day especially in Stockton California certain buildings have certain meaning it all comes down to United States Heritage and it sad to see buildings go down just because government wants to cover something up you should dig up Pillsbury chip Hodgkins Wells Fargo he'd probably tell you where the deed is or look under the rug into the old Bank of agriculture
At one time the Hotel Stockton was used by the county as a welfare office. It also was used as a courthouse in the 1960's during the transition of tearing down the old court House at 222 E Weber and building a courthouse and county offices. The newest court house sits next to it at 180 E Weber.
I believe most crimes happen at night therefore I would never walk the streets of any town at night, but I get you"re drift, I used to drive the elevated short distance on hwy 4 from the 99 to I-5 and looking down on the city of Stockton did not appeal to me at all and this was back in the 90's. Lol
I grew up in Fresno in the 1960s, and it shares a number of characteristics with Stockton, including architecture, and in recent decades, high crime rate. I did enjoy the city back in the day, though.
...i've heard that stockton was also known as 'fat city' for its association with boxing...btw, early happy b'day (but not to be noted on a tombstone)...
Brick buildings flourished in response to the destruction from all the fires in early California towns, but earthquakes and unreinforced brick were just as a sure recipe for disaster. Things had to change, unfortunately for history.
I liked the soundtrack for this video, Santa Rosa had a courthouse that looked very similar to the Stockton one, it was destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
I am from Modesto and remembered going to work in Stockton in 1984, I was young and did not travel alot so driving through Stockton made me feel like I was in LA...the downtown was full of people walking around and shopping, there was no homeless people that I saw during those times....I remembered eating at an A&W and I never ever tasted burgers like that anymore, I dreamed of those burgers in downtown Stockton. It was a nice looking downtown way back

Jeff there are couple of movies I'm sure you have heard of called escape from LA and escape from New York with Kurt Russell in both of them, I think America is going to look like what is portrayed in those movies in a very short order.

My memory from a Stockton visit in the middle 60s is of being on the Delta. It was so interesting seeing all the WWII ships in mothballs along the Delta. Have you been there? I've been neglecting this channel for months because I've been doing research for a news guy who just got a gig at TGP.
I first watched this channel because of the subject of northern Nevada, where I lived for 20 years. It was exciting to see my old haunts and I believe we interacted a bit. I know I earned a few things from you.
I have a story for you that will be of interest. My ex had a cassette tape of an interview with his great grandmother who was born and raised in Eastern Nevada near the crossing that Mark Twain used when traveling from Missouri to Virginia City and San Francisco. It's around Ely. We had 5 of Twain's books, autographed by Twain including a letter of thanks on the inside, as a gift to his great grandfather for being such a great host on his rest stops.
His great grandmother doesn't talk much, if at all about that subject though.
She talks about her family interacting with Native Americans, specifically about helping each other survive the winter. It's the most harsh winter I've ever experienced because there is a hogback type mountain that never let's it heat up until about noon and by then, it's too late because the sun goes down in 5 hours. Bitter, windy cold.
Anyway, that audio cassette was donated to the State of Nevada museum. It's in Special Collections if you want to check it out. Thanks for making it to the end of my memory voyage.

I live in the magnolia historical district and it is so quiet here. You never see anybody walking around at night or any crime activity in the streets in broad daylight or at night.

I lived in Eureka, California the first 36 years of my life and am amazed and saddened at how little of California I saw during that time. It’s a beautiful state with such interesting history that you bring to your viewers. Stockton looked clean and nice in this video, not crime-ridden at all, but I believe you that it is! Anyway, thank you for all you do to bring California’s incredible history to us.

That was interesting! I had a to do a report while at Delta College in my Anthropology class about a decade ago. Part of my research was looking at child graves in that cementary. It was sad, but I learned a lot and did well in the class. You visiting the old cementary reminds me of that report and the weekend I spent in the cementary.
My father and many friends are buried in the Rural cemetery .
The jail was known as Cunningham Castle. The two front heavy wooden doors were preserved and are in the basement of the Haggin museum at victory park in Stockton.

My grandparents lived there and many aunts, uncles and cousins.I have had two cousins murdered there. I remember when Michael Jackson visited a elementary school there. I’ve been to the port and downtown areas many times. Aug 12th is coming up so Happy Early Birthday Jeff!
It is still an amazing thing, even to this day, when traveling through the oldest part of Stockton, there are still fading, painted advertisements for hotel rooms of hotels that no longer exist on building walls. I have seen whole - wall ads for products that have been long forgotten in the fog of time. It can be a melancholy journey to see these old symbols that speak of lives and products that were at one time vital and relevant. It is sobering to understand that one day, we will become those memories and shadows of the past, but ultimately time marches on mercilessly and without relent, rendering our photos faded and our memories distant and foggy as the past itself. Awesome vid Jeff. Stockton is a city with a colorful past if one only takes the time to learn about it.

I lived in Stockton for 12 years and have worked in Stockton for the last 29yrs. 5 of those years i work for AMR Ambulance on a ALS rig. Stockton is worse today than I have ever seen it. You have every right to be nervous. I currently work for the BNSF Railway and our railroad runs right through the worst of Stockton. Great video. I had no idea that jail ever existed. Thank you.

@@heathen637 Bit aggressive. For what reason? I've lived in Stockton for quite a while and I can also agree Stockton has gotten far worse. To name a few of the problems: homeless are everywhere, local businesses are constantly being shut down, and the roads aren't being maintained despite the increase of traffic. That isn't to say there hasn't been attempts at bettering the communities, but overall Stockton is a mess.
I have lived here all 41 years of my life and it has gotten worse by the year. My dad retired from BNSF around 2010 as as locomotive engineer after 30+ yrs of work and I can remember being a kid going with my dad to Mormon yard and wondering why is it located here. But Stockton can be a beautiful city to be in depending on what area and activities you get into.

I didn't mean to offend. We are from Modesto and we are disparaged all the time for the crap that goes on here. I know what it means to have pride in your city and property and grieved by the worst parts of society that drag the community down. Having said that, a lot of outsiders (like me) are downright scared by a drive off of the crosstown freeway towards UOP. Other towns have the same negative connotation but a lot of Valley cities are becoming ghetto. You would not believe how UGLY the entrance to Modesto is if coming up Hwy. 99 from the south. It looks horrible with graffiti, wrecking yards, homeless camps and trashy trailer parks.Unfortunately the whole town is judged on that first impression. I am sick of the direction of California.
Anyway, my last comment was sort of tongue and cheek. I did add that I knew I would get out alive.
Don't give up on us. It's just that as a lifelong Californian, I am appalled at our state rating the highest in poverty. Our leaders are mostly to blame.

I worked in Stockton, and lived nearby, from 1986 to 1997. It is like many large cities that have civic leadership problems, run down areas, and people with criminal intent. One had to learn the areas to avoid. Other parts of Stockton has beautiful residential and business areas but the negative aspects overshadow them with the bad statistics and
reputation.

Do you recall on "The Big Valley", they would talk about going into Stockton on business or for shopping. What a shame that Stockton and so much of California has declined. I grew up in Los Angeles, moved back out there, but got out quickly.
Yes I used to watch the TV show back in the 1970s and we always thought it was interesting how Stockton was a western frontier town that didn’t resemble anything that we knew.

When I lived in the far East Bay I was called for jury duty in Stockton, What a horrible experience. All the parking lots were full very early and I was forced to park on the street in the midst of all kinds of homeless people. The walk to the courthouse was very uncomfortable and I had no idea what shape my car would be in when I returned to it or if it was still there. Fortunately, I was cut loose after three days. Never again, I promised myself.
Now happily retired out of the state.

That was a beautiful jail. Amazing that it had its own natural gas source, the reason it was probably built there. I like the cemetery follow ups. And yes, I wouldn’t go to Stockton if I had too! I cringe when I pass it on HWY’s 4 and 99..
I have so many fond memories of living in Stockton. It’s been 25 years since I’ve moved from there and it’s been sad to see conditions there deteriorate so much. Four of my children were born there and it was a good place to live. There is so much rich history in Stockton and I’m so glad you made this video and that you are safe!
I was born in Stockton at the Oak Park Hospital in 1961. We moved to Linden in 1966. Back then, there was not much money. But people didn’t go hungry because of all the agriculture. The San Joaquin valley peat dirt would grow anything if you had water in the summer. Hardly any rain that time of year. We moved to Phoenix, AZ. in 1971. I missed Stockton/Linden. I moved back to Stockton in 1983 and left in 1989. Stockton was sliding into the liberal abyss in 1989.
I really miss the food sold at roadside stands. Best ever.

I'm in Stockton for the second time. The first time, we had 2 cars and a motorcycle stolen, this time they've tried to steal our car and my motorcycle. Crime was bad enough in the 90s, it's much worse now.
We're here because my wife's out of state health care choice was unacceptable.
We are in senior/assisted living, which helps a bit.
It's a shame, Stockton should be the crown jewel of the San Joaquin valley.
Sadly, Stockton isn't the only valley city with rampant crime.

Sheriff Tom Cunningham was very much into forensics and had a huge collection of evidence and other crime stuff that was all tossed out, I think when that building was torn down probably. Long after Cunnunghams death his old engraved 1866 Winchester was found in an Auburn chicken coop. I think it’s in the possession of the current Stockton police dept.

1. I’ve been in Stockton for over 22 years and if you are into drugs and gangs, problems will find you. They won’t mess with you at all in this city

I worked out of Stockton for many years and it does have a few beautiful buildings left. Unfortunately, the city is flooded with crime and homeless folks Other names for Stockton were Tuleburg and Mudville in the early days..

Another awesome video. I'm in and out of Stockton all the time as I live close by in Manteca. I've never had an issue while visiting Stockton. Years ago, I was downtown Metal Detecting the old Hotel lot that was raised and where the new bus terminal was later built. I Found some interesting items. When jail was a place you tried to avoid. I worked in Stockton at least once a week in the 80's and 90's, kinda scary and I tried to avoid downtown. I believe that is where the AK47 became demonized and mass shootings were popularized because of Patrick Purdy shooting the school children, at least for me, that was the first school shooting I had heard of. I was working down there the day before just down the street.
That was in 1989. At the time 4 students was the largest amount of student deaths during a school shooting(until Columbine). It’s so sad that the shootings haven’t stopped. That guy shot up the playground. Now it’s students killing other students.
That was one the first ever school/ mass shootings in USA history.

I never have liked that city
I was in Stockton in 1982 for a horse show for my Appaloosa gelding, a yearling at the time.
We went to the asparagus festival in Stockton a couple times years ago. Being from Sacramento I knew of Stockton’s rep and was kinda nervous too. Ended up being a cool place and had fun. Most of the problems there are gang related I think.
Yeah, gangs, drugs and poverty all seem to go hand in hand. It's sad because it takes down good cities filled with good people.
My house that I lived in at 3755 Myrtle Ave, in Long Beach, CA survived the 1933 earthquake and currently has a state historic plaque on the front of the entrance.
Smoking does plaque up the arteries. When you mentioned that that man was having trouble breathing, I immediately recognized as a heart attack in progress.
I'm not a doctor and frankly I don't even play a doctor on television, but I have had heart valves replaced and I have quite a bit of knowledge on the heart. Thanks again Jeff for telling this story from Stockton and I appreciate your courage walking around the city. Danger, I remember the news of the woman a few years ago who was kidnapped by bank robbers only to be shot up with many bullets by the Stockton Police department as they cornered the car. Her name was Misty Holt-Singh. Two other women were able to roll out of the moving vehicle before it came to a stop.

I've lived in Stockton the last 38 years and have seen huge growth and even bigger decay. Sadly as with a lot of cities we have a massive homeless and gang population which adds to the crime rate statistics 😪 Thank you for your video and glad you survived lol.

Such great videos. As a member of the A.I.A. I am always interested in the architecture of a town. The original buildings had so much more character than most post WWII buildings we have seen built (including the Roman Catholic Diocese of Stockton building that today uses that site). Good news about the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake was it hit at almost 6:00pm so even though several schools fell down, it's likely most of them had no students in them.
I pretty much grew up in Stockton and I love the history it has to offer but boy oh boy I try to leave well before it gets dark.. I now live in Galt ca
I've lived in Stockton California since 2003, almost 20 years now. There's so much crime here I call this place Gotham, but there's no Batman to save us from all the corrupt leaders and citizens. One of my neighbors was murdered by a shot to the head about 2 or 3 weeks ago. He was just walking around the neighborhood getting fresh air. And we live in a nicer neighborhood. We have security that drives around to keep us "safe". Our cars have been broken into multiple times, our house has been broken into, we've had holes drilled into the gas tanks of our vehicles to steal our gas, porch pirates everywhere, shopping malls and big chain stores can't stay open as late as other cities locations because of the level of stealing that happens after dark is too much money lost. Geographically, it's one of the nicest areas you could live in Central California. We have the Delta waterways and lakes nearby for boating, It takes only 1.5 hours to drive to the ocean and about 1.5 hours to drive to the mountains. It takes about 10 years of your stuff getting stolen or you being threatened with your life to get acclimated and used to this lifestyle. You just always have to be watching your surroundings. Other cities are starting to drop their homeless off here in Stockton too, so now we have homeless sleeping everywhere where we did not have that 5 years ago. So now we have abandoned shopping carts all over our neighborhood, trash and burnt wood throughout the neighborhood, and the Delta waterways are being flooded with trash, feces, and urine from the homeless. It's not the homeless fault, it's how our government chooses to help them, so I have nothing against our homeless that are just trying to live their lives as well. One pro, is that we have a very diverse culture here, so there is some of the best food you can eat from all different cultures. You don't have to travel anywhere If you want to try different types of foods from other cultures or countries. Stockton has it all when it comes to authentic restaurants. Oh, And I believe Stockton holds the record for the largest city in America to file for bankruptcy.
Stockton can be unsafe in places but where I went seems very sketchy! The whole state is being victimized by failed leadership at the state level. If you let criminals get away with light sentences, they'll take their chances and steal you blind and maybe even shoot you if they have to. There are no serious consequences.

I'll just say North Stockton which is a nicer area than some other parts of Stockton but it doesn't matter where you live in Stockton unless you live in Brookside. The gated Brookside neighborhood is untouchable because it is protected by gate guards and golf courses. I am a contractor so I travel to a lot of homes and businesses and I've seen some crazy stuff. One job I was at, I had to go in their basement to work. I get down in the basement and there must have been 20 plus humans sleeping on the dirt floor of the basement in the middle of the day. I had to step over their bodies just so I can do my work. I've had pregnant prostitutes high on a drug come up to my work truck while I was getting a tool out asking me if they want to have sex for $40. I can get worse than that but I don't want people throwing up while reading my experiences of living in Stockton.

As always a great video, History Hunters. I shared this with a Facebook group named Stockton History. I'm sure other members will enjoy it and comment. I lived in Stockton in the mid-80s when crack cocaine about destroyed the town with all the violence it brought with it. I worked on Rough and Ready Island for a defense contractor and drove there weekdays always a bit scared as to getting hit by a stray bullet or being robbed in broad daylight along the way. The apartment building I lived in in north central Stockton is named Eden Square Apartments. It has a pretty interesting history to it- not enough for an episode of History Hunters unless you included a story about the Boggs family who built/owned it and Boggs Tract history. Thanks again for doing these videos.
As a transplant from the East Coast, I find Stockton's history fascinating. It would be an interesting segment to have him do some of the stories of these families that owned the different tracts. I'm not sure if these date from the Spanish land grants or after. But I am pretty sure that some of these families descendants are around and profiting from their landed families. ✌️😎

That old jail house was a magnificent building. Poor Stockton it's so misunderstood, I've worked in that town years ago and always kept protection close by, you just never know. Enjoy your videos!

It's sad to see so many beautiful old buildings torn down. I'm glad people are more aware of the historical significance of these grand old buildings (although they still might not always be saved). think about Old Sacramento and how close it came to being just a memory. Safe travels, Jeff!
Well for me personally I have interest in all your videos!! And like you hate it when I have to go into Stockton and can’t wait till I am on my way out!! As long as I can remember it’s been a violent town. I had a contact in Stockton who has since passed but he bought a house that had to be demolished or moved so the crosstown freeway could be built.. he moved out on Cherokee Lane East of town.. but being a long time resident he had a lot of memorabilia from the area where that freeway was built. He also loaned me a book about the Paddle-wheelers of the delta 1860 it was a very interesting read! And last but not least ... Jeff my Mom was born Aug. 17,1925 in Strawn, Tx. Throughout the years, earlier generations were all about the latest fad...whatever was 'in' replaced what was 'old'. Our current generation venerates what is 'old', making some of us hanker the past.---(The mortuary in my location is Starbuck-Lind, and when our Hospice team was meeting altogether...north county with south county, if our North County team patients chose Starbuck-Lind, we'd simply say "Starbuck's", which shocked the South County staff into wondering what we were running up here!)
We in Lodi are cursed by living near Stockton. Lodi is becoming a shit hole. I call Stockton the Detroit of the Central Valley. Stockton peak was 1920s.
I hate when beautiful buildings are demolished and replaced with ugly buildings.
The powers that be need to stop inflicting their ugly “modern” architecture on us and start building beautiful buildings again.
Stockton actually looked nice compared to East St. Louis, IL which is the most dangerous and decrepit city that I have ever had the misfortune of visiting.
East St. Louis is usually the most dangerous, or one of the most dangerous, cities in America and even the world. It has even more murders per capita than Chicago or St. Louis.
East St. Louis is unimaginably decrepit and rundown. It’s a dirty, vandalized, junky ruin of a city.
Jeff and Sarah I don't leave likes and comments to help your statistics I leave it because you are so informative and interesting with your episodes. That said I was familiar with early-mid fifties Stockton as my father on his vacations from LAPD would go each year to Stockton and work as a Railroad Policeman for Santa Fe. Dad was very familiar with Stockton P.D. Officers and Detectives. I remember well the old jail as it was such a beautiful late 1800's building. Stockton had its problems then as all cities do but nothing like today. Seems the trend with the cities today are going that way (L.A. is a n example). Keep Hunting History and thanks.

I enjoyed your video. Having lived her 65 years, I remember the Cunningham Jail. A retired probation officer, I’m aware of crime and safety issues in Stockton, but I think you overemphasized this, particularly in your parting shot-something like, I got out of here alive. Stockton does indeed have its dangers, but that’s become the standard mode in much of the US. I feel unsafe in much of the Bay Area and in many other California cities. There is also a cultural and historical richness in this area.
Moved to Stockton in 1971 Grade school up to College my whole life in Stockton. Lot of Good People here bad rap from a few now and then. Stockton still has a whole lot to offer over all to California. Many of my class mates became Police Officers and Deputy Sheriffs along with a few whom worked in Department of Corrections. I respond to break in 's often in this city with my business going after 51 years here. I think most of the bad issue's come from our own lack of lawless laws. Need to get back to basics and handle situations like we did in the good old day's. Hanging's were justice served right and proper. Do the crime do the time was the Moto back then. Now day's the system is too ready to release and not apprehend. The criminals are more inclined to stay in jail because it is so nice and comfy over anything else out there. We need more back to Bible Basics of Law to be put back into right for place for the greater of all Humanity. Stockton sure is a whole bunch bigger now than way back in 1971 was. Seems it is growing even faster than ever these day's. Lot's of good people here. So much to provide to the whole World comes out of Stockton, CA. U.S.A.

What A Historical Gem you've produced! Not focusing on what Stockton is Currently but in its rich Historical features which still stand firm and its Western Culture of the gold rush Era! Besides Stocktons Currently ongoing problems I feel you gave a Historical perspective on just how valuable this Miner town is and was again great work👍
they knocked down the jail building back then for the same reason they're knocking them down till this day especially in Stockton California certain buildings have certain meaning it all comes down to United States Heritage and it sad to see buildings go down just because government wants to cover something up you should dig up Pillsbury chip Hodgkins Wells Fargo he'd probably tell you where the deed is or look under the rug into the old Bank of agriculture
At one time the Hotel Stockton was used by the county as a welfare office. It also was used as a courthouse in the 1960's during the transition of tearing down the old court House at 222 E Weber and building a courthouse and county offices. The newest court house sits next to it at 180 E Weber.
I believe most crimes happen at night therefore I would never walk the streets of any town at night, but I get you"re drift, I used to drive the elevated short distance on hwy 4 from the 99 to I-5 and looking down on the city of Stockton did not appeal to me at all and this was back in the 90's. Lol
I grew up in Fresno in the 1960s, and it shares a number of characteristics with Stockton, including architecture, and in recent decades, high crime rate. I did enjoy the city back in the day, though.
...i've heard that stockton was also known as 'fat city' for its association with boxing...btw, early happy b'day (but not to be noted on a tombstone)...
Brick buildings flourished in response to the destruction from all the fires in early California towns, but earthquakes and unreinforced brick were just as a sure recipe for disaster. Things had to change, unfortunately for history.
I liked the soundtrack for this video, Santa Rosa had a courthouse that looked very similar to the Stockton one, it was destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
